Dr. David Schaeffer and the staff provided EXCELLENT customer service. They were knowledgeable, patient, and kind. I loved being able to schedule an appointment online. The office was clean and comfortable. Thank you all!

Had a problem with spectacles purchased a while back, they adjust them when needed. Two weeks ago I was told by an employee that nothing can be done now to fix the problem (loose hinge). She was rude and seemed to hate her job. I brought this to the owners attention and was able to return to the store today, only to have the issue taken care of promptly, thoroughly, and very professionally. Josh and Dr. Schaeffer are great, and while their name may have changed, the high quality of professional work has remained the same. My family and I will return!

Nice selection and staff (especially in the glasses section). My appointment was scheduled at 1:45, but I was early, so they saw me about ten minutes early! The doctor was really sweet, and when I told her I didnt like getting dilated, they said that was not a problem. Ill definitely be back! (Oh! My cool new glasses came back in only a week & in time for my trip to Barbados!)

I have never been to Schaeffer Eye Center before and chose it only because they accept my new vision insurance. I walked in without an appointment and they worked me in the same afternoon. Excellent personal service and great selection of frames. Very thorough eye exam by the optometrist (who was very knowledgeable and did a comprehensive exam). I ordered glasses and was told they would arrive in a week, but they arrived within 3 days. Definitely recommend this practice/location!

The doctor was nice but not happy when at checkout they tell me they charge a separate fee for contacts fitting which I have never been charged before anywhere else. I was told I had a $10 copay only to be surprised at checkout with $100 bill. Plus their frames start at $130 which is ridiculous.

My first set of glasses ended up being a little off, came in for an adjustment and one of the optometrists, Borden, ordered a brand new pair at no charge and had them ready in just a few days. Even let me keep my old pair as a backup! Fantastic customer service

I recently had a great experience at Schaeffer Eye Center. Dr. Kaplan and her team were super. My wait time was next to nothing and the staff was attentive and well trained. I loved their use of advanced technology and they were very helpful assisting me in selecting frames and the type lenses that suited my job and lifestyle. My glasses were ready 8 days ahead of schedule. I would highly recommend them.

The quality of eye care is great. However, they do push all kinds of extras. The real trouble begins when you give them your email. I have gotten 47 emails (that I left unread and undeleted anyway) from them since last June. Dont give them your primary email unless you want constant email contact.

I had the same experience as the review below. So, long story short, they will hit you with a fee at the end. Here is the visit in its entirety:I am giving 2 stars because the tech was sweet and until today, had no issue with the OD. Upon arriving at my appointment, the front desk Op Tech could not figure out my insurance information, and saying she needed my Vision ID. I showed her that on my card it said “Vision Identification” and therefore was the vision ID. She called, and it took a total of about 60 seconds, for her to determine my insurance was UHC and billed through Spectera. I had a seat and waited to be taken back. When I was taken back, I began my normal eye exam. I want to again clarify that the tech was very nice, and thorough. About 20 minutes into my exam, the front desk tech came in with printed out information on my eye insurance. She gave it to “P” and said “here’s the information on her coverage.” Again, coverage was never formally discussed with me. The eye exam went normally, and I opted to have the photos taken of my eyes ($32 out of pocket, the only exact amount that was ever mentioned my entire exam and I agreed to) because I was going out of town, and did not want to drive with my eyes dilated. Fast forward to waiting on the Optometrist - she came in, did a NORMAL eye exam (which was identical to what I have had for the past 18 years I have worn glasses / contacts) and never discussed a supposed $75 fitting fee for contacts. I was asked twice do I want to purchase contacts today, to which I replied I typically get them at a discount at Costco. They assured me they price match contacts, so the price would be the same. My reasoning for going into this detail, is that my entire visit, the only prices that were ever discussed were the $32 image fee and that they would price match contacts. After my exam, I went to check out. This was a huge ordeal, because according to my insurance, I am supposed to be covered in full for either contacts or glasses for one year. Both ladies that were helping me check out were kind, but could not figure out my insurance based on the print out they had in front of them. They told me they wanted to wait on another employee to come in today, and would call me about the problem. I told them that was completely fine, as I didn’t need contacts for 2 weeks. I paid $42, my $10 co pay and the $32 image fee, no problem. Today I get a call saying my balance in $248.31. I told them I would order my contacts elsewhere, as insurance covers it. Fine, right? No, because now supposedly I still have a $75 fitting fee to which I was assured “you can just pay with your same HSA card.” Yes I’m aware, but I was never told of this charge. They put me on hold and supposedly asked the Doctor and techs, who all said they had discussed the fee with me. Absolutely inaccurate, which is even more confirmed based on the other review. They didn’t even verify / have a print out of my coverage until 20 minutes into my exam. Not a single person (even when I was checking out) explained a $75 fitting fee. My issue is not with paying it, my issue is with the fact that in healthcare you are to be upfront about charges, not act as though they are a necessary code, and definitely not to lie about discussing the charges with a patient.I have never written a review before, but as someone who worked specifically in medical billing and in a healthcare setting the past 5+ years, I have never lied about expenses to a patient, and always discuss them UPFRONT before beginning treatment. I even joked with my Op Tech about how quickly they got my insurance coverage, and how I’m usually on the phone for hours. It’s disappointing that healthcare professionals still don’t see a reason for discussing patient charges, and even more so that they fabricate doing it. I have used Schaeffer (MyEyeDr) for years, but after this experience I will never use the chain again.

New owner, same terrible practices. There’s no reason to ruin my day every time I want an eye exam by dilating my eyes. Even worse is that they try to up charge you if you ask to not be dilated...what a joke. Their glasses are outrageously priced, and the one pair I ordered from them gives me a headache every time I put them on. They’ve also refused to fix the issue for free...doesn’t matter that they cost $400 even with a discount from my insurance. This company is a scam.

This is the worst managed business I have every experienced. I have been going to the Mountain Brook location on 280 for about two years. I gave them some grace thinking maybe this was a one time problem but time and time again I was waiting extremely long and they never knew if I paid. This past appointment, I waited three hours on a Saturday. Then when I call to discuss my contacts (which I had already paid for) they kept asking me to pay again. This is unacceptable for a business. I strongly suggest not using this business. I am now using Red Mountain EyeCare and the service is incredible!

I recently lost my wallet near Schaeffer Eye Center. Borden Burns, one of the Opticians, found and mailed it back that very same day. A big thanks to Borden and the team over at Schaeffer.
