This is literally the most amazing destination to go to score high-end Japanese denim and menswear on the entire East Coast. Its a Mecca for denimheads. I came to Self Edge to try on several Iron Heart type 3 jackets, and came away with the beautiful IHJ-82, indigo dyed corduroy type 3.Besides the beautiful wood accents and antique Persian rug on the floor, the store is no-frills and all about the merchandise. For a Japanese denim enthusiast, this place is like heaven. A must-see place. I was able to check out so many different jackets and different pieces (in different weights of denim) today, something you can never achieve shopping online.I am as white trash as it gets and I didnt find the staff to be upity or elitist in any way. And I think the other negative reviews are ignorant of what this store is selling. The store does not set the prices of the items here... the companies that make the pieces do. There is a reason the stuff here is expensive, it is made by ultra-skilled craftspeople in Japan on antique pre-WW2 looms and sewing machines. They are not mass-produced in sweat shops in 3rd-world counties and are very limited in production. There are typically fewer than 100 pieces of a particular garment in THE ENTIRE WORLD.And then, these pieces here are skillfully curated by, the Japanese raw denim expert and icon Kiya Babzani.I highly recommend a trip here if you are looking for a new pair of jeans... finding the right fit can be tricky and often the sizes are very different than American brands. I recommend looking at their website first and bring your favorite best fitting pair of jeans with you so they can be measured and compared to what is in the store.I had such an excellent time here today and I love my new jacket! Thanks so very much!Edit: also no place that does denim alterations or repair will accept unwashed jeans to be hemmed or repaired. They must be machine washed. So all the negative reviews about their policy in that regard are unfair.

Bought a couple tees staff were very helpful in informing me the tees I wanted might run small and even gave me better options for my built ! But What they didnt know is that Ive done my research. So I came knowing exactly what I want and couldnt be more happier with my purchase! If your looking for quality tees that feels real nice around the body this is it!! I got the ( whitesville knitting t-shirts ) and gotta say quality superb!Go in knowing is a little priceyBut worth it in my opinion.

Brought a pair of raw denim jeans straight from the store to be hemmed. The turnaround was fast (2 days) but Im not thrilled with the work. The chain-stitch looks like it was not done around the entire leg, thread is already coming out and the inner seam was not aligned before the stitch was done. I was recommended by the store to go to Self Edge because of the quality of their chain stitch, but Im not impressed.

Nice denim shop in NYC. They carry most of high end Japanese denim + 3sixteen line ups. I think its good to browse through details of denims you want online and try on different sizes at the shop. They also hem denims using vintage machine.

Self Edge is where I go to take my favorite jeans to get repaired. The quality of work is perfect. You cant even tell anything happened. I often get holes in between the legs. When I find a pair I like I often wear them nonstop. When everything else about the pants is perfect, I take them in to Self Edge and get another year or two out of them.

There are no higher end raw/selvedge denim shops near where I live, so anytime Im in a town with one, I make it a point to stop by and check them out in person, if only to see some of the pieces Ive been drooling over online.Having been to Self Edge in SF and receiving some pretty poor customer service (yet still buying a pair of jeans simply because I knew I was there specifically to pick them up in person) I was on the fence about stopping by here to look for a denim jacket.Really glad I decided to visit in person. Nick was super nice and grabbed a few different options for me that he thought would work. After a few busts, found a perfect-fitting Iron Heart jacket that I picked up. Saved me tons of time measuring and shopping online, plus I got to see and feel the different fabrics and weights.

These guys rock! New to Raw denim and Austin was extremely helpful. Dude was excited to school me on different styles, weights, fits etc. He didnt try to sell me the most expensive pair in the store either. He knew I was a beginner and picked out the perfect pair for me. I was in a rush to catch a flight, so they hemmed and sent my new 3sixteens right to my door. Next time Im in NYC, I know where Im heading!

Avoid this this place like the plague! Its on the LES, on Orchard St.My neighborhood, but youd never know it....Their prices are straight off of Madison Ave.My friends daughter wanted a small black leather bracelet. A single strip of leather about a half inch wide....$145.00!!!???Silver ID wrist chain anyone?....$3,500.00!!!???Are we still on the Lower East Side?Lets get serious. Were talking about jeans right???Im a working musician.Ive been buying sterling silver jewelry, great jeans and leather clothing all over the world for 30 years.Nothing justifies these prices! No matter how overbuilt you think they are.I found this place extremely pretentious and astronomically over priced!Do yourself a favor....Skip it!

Wow, Ive been coming here for years and just aggressively told my jeans werent washed and needed to be in order to be repaired. They were washed on cold with no agitation and not just soaked before dropping off. I mean they still smell like detergent for gods sake. I failed to uncuff them before the wash and apparently some sediment in the cuff will prevent them from repairing a crotch blowout? Interesting. These are my work pants that have been worn regularly for 5 years. I shouldnt be surprised these posers wouldnt know what a well worn pair of jeans looks like. I regret not walking straight to blue in green. Lesson learned.

Walking into the world of high-end denim can be intimidating or confusing for the unfamiliar; Im only recently becoming familiar with this store and Japanese denim in general, but in my experience the staff at Self Edge has been nothing but helpful and informative, walking me through picking a jacket last year and some jeans this year.It goes a long way to research this stuff before you go into the store, so you understand what youre getting into. Yeah, its expensive, but its expensive universally, not just at this store. If you dont like the price, regular jeans are fine too.If you caught me 10-15 years ago, youd see me buying jeans at Dr. Jays or a similar type store in Brooklyn, looking for jeans on Delancey, not Orchard. 10 years ago, guys talking about Red Monkey, buying bulk in NY and going down to VA on the bus to flip them for double - I gotta say I never got it.BUT, if you research a little, you may see what sets the denim sold at Self Edge apart from the brands everywhere else. Watch a video of the Japanese manufacturers making the jeans on youtube and youll understand the honest craftsmanship behind the clothing.

I spent somewhere north of $500 on a pair of jeans here. I still havent forgiven myself for this act, which only could have taken place in a moment of transient psychosis. For starters, the button fly on these supposedly indestructible denims blew out almost immediately. I thought this pair was fit for all manner of ruffians, hell-raisers, and steel workers? How am I supposed to process an elk with my fly wide open? Let alone ride my Honda to Marlowe for a brick chicken...I removed these jeans from my rotation, as they were less a pair of pants and more a window into my crotch, but I resolved to have them fixed before winter (they are extremely thick and thusly, warm). After having not worn the jeans for about 6 months, I pulled them from my closet and presented them to a Self Edge employee, expressing my belief that the jeans were too expensive to be this broken. He flatly refused to have them fixed as they hadnt been washed: this, coming from a denim retail worker who undoubtedly is acquainted with all manner of techniques denim idiots ( thank god ive overcome this shameful malady ) go to so that they may avoid washing their jeans. You see, the Self-Edge seamstress (which is a bit of sexist term, no?) needs to be protected from the modest amount of whatever it is that accumulates on ones jeans over the course of a months worth of wear and 6 months in a closet. After I expressed displeasure with his poor customer service, he informed me that the real reason he wouldnt have them fixed was that I didnt ask nicely. The thing is: I did ask this dude nicely. It was only after he stubbornly refused that I took any sort of tone. So, to recap:- 2 stars to Self-Edge for expensive jeans of questionable quality and at least one employee who power trips on saying no to customers.- 1 star to me for ever setting foot in there in the first place.L8r.
