Great little shop !• espresso : bright and tangy tangerine flavor with a hint of delicate hibiscus• built in counter espresso machine• interior : beautiful space with an emphasis on jungle plants and earth tones. The number of coffee shops in the state of Michigan with the quality and consistency of Anthology can be counted on one hand. I have never had a bad shot here - they are always dialed in to get the sweetness and characteristic flavors from the bean. Milk drinks are just right, the right ratio, right texture. It takes training, experience, and attention to detail to pull this off.The whole-bean single-origin stuff is among the best you will find in the area as well; great selections, great roasts. Order online and you will likely get your beans the day after they are roasted.

One if the nation’s best roasters & best coffeehouses, without question.I notice a few reviews complaining about the “high prices” here. Look, people: It costs money to source the best coffee and pay the people who produce that coffee. It also costs money to pay people at the coffeehouse a worthwhile income for the special service that they provide. If your goal is to pay low prices for a cup of coffee, and you pay no mind to the income of the humans who produce the beans and the cups, then you are better off at an international chain that sells artificially flavored, commodity sugar-drenched milkshakes disguised as coffee.Would sure be nice if their phone had an after-hours recording, and one that declared the current Covid situation, such as if they have started letting people sit inside.

Amazing service here. Talked with a fantastic barista named Sam who recommended some amazing coffee, talked us through a pour-over set, and was willing to give us honest advice about investing in a top quality grinder rather than buy a cheaper one. Amazing coffee, passionate people who understands the chemistry of coffee. They offer 4 different flavors of coffee (drip style) made to order with a special technic and chemicals balanced water. Takes about 3 minutes. If you are looking for quick prebrewed coffee. This is not your place. :)I have had1. Nyangwe/ Bourborn which has a sharp taste with lighter body - the best2. Rodomunh/ red catua- their darkest and slightly bitter. They also have some cappuccino and pastries of the day, unique each day.The place is hard to find. No sign outside. It looks like a rundown building. With amazing graphiti art.Other major factor I reduced a star is due to, when u get in there its hard to say what do they do. No menu, no signs, nothing.Note: Each coffee is different price.

This review is more about the terrible customer service I received than about the coffee. I ordered two bags of coffee for delivery and only one bag arrived. I promptly let them know. No apology for the error but instead they blamed the process. I was told a second bag would be sent. I was given no expected delivery date. So I reached back out a few days later to ask when I should expect to receive it and was told it was the fault of the the USPS they already shipped it the day before. Not sure why someone didn’t email me to let me know but I cut some slack since it is a local business and supporting local is important. Again, no apology for the inconvenience at the very least. After still not receiving it almost a week later (mind your this place is less than 2 miles from my house), I politely let them know I still hadn’t received it and asked when I should expect it. Again, no apology and again they blamed the USPS. After a few days, I still had not received it and asked for a refund. If the coffee ever arrived, I would have just dropped it back off (again, this place is less than 2 miles from my house). At that point, I was told mistakes were made by their team and if I felt I was “entitled” to a free product, they were happy to provide it. Again, no apology for their initial screw up and now an accusation that I want something for free. Anyone who cares enough about coffee to pay $20 per bag is not looking for free, they are looking for professional quality service. I let them know I only wanted what I paid for and honestly, dropping the bag off at my house would have gone much further in acquiring me as a loyal customer than implying I felt entitled to something for free. After more blame on everything and everyone else, they FINALLY apologized and ended up just refunding me for both bags and said I didn’t need to return anything. Acceptable but this was not my not goal at all. I just wanted what I paid for and to be recognized as a person worthy of an apology. Instead, they let ego get in the way. The coffee? It’s great but every time I take a sip, it’s bittersweet because of this whole ordeal and I’ll definitely never buy anything from them again.

This is absolutely one of my favorite coffee shops in Detroit and a delight to visit every time. Sam, the barista, was professional and extremely kind to walk me through the process for their very unique filter espresso - a must try! I encourage all to visit this shop when in Eastern Market, or even go out of your way to try their coffee! Also, they roast their own coffee so taking home a bag of their beans is not a bad idea either. Love Anthology!

A must-visit coffee shop in an off-the-beaten-path location. I was touring around looking at some of the recently purchased, large industrial buildings and I stumbled upon Anthology. When I walked in I was instantly impressed by the decor. I loved the plants on the walls, the wooden accents and the hand painted murals. It had the feeling of a hand-made coffee shop. The coffee was superb. The owner was very kind and even showed us how to great photos of Detroit!

Quite possibly the best espresso I’ve ever had. I usually lean toward a filter coffee or pour over and tend to not drink much espresso; however, the combination of a super tasty Ethiopian Wush Wush and Anthology’s extraction method led to a super clean, delicate body, and balanced coffee. Size was just right for early afternoon also. Aside from the amazing coffee, the staff is super knowledgeable and the cafe is out of an issue of arch digest!

This place is off the beaten path and well worth the couple extra turns. The coffee is strong. Nothing fancy as far as flavor syrups to dilute the taste. The staff are welcoming and helpful. Highly recommend paying a visit and sharing the secret.

Now THIS is an experience for a true coffee lover. I had the privilege of stopping by Anthology when they had the Esmerelda Estates Geisha from Panama. The fact that I was able to choose which brew-method I wanted (Pour Over, Espresso) was a nice touch. While the aesthetics of the place might be too hipster for some, many a coffee geek will find Anthology to be a highlight of the Detroit coffee scene.

I searched up amazing coffee shops to visit with family in detroit & came across anthology & was excited to try it. the interior look of the shop is 5 stars, but i can’t quite rate my experience that way. the guy that took our order didn’t seem very welcoming. after drinking my coffee, later in the day i felt super nauseous, weak, faint & shaking. i had eaten that morning so i wasn’t drinking a cappuccino on an empty stomach or something, i was hydrated, energetic. my mom was with me & she was feeling the same symptoms that i felt afterwards. i was feeling just fine until after i visited this place. not sure if there was something in that coffee of ours :/ the shop is beautiful, but my experience scares me to go again.

I am very disappointed with my interaction here today... I came here because I know that Anthology’s coffee is very high quality, but the customer service is seriously lacking. After ordering a capp, the barista made me a latte. When I pointed out that I had actually ordered a capp, he didn’t apologize but instead made a comment about how he just made a 10oz drink instead of a 8oz one. First off... cappuccinos are 6oz, not 8oz. Secondly, as soon as he realized he made me something I hadn’t ordered, he should have immediately remade it. He reluctantly offered to remake it after I made a few more comments regarding this not being what I had wanted, but it was clear that he did not want to do so. After this interaction it’s unlikely that I will be returning here for coffee.
