Good coffee, good people, small business/family owned, on a busy street so limited street parking. Community centric so it’s very power to the people type of vibe with nice locally drawn murals on the walls, shirts for sale and a powerful collection of books in their library. They have limited business hours so you might go when they’re closed for the week. Before the pandemic, there was a space for children to quietly play with toys and read books while others can study and do their work

Everytime this place gets low ratings more people show up... Its soooo packed here and people share seats and tables like family you never had. This place will end up expanding because people will congregate in places they feel safe at. Standing room is more like social room. The most communal coffee shop Ive been too. Coffee is good, environment feels so good. Love the homegirl spinning 70 mexican music. The art is amazing.

This is a quaint, intimate spot for coffee and snacks! I went here for breakfast a few times and I was not disappointed. I love that it supports its community. One of my favorite cafes in the bay. Its super clean, great lighting, every one who works there has been so nice and the coffee is from a great local roaster. Its a great place to read, get work done, or just hang out with friends. I feel like most of the people giving negative reviews didnt actually go to the cafe, theyre just angry about what theyve heard on the news.

I love this place. Community-minded coffee shop that doesn’t cater to the gentry, and tries to maintain a space for folks who have lived in the neighborhood. It is NOT anti-white. It is anti-white supremacy. Notice that all the one-star reviews are white folks who are feeling butt-hurt because this place acknowledges their privilege. This white dude appreciates that. And the coffee, people, empanadas, and bookstore are fantastic.

A locally-owned favorite, serving up standard coffee and tea drinks, as well as a few unique and tasty treats. Their empanadas are legit, and the vegan donuts are FANTASTIC. Inside is hung with a rotation of funky indie artwork, and you can buy stickers, art, and swag from local artists. Not sure why theyre rated as pricey - coffees are cheaper than the local Peets, and you can get a tasty snack for under $5, which is pretty reasonable considering its all homemade and frickin delicious. Normally a great neighborhood spot to chill for a bit, or meet up with friends - but their hours are limited atm, due to COVID-19.

Each time I come in to this place Im immediately impressed with the warmth of the folks working behind the counter. They want to help you, but theyre not pushy. They want to recommend things for you and they want to be as helpful as possible and yet they also know when you just wanna get a coffee and read a book. I also love their coffee. And their snacks. You may notice that one star reviews are predominantly placed by out-of-towners. You can tell in their review history. These are people with a Fox News style anti-leftist ideology who are upset about Hasta Muerte choosing to not welcome officers in uniform at their shop. Theyve never even set foot in the place.Five star reviews are most often left by locals. This is because the place is unpretentious, friendly, hosts community events, sells fair trade coffee, and has great coffee and empanadas. Family friendly, has a kids play area. Worker owned, so workers earn fair pay. We value all these things in Oakland, so we value Hasta Muerte. No one should be deterred and everyone is welcome. Blue uniforms can make a lot of people uncomfortable these days... its fairly common for people to feel less safe around police officers, so Hasta Muerte is responding to that.

I took my mom to this coffee shop and we loved it. She said it was the best latte she’s had in a very long time, and my americano was excellent! We couldn’t resist their pastries either so we wound up sharing a giant cookie. The employees were very helpful and were happy to answer my annoying questions. This place feels very comfortable, not pretentious, and offers high quality goods. A rare find for sure. They have tons of great literature, artwork, and stickers as well. I got a Vine Deloria book, couple stickers, two espresso drinks, a cookie, and a pound of coffee for such a reasonable price I asked if they had made a mistake ringing me up. Overall, I would highly recommended this coffee shop: A+.

Negative reviews are based on political differences. Just in case youre wondering why its got such a low score. Honestly, Id probably give it 4 stars but want to balance out the negative reviews a bit.I wont get into the political debate. But it was a nice local spot. It didnt feel expensive or exclusive, which I think it is the whole point. Simple, accessible, with plenty of space and great light. They have tables for laptops and tables for conversation. I appreciate that. I parked on the street, dont think there was a lot. Had no trouble finding parking.Coffee was very solid. I got an iced decaf latte. Probably not the ideal drink for judging coffee quality, but I it was definitely at or above average compared to Starbucks, etc. Sadly, forgot to take any pictures, but I hope to be back.I highly recommend stopping in and checking it out. First time ever going to Oakland. I heard great reviews on this coffee shop. I decided to go there and get some “delicious” coffee. But in reality it was horrible nasty coffee, it was burnt and the milk probably was expired. Plus they try to brain wash you by saying police brutality exist. They got angry when I asked for proof, because I’ve done research on this topic and I found out that police brutality does not exist at all. Anyways a coffee shop should just be selling coffee, and not push an agenda on people.

In answer to other reviewers, this place is not anti-white. I went here to do some Spanish homework with my girlfriend (also white) and we were treated to good coffee and exceptional service. Instead of complaining, why don’t you try and understand WHY this cafe has the mission that it does and applaud it?We can use all the safe spaces we can get these days. If you don’t know what it’s like to live in fear of law enforcement every day of your life, there’s zero room for you to criticize. You don’t like it? There are a million Starbucks that are willing to call the cops on people of color, for just sitting there, so you’ll feel more comfortable.
