Stopped by the new location in the RAD and found it underwhelming. The space feels dark and impersonal and lacks the warm feeling of the old store. There are fewer secondhand items for sale now and way more brand new, full-priced items. I miss the old Second Gear that was primarily oriented toward consigning and buying secondhand.

Good prices on new and used gear. The staff is friendly and very helpful. If you were a fan of the old frugal backpacker store, before they dropped most of the gear, this is the store for you.

I went to Second Gear to begin my search for hiking equipment. I had no intention of buying anything today, I just wanted to look around. Because of the knowledge and great customer service from Jack, I now have almost everything I need to spend a week on the AT. He answered all my questions and gave me some great advice based off of his camping experience. I spent a lot of time hiking with a pack during my 22 years in the Marine Corps, but it was really nice to get some solid recommendations from Jack today. Thanks!!!

I’ve had some outstanding help from staff members here. They are happy to help you and if something isn’t working, they will replace it. I had some hiking poles that stopped adjusting properly and a staff member replaced them for me. Glad this shop exists in Asheville! Also, great outdoor used shoe selection.

A great local spot to upcycle gear or grab a few necessities for backpacking, cycling, or paddling. Sometimes it may be hit or miss if you are looking for something very specific. However, there is usually something extraordinary to take home. They also have an excellent selection of local stickers. Definitely worth stopping by.

Calling this a consignment shop/used gear store is a HUGE stretch... I get that in this economy its hard to own a store that sells things for cheap, but selling generic camping stuff you can get at walmart for 3x-4x the price is INSANE, idk how this store is even still open... maybe cus one sale is enough to pay their rent for the month idk😅

My family loves Second Gear. We visit every single time we got to Asheville or the surrounding area, which is quite a lot! They have an wide selection of products, both new and used, all affordably priced. They are dog friendly and carry many different types of dog products as well. You can also consign gear there, which is a good way to give a new life to your old outdoor supplies.

I love the concept of this store, but they don’t really pull it off. I purchased a sleeping bag liner and used water 1 liter water bladder from second gear last week and they are both faulty. The sleeping bag liner had a broken zipper, and the bladder a leak. Sure, they’re used, but I’d hope that a consignment store would check for defects before selling. And sure; I could have checked more thoroughly, but sometimes it’s hard to find defects until you put them to use (such as the leak in the bladder lining!) After returning home, I looked these products up online and realized I could purchase them new, full price, for cheaper than I paid at second gear. Whaaat? Wish I’d had my phone to look up the equipment and compare prices! Really disappointing to see the price gouging, as I’d hope for better deals as a second hand shop. Might just be a slip that I got two faulty pieces of equipment, but I think the prices aren’t truly a discount like you might expect from a second hand store. ReGear (in Boone) has much better prices with the same concept, though a drive for many in Asheville. Regardless, I won’t be returning: I’ll look online for used pieces.

There seems to be a trend over the past 12 months that your prices continue to get higher and higher and also the refusing of gear and clothing. Clothing I can understand, but you recently refused a Thule rooftop basket extension and I listed it on eBay and sold in one week for $75. I would have been happy with $20 which is what I figured I would have got from you. You may want to re-look at your pricing structure and review your business plan. Are you wanting to be a full price retail store or sell good condition outdoor gear at incredible prices.

Second Gear is owned by a great group of guys. The store has a wide range of gear that will generally suit everyone’s budget and needs. The best part about it is you never know what you’ll find when you walk in. The consignment inventory changes daily. They always have the basics in stock (camp fuel, head lamps, ponchos, tent stakes, etc.) at retail prices that are competitive with other large retailers. There is a large parking lot around back that usually has a few empty spots. There are many restaurants nearby. I often see people stop by while they wait on a table. Second Gear hires intelligent folks that are good with customer service and knowledgeable about the outdoors. I highly recommend checking them first for all your needs. Buying used gear is a great way to cut down on consumer waste. You’re helping a local business, you’re helping the consignor selling the item, you’re helping a local charity that is chosen monthly, and you’re saving money. As a pro tip, that to many folks don’t know about, if you go to their website they have a real-time list of the consigned items that are currently for sale.If you’d rather make money you can bring in your used gear for consignment. They will take half of whatever the item sells for if you decide to receive cash. They only take 40% if you choose to get your cut in store credit. In my experience if you have decent stuff it sells pretty fast, espically during tourism season.

Im sorry but I have to give one star because the prices are sky high as if the backpacks and the rest of the gear are brand new, not too much cheaper than the Frugal which sells new gear, and likewise compared with other outdoors supply stores in the area as well. I must also mention when we walked in, the staff seemingly didnt even notice us, no greeting or offer of assistance to find anything, as they where too busy chatting with other customers from out of state. Not only is it on the other side of town but needless to say we wont be returning, not impressed.

Ive always enjoyed supporting this business, its like a thrift store for backpacking and related gear. They will help you to sell any relevant gear that you no longer need (I have done it many times) and Ive also found great items here like pants, shoes, packs, water bottles and pretty much anything you could need related to camping or backpacking. They also carry a decent amount of new items but are mostly a used-goods store. I only have good experiences here!Edit: I just returned to the store after deciding I wanted to buy a pack they had the other week. Initially I was sad when I realized that someone else had bought it, but I ended up finding an even better one at a lower price! I had a nice talk with the fellow, yet another cool experience :D

I love the idea of this place, reusing gear is wonderful! However I give it a low review because I called and asked them to hold something for me that I had just seen in there. They said sure! She knew who I was because we had a long conversation. When I came back to get it, the same salesperson who said she would hold it told me it was put back. An apology seemed quite insincere. Very very frustrating! I never leave bad reviews but this really got to me.

Weve only had good experiences at Second Gear. The staff have been cheerful and helpful. They dont always have certain items, but weve bought new and used things, and the gear was reasonably priced for the quality and apparent wear. I just bought two pairs of consigned pants and a jacket for my son. Theyre all in fantastic shape - they look like theyve never been worn. I looked up the brands online, I discovered I had paid a third the cost of those pants new and half the cost of the jacket new. VERY happy with the pricing. Since the remodel, the store is also easier to navigate.

Good place to stop for good name brand gear in a pinch, but do yourself a favor and check prices online literally ANYWHERE else before buying. If you don’t need the gear immediately, get to the nearest spot where you have cellular data (store is a dead zone) and make sure you’re not paying too much for something you could wait just a few days for brand new or slightly used from Amazon or eBay, respectively.Places to shop for gear in order of most to least sensible:1. Steep & Cheap2. eBay3. Amazon4. REI (their dividends program and garage sales make most gear, especially their own, very reasonable)5. Craigslist6. Stranger offering you candy in a dark alleyway7. Ive consigned with Second Gear for a couple of months now and have sold them both shoes and apparel. I love and want to continue support small local businesses because I work at one in the area. I was disappointed this afternoon when I walked in to see if they would accept a couple pairs of Altras and a some Oiselle shorts because theyve consigned them from me before. The woman behind the counter seemed new and didnt really have a clue what she was doing. First, she said that she had never heard of the brand and that they wouldnt take my shorts, even though theyve taken Oiselle before. Then she changed her statement and said that they werent accepting ANY apparel when it clearly states on the site that they are accepting spring and summer outdoor apparel. Its fine, just a pair of shorts, I can deal with it. Then she moves on to the shoes and says she cant accept them because shes never heard of the brand Altra and because theyre not trail shoes. Ive sold both trail AND road shoes with Second Gear. Anything from Solomon, Brooks, Topo, Mizuno, etc. I wish she had just said that they were full at the moment and to try back later, but instead she left me feeling frustrated. Running is also an outdoor sport.

Many of the new items instock are weird faux brands that arent necessarily well priced. Quality name brand items are usually overpriced. Theres an extra amount that Im willing to pay to support a local business but this exceeds it.Every once in a while a good used piece of clothing comes around as with most used gear shops. Ive rarely found good deals on hardgoods unless they are mispriced such as easton ultralight stakes priced the same as the solid aluminum hook ones (crazy). When I took a lot of my used items in, I was doing it as an alternative to the goodwill so wasnt too perturbed by not seeing much return. However its pretty crazy to see a mystery fill-power down jacket from the 90s priced at 60 bucks and when all was said and done, I only saw 20 dollars for the Arcteryx Jacket I left there.Couldve definitely made more money on craigslist or ebay if I had the time.
