After coming here and getting their green tea ice cream I realize I do not like real green tea. I like flavors of green tea but not real green tea. What do I mean? I got the green tea puffle. The green tea ice cream was a very dark green… it literally tasted like they picked the green tea leaves, smashed it and made ice cream, no sugar no cream. Good right? Not really because it tasted too tannic and bitter. It wasn’t even like sweet or satisfying for like a summer treat on a hot day. Literally like eating green tea leaves and the branches. Sort of a tobacco flavor. It was pretty gross, not sure if it’s supposed to be that bitter. I guess I’m used to the fake stuff like green tea ice cream at somi somi or sushi places or mochi green tea from the supermarket. Flavored. Not that real. So if you really love real green tea come here and get their ice cream.

Would it be enough to say Im planning on trying everything on the menu? Im not a coffee person, but matcha is my go to for an afternoon pick me up, so I was excited to try this place, and it exceeded expectation!Got the matcha tea float with matcha ice cream, and the soft serve was as great as others have reviewed. Quaint little space with a few outdoor seats. Prices were about 5-7$ for most things on the menu, which is high but in range of other drink/dessert shops on Convoy.

We ordered a couple soft ice cream with mixed vanilla and matcha. They were both really good. Creamy and great flavors! The homemade waffle cone was an extra treat. Super fresh and crispy. Also got a green milk tea with cheese foam and it was delicious. The staff were super friendly and helpful on choosing what we should order. We got our order quickly too. Will definitely be coming back.

MATCHA ME CRAZYFor all you soft serve matcha lovers, this place just might be your euphoria.MAIKO SPECIAL - soft serve with mochi balls, chestnut, matcha cake, adzuki beans, corn flakes, agar jelly, and kuromitsu. You get to pick your soft serve flavor (vanilla, green matcha, strawberry, or a swirl of vanilla+green matcha, or swirl of vanilla+strawberry. Since the dessert itself had other layers of matcha I went for a swirl of the vanilla-strawberry to balance the matcha load and not overkill it. My thoughts.. it was like a halohalo, bobochacha/buburchacha, bilobilo, che ba mau, Chinese mooncake/teacake... party in the mouth. All kinds of Asian dessert mix in a cup and digging down on through each layer of flavor trying to scoop it all at once with a spoon left no wasted spoon space. Most of my matcha flavor was toward the bottom half... there was a matcha square cake pieces and a little bit of matcha soft serve. Overall, I really enjoyed this cold treat especially during hot summer days.Ill be honest, I came here unexpectedly searching for the Kokonut Dessert Bar only to be lead to matcha cafe maiko. Walked in, saw the menu, and said screw the coconut stuff Im going to try something off the Maiko menu and sold from this point on.Until the next spoonful...

This is our first time there since the new ownership. Its obvious to us that the new owners are taking active steps to make it even better with improvements and COVID-19 compliance. I like the Maiko Special as its so refreshing and different from the usual traditional dessert. We will certainly come back with more friends to try more. Check it out!

Interesting business, to say the least, it has a selection of drinks and desserts. I had a matcha latte along with a cheesecake dessert. The cheesecake was probably sitting for a long time because it tasted dull and the drink was actually light and acceptable. The cashier lacks mathematical skills. I provided her with a bill of $20.00. She placed my change on the counter which was about 14 dollars with a mixture of dimes, nickels, quarters, and pennies. Then at the last minute, I decided to try out a cheesecake. So she brought me up again a second time and the cashier said oh its $3.23 cents so she gets the money from the counter and I see shes struggling with the math, the cashier grabs three dollars and 15 cents and says no thats not right she couldve just grabbed the 25 cents leaving the remainder of 2 cents as change, or get 20 cents and 3 pennies for a perfect hand count. But instead the cashier said Ill just get the $5 lol.The business owner should know about this issue because it can financially impact the business, can you imagine if she is giving out excessive change or short changing customers it affects vice versa. I did have the decency to leave a tip because I felt bad their tip jar was pretty much empty. In the end, you never know this cashier couldve had some sort of disability, mental health issue, thats the only reason I didnt want to stress the situation.Sometimes correcting a mistake can cause sadness and discouragement. The cashier looked to be young, perhaps her first job-so yeah anyways if you are into the hipster theme this may work out for you!

This place is really good. Its mid-level on the prices and you definitely get good quality stuff here that you cant find elsewhere. Hojicha ice cream? That was really great. I ordered a green milk tea (thinking it was matcha green tea) with cheese foam and even though it wasnt what I intended to order it was still really good. I went back and got a second drink (hojicha latte) which was also great. Its on my list of favorites.

This place was very high on my list of places to try on vacation so I was very excited to drive far out of the way to make sure it was finished.Upon entering, I was not greeted due to the girl being glued to her phone, and it took a minute or two for her to realize ( or care ) that I was even there.I looked at the menu and decided on an item that was not yet available, so I decided on the next best thing. It was also not available, so she told me to look at the TV menu with what’s actually available since it was a soft opening. It was very disappointing that they did not have half the things they even displayed.I asked for an item to be added to my soft serve, and she told me they didn’t have it- and I let her know the tv menu did.. she apologized and told me they didn’t actually have that item either. While making my food, someone else came in and asked about an item to which the guy working replied “I don’t know what that is” and asked two more employees if THEY knew what it was. While waiting, I saw the 3 of them scrambling to figure out how to use the waffle machine and were clearly in distress because none of them knew how to do it.Manager walks in, and immediately takes charge and apologizes for my wait and has them remake the waffle and offers a complimentary frappe for the wait. She was very nice and apologetic. After that, I finally got my soft serve with bubble waffle, and frappe. (15 minutes or so later)The soft serve was absolutely delicious. Would eat it 100000x. Very good quality and perfect amount of sweet. I added mochi and matcha powder and it was great. The frappe however fell extremely short which I had high hopes for. It was extremely thick, and the flavor was as close to dirt. I LOVE matcha and I could not even finish a few sips before I had to give up. It broke my heart to throw it away. This place could have really great potential! They just need to get employees that know what they’re selling and doing...I understand it was a soft opening so there will be kinks- but sharing my experience in hopes that it helps the store work itself out in time.Good luck, and we hope to see you in Vegas!

I’ve had matcha maiko in Waikiki and San Francisco. They all taste slightly different with Waikiki being the best (in terms of flavor, smoothness, creaminess), and San Francisco second. That’s not to say that San Diego tastes bad - matcha maiko is good in general. It’s kind of like the dole whip of matcha - it’s just good - whether or not you’re getting it at the dole plantation/Disneyland or not!Service is good and it looks like there are more options than the others locations (like adding a waffle or extra flavors). Nice to see More locations popping up!

Wish the place is a little bit bigger with more cashier then I think it wouldnt be such a long wait time. We waited for 20+ mins. The drinks is great and I have yet to try the rest of the desserts on the menu. I am sure what ever ordered is very good! I have told a few of my friends and plan to continue to come here when in SD.

For the love of Matcha 😍 youll really taste the earth-y matcha goodness! I ordered the Matcha latte float with Matcha Ice cream *no such thing as too much matcha 😂* (FYI, they already have a disclaimer posted in the counter that says this one got a lot of ice in it for the sundae to float so youve been warned 😬)Went here on a Saturday night around 6pm and not so many people are sitted so the time it took them to serve our orders are pretty decent. Ambience is nice as well. Will definitely go back and order again 🤤

WOW! THIS PLACE IS SO FREAKING GOOD! Granted, I only had the green tea and the black tea ice cream cones but frankly, thats all you need! Plus, it was only $5 for a pretty sizable cone! The ice cream was so flavorful and intensifying with each bite that I gobbled it up in minutes. Not only that, the waffle cone itself tasted sweet which is unusual to me, only having unflavored waffle cones before. Overall, it was an amazing experience and I will definitely be coming this establishment time and time again!Just a little bit hot inside, but it is worthy to have a taste!

I went to this place on a busy night and boy do I regret it. I order the Maiko special and added red bean topping to it. 3/4 of the dessert was mostly cornflakes. The cornflakes tasted just like the Frosted Flakes cereal. The red beans, mochi ball and chestnut were warm. Tasted like it was sitting out for a long time no refrigeration to them. Along side that the ice cream on top was melted. I witness a tall lady wearing glasses yelling at one of the employees made the whole experience uncomfortable. In the end I will definitely not be coming back.

This place is small and cozy, large menu and even good desserts to choose. But, when I arrived I asked for non-dairy milk and they said that they dont have, and thats terrible because there are a lot of vegans, vegetarians and non-lactose intolerants in San Diego. They offered me a soy milk I got super sick 10 minutes after drinking my matcha, and thats a shame because the taste of the drink was very good and it was a good quality product. Soy milk is not always the best option. Bring more non-dairy milk products, and it will be amazing.

There are other matcha places in SD that tend to be a bit more “trendy”, but if you are looking for an authentic matcha flavor adventure THIS is the place! Cute, clean location serving up matcha soft serve, true authentic shave ice and matcha drinks. They have a small section of popular Japanese snacks and candies. Great place to take a date or to take kids... they will love the toppings! I am a matcha addict, so I’ve been to a lot of matcha cafes all over LA/SD/OC and this place really impressed me!
