As others have mentioned, slow service and poor communication. I came in for a quick/on-the-spot repair but halfway through the repair the bolt on my front derailleur broke off. I was told that the mechanic would take a look at it the following week to see if he could get the bolt off, or if we had to order a replacement. I checked in periodically and was often told that they would get to my bike and provide an update later today and tomorrow. Long story short, my bike was at the shop a little over 3 weeks. I would have appreciated an honest and realistic time estimate from the beginning. My brakes, which were replaced during the visit, were also squeaky when It came back to me. I would return to the shop only to have the squeaking return after after a day or so. The mechanic often talked trash about REI, but in my opinion they have not proven to be any better.

BikeSpace DC used to be my go-to Bike Shop. These guys worked with you and offered options to fix things. Their repair times were honest. But in the last few months, these guys have cut corners as they deal with being overwhelmed from the pandemic. Ive gone by the shop for parts or quick fixes and been told flat out No. As in No, we cant repair anything right now. and No, we dont think you should install that part. This attitude isnt so much Hey, we know better. but We just dont have the time for you. Essential repairs only So, save your time and money from trudging out to their remote location and go to a bike shop closer in.

The front desk is several feet away from the front door. I was told via a sign at the entry to stand and wait. Waited for several minutes without even a greeting or heads up that someone would be with me shortly. The employee yelled from the upper level about standing in the doorway. In which the barricade at the front informs you to do so. To many other bikes shops with great service to have to deal with poor customer service like that.

Rude and ironically elitist. A prime example of exclusionary culture in cycling. A business not worth supporting.[Laughs] Nope. Goodbyeeee. Except he didnt hang up he just awkwardly hung out out on the line.Thats the response of a shop employee to a customer looking for a part to buy for their bike. After calling half the shops in DC looking a mount to put a Garmin cycling computer on a set of aerobars, this interaction stood out as by far the worst. Its probably the worst I have ever had with a retail establishment of any kind.I get that its not a common part, but given that they offer Guru fits at up to $500 a session specifically for TT bikes so its not unreasonable to consider giving them a call. Except it was.

The man who worked on my bicycle was very helpful in explaining to me what I should do to take care of my bicycle, even above and beyond the flat tire repair that was required. I will definitely come back to this store for future repairs. The cost of my flat tire repair was $37.07, definitely worth the trouble I was having with my bicycle up until now. If zero stars was an option I would give this place that rating.I went to this facility to get bikes for my children. Due to COVID-19 a lot of our interactions were outside of the facility. The young man helping my family was very helpful and pleasant. When I went inside the shop I was met by a very nasty man. Him and I got into a heated dispute because frankly he does not know how to talk to people. After waiting for almost an hour outside, I was greeted with a nasty tone. At the end of the day the bikes were not cheap and being a consultant that deals with clients daily you have to know how to talk to people. He was very nasty because he felt like my noise was not covered though he cut me off while talking to the man that was helping us and my infant child took her mask off and we did not notice because she was sitting on her sisters lap in a stroller. I was happy to adjust but he yells out I cannot have a family in here with no mask. Everyone had a masks on and the infant who was two also had a mask but she took it off because she was an infant adjusting to a new normal.I do understand businesses have a lot of pressure to make sure people are social distancing and wearing masks but there is a way you speak to people. This mam was nasty and I would never shop here again.

BicycleSpace has been my shop for almost ten years now. I used to frequent the K St. and Adams Morgan shops when they were still around, but now I make the trek out to Ivy City because its worth it. Ive tried a few other shops nearer to me in Columbia Heights, strictly out of convenience, but I always come back to BicycleSpace. This last visit was under the unfortunate circumstances of me having been hit by a car while on my bike. BicycleSpace performed an insurance assessment for me, and was very communicative and sympathetic to my situation. Everything was very transparent, and they had thoughtful suggestions for for my recovery, and for what type of bikes to look for when Im good to ride again. I mostly dealt with Phil, and had a phone call with Robert, both of whom Ive had very good shop experiences with in the past. I might not be riding for a while, but this experience has only strengthened my loyalty to BicycleSpace.

Gil was very condescending and rude. I got my bike as a gift and after asking to have my inner tubes replaced and to potentially get a rack put on he went on and on about how my bike was a “cheap fake track bike just to look ‘cool’” it was completely irrelevant and literally had nothing to do with the repair. I didn’t ask his opinion he could have just said the rack wouldn’t fit. I’m a young woman sadly I’m used to men speaking to me with superiority and condescension. I thought it was that at first but then I watched him do the EXACT same thing to the man in front of me in line telling him how there was nothing to do cause his bike was “cheap” and then going on some rant about how much experience he has and how much he knows. I treat people with kindness and respect when it’s given . Clearly this person does not. Customer service and kindness goes a long way. The other guy there was nice.

I have used this shop a couple times. The first time I felt like the value was high and that the mechanic who helped me was great. Second time, different mechanic and he was nice and all, but I find $37 for 10 minutes of work to install a 9 dollar part (that I previously bought and brought in) to be a bit much. I expected $15-20 since for an experienced professional it was a quick job, and the first time was about the same amount of time and cost that much. From now on I will spend the extra hour of my own time to save the $37 if at all possible.

I love this shop. It isnt just one person, everyone Ive dealt with there has been just awesome.I went in initially because I was looking to buy a better around the city bike than my road race bike. Well, the city chose for me when my bike was stolen while I was having lunch with a friend. Im tall, but I have back problems, and I still wanted a relatively quick bike with a similar feel to my race bike. They spent an incredible amount of time helping fit me, letting me go back and forth, and generally not pressuring me into anything before I was comfortable. We ordered a smaller frame and a longer stem and seat post to make sure the fit was right, they know their products well enough to mix and match frames and the various components to get you where you are comfortable and efficient on your bike. After that I spent 45 minutes trying on different helmets to get the sizing just right. They were never anything other than helpful and laid back as I decided what I wanted to do.In the end the prices were also fair, especially when considering the level of service. Also, and you might not care if you just need a tire changed, but they are good members of the community. They are constantly involved in pro-bike issues in the area and they are working hard to help more people feel comfortable biking in the city and enjoying the urban riding we have in DC.I bought my bike almost a year ago and I continue to be impressed by them every time I go back, whether to pick up small things, repair a flat, or just see what is going on.

This place was awesome to deal with. I got a flat tire near the Washington Monument with no spare or repair kit. There are no bike shops nearby. So I carried my bike to this store (not knowing anything about it but that it was the closest to where I was.) When I got there, I was sweaty, dirty, and not a happy camper. Two of the store employees came up to see if they could help. When I explained the situation, they told me to bring the bike in and theyll fix it. I declined, stating that I just need two tubes and a bike tool. They sold me what I needed without any problem. They offered to let me use their tools, and were more than understanding. The only reason that Im not giving them 5 stars is that their selection of bike tools was a little slim. They didnt have any alien tools or anything. But, that aside, they were a pleasure to deal with and I was on my way.

I can only describe the experience as bizarre - the main repair tech kept talking about how much he knew about bikes (I never asked for that information and never questioned the mans credentials). His tone vacillated between amicable and contemptuous. One of the first comments he made to me was that the bike was too big for me. This was the bike that Bicycle Space staff recommended to me as an appropriate fit when I originally bought it. The repair tech did do a good job making the repair (a stripped screw that I caused) and he did give helpful safety advice. I had a couple of people suggest this shop to me because it was close and they had good experiencs there. I dropped my Schwinn off because I hit a deep pot hole which damaged my wheels and flattened my tires, which was my only complaint. Since I had a friend put it together, they noted that something was on backwards that shouldnt have been. Between those two complaints, someone called me up and told me everything that needed to be done to the bike, just to confirm, and I was quoted around $80.When the repairs were done, there were several more items that were apparently faulty with the bike, but I was not informed of before they were repaired. So that $80 jumped to $140. That was very inconsiderate. I know this rapidly gentrified city is filled with people with money to waste, but as a medical student with no income on a fixed budget AND at the end of the school year, that jump in price hurt my pockets more than their average clientele, I guess. I did complain about it to the manager who called me, but alas, in the end I still paid it. Will have to make adjustments in my budget elsewhere. Guess I wont be eating meat for a couple of months.I know nothing of bikes and my Schwinn cost like $160 (its a cruiser hybrid just for traveling a couple of miles a day to school and back, nothing fancy), had I known it would have cost me nearly the same as the bike, I would have either waited when I had money in the new school year or picked it back up and sold the thing for parts and invested in a new bike.My experience might have been an outlier, considering the average rating, but if anyone else out there is looking for decent bike repairs at a reasonable cost and with transparency with what is being done to your bike, this place isnt it, given my experience. But the bike does ride great, so I gave it two stars instead of one star.

At BicycleSPACE, its going to plan and publicize massive community party rides, its going to an owner (Erik) who can be found at community meetings and volunteer days and advocacy efforts helping make his neighborhood a better place, and its going to a staff that cares less about getting you on one of their new bikes, and more about just getting you riding, however you choose. Even though Im a bit of a hipster and was looking for a single speed commuter bike, they couldnt give me any good information about getting a bike well suited for me. This shop clearly tailors to aesthetics more than function.

I came in with my four year old today - have been riding around DC the past two days on rented bikes. Stopped by to look at a Brompton folding bike. Ive read a lot about them, but wanted to see one hands on. Rachel welcomed us and took us through the tour of the Rolls Royce of folding bikes, invited me to ride it, then took us down to the basement to show us other models, and several of the features. She was very helpful, and made it a great experience shopping at Bicycle Space. Fantastic service and a great feeling in the shop!

This is a review for the former location on K Street NW. I had a couple positive experiences and one pretty awful one. Oh the + side, the mechanics do a better job with customer service than most. I myself havent encountered the classic Condescending Bike Mechanic Attitude in that shop. They were also involved in the community and seemed to do a good job of promoting cycling in general.Unfortunately the customer service still isnt great. I had a tubeless tire swap go extremely haywire -- at one point the mechanic tried to inflate what was NOT a tubeless tire and tried to send me out the door even though you could literally hear air escaping. It then took them three weeks to contact me after leaving the wheel with them (I was out of the country), and fifteen minutes to locate my wheel when I went to retrieve it. I was told it got lost in the shuffle as they prepared to move, but they could now order another tire (it would add several more days) and I could have the labor done at their other location. Instead I bought a high-pressure pump and did the work myself.

The people are nice but everything is overpriced. I was charged $80 for a break change. Over half of that price was labor for 15 minutes. Go to Bicycle Pro Shop in Georgetown for honest service with and reasonable prices.

VERY VERY bad Experience, I am highly disappointed in the service I receive today. I came in for a simple derailleur adjustment, I basically just wanted a fine adjustment on top of my adjustment and right off the back they took advantage of me, by lying about what can and cant be fixed to make more money. After it was all said and done. The mechanic didnt know how to fix my problem. But he CHARGE me FULL PRICE because he said he made it better, Which he did not I actually did a better job at home before I brought it to the bike shop. Every bike shop Ive been to I was never a charge for something they cant fix. I feel like I was rob after paying 50 bucks for nothing. I live a block away from this bike shop and will never be returning again.PS I would to speak to the owner!!!

Very knowledgeable, extremely helpful - open to discussing/commenting (and even revamping!) an old bike. Very refreshing, especially when old bikes just get a yawn and a sigh from everywhere else.

Was on vacation in DC came into the store on the off chance to see if they could source a tire for my Alex Moulton bike. Left my number didnt think anymore about it. A week later I get a call saying they were unsuccessful in tracking a tire down after calling around to other bike stores, they even sourced the tire manufacturer and called them directly....I was blown away by BicycleSPACEs customer service considering I did not spend a penny in there store.

I stopped by BicycleSPACE after my front tire had an early morning tryst with someones lonely, discarded earring. With my poor tire dejected and deflated, I looked for bike shops close to work and BicycleSPACE was the only one that was close enough to overcome my aversion to the blazing heat that has become DC in July.I dropped in expecting to buy two tubes (one for now, one for the next inevitable flat.) As expected, they had the tubes (as all bike shops likely do.) The offer to install it was reasonably priced so I agreed (avoiding grease on my work clothes was worth it) and they proceeded to do so.Normally, a quick tire change would not warrant a review, but the ensuing test of the rim and bearing action, explanation of the results, and no pressure advice on what might be worth investigating later made me inclined to do so. Our discussion of my other bike (an ancient Silver Shadow from Japan) and the excitement the repair staff had about my possibly bringing it by to replace the crankshaft & refurb the bike impressed me. They very clearly love bicycles... it would not be a stretch to call them bicycle nerds in an absolutely positive way.If youre in the vicinity, I absolutely recommend.

Sad to see the K street location close, but everything below also applies to the Ivy City location. Hope to see a downtown location open up eventually.---The best location of the best bike shop in DC. Despite the boutique appearance, this location has the best selection of Bromptons, Brooks, and most other things. Also the most experienced repair staff anywhere. All my bikes get serviced here, and the staff understands the little things. Another shop scoffed at the idea that I wanted a particular alignment to my fenders, whereas BicycleSpace staff understood right away and installed and delivered just what I wanted.

I use a chair to get around. I was in DC for a conference. Sunday night, after 7. Lincoln Memorial, 90 degrees. My tire blows. Pushed a mile on the flat. Broke a number of spokes. Nothing open. Back to hotel. Night ruined.Called BicycleSPACE first thing Monday morning. They had me bring it right over. I stayed in bed at the hotel while my wife ran it over. Fixed! I was back in business. As an FYI: my chair has $6000 wheels on it, with motors in the hub and servos in the hand rims. The spokes are custom, 6 long. They couldnt help me then with the spokes because they didnt have anything like them (and, as a bike shop, not a wheelchair repair shop, I certainly didnt expect them to - heck, 99% of wheelchair shops dont even stock them). I rolled gingerly around my conference with 8 spokes missing on one side. Ordered them in. When my new spokes arrived, I called BicycleSPACE and they fit me in again right away. They had never seen a wheel like mine but it didnt phase them in the least. They treated it and me with great care. Had the new spokes on and the wheel trued in a little over an hour. Couldnt have gotten better service and support. The bill was quite fair. And the wheel has never rolled more true. Now I can finish the week and beyond rolling without fear of collapse. To someone whos wheels are his legs, that means the world. So thankful to find this oasis, far from home, in the middle of my nasty dilemma. I would recommend them to anyone.

Woah! I have been to quite literally every bike shop in DC and over 20 shops in Maryland over the past five years. Without a doubt, Bicycle Space provided the absolute best experience Ive ever had in a bike shop. I interacted with Austin and Kate when I had to bring in my road bike for a few quick adjustments. I had just finished building my bike and was still experiencing a couple problems and Austin was very keen to help get to the bottom of them. He spent 30 minutes helping me and answering all of my very specific bike questions. In the end, he was able to fix all of my problems and answer all but one of my questions. Here is the best part: for the question that he didnt know he said he would contact the Shimano reps and get an answer for me! What amazing service and dedication to keeping the customer happy and informed. Needless to say they got a huge tip and a customer for life. Their prices are amazingly fair and they even have basic tools at the front that they will let you use for quick fixes. Definitely go here so you can get your bike serviced properly and quickly by their friendly expert mechanics.

This is my favorite bicycle shop in DC. All the know-how with none of the pretentiousness. Their selection is great; lots of nice Cannondale and Felt and assorted others. Ive had a couple friends purchase bikes from here and their experiences were all stellar. I havent purchased a bike from this store (yet) but when I brought my Scott SUB 10 in to have it fitted with a trailer coupling, one of their mechanics (Rob) recognized it from 8 years ago when he rebuilt my drivetrain. Impressive. He knows his stuff and is tons of fun to talk shop with.

AMAZING service! I took in a used bike that I bought off craigslist and they helped me get it fixed up. They told me that it didnt need some of the work and parts that I thought it might need -- so they saved me money when they could have easily sold me stuff I didnt need yet. Ive had a couple of emergencies that theyve fixed on the spot.

Went in today looking for a new hybrid to join my road bike. Rachel was amazing, the entire staff really - every question I had was answered. I came out with a different bike that I went in to test ride, road several bikes and they helped me modify/customize/add what I needed. Ended up with a SWEET Cannondale Quick CX1 that I cant wait to ride. Great team they have there.

My back tire got stolen off my bike I brought my bike here with very low expectations about getting it fixed. But Gil had everything he needed and had me back on the road within 24hrs. So glad they have stayed open during this covid situation. **they are taking serious precautions with customers and equipment so be patient if you go to the store.

We had a very friendly and helpful staff person that sold us two bikes and a lock. She asked if we wanted the lock mounted on and we said yes. She said it would be about 30 minutes, so we took a walk. When we came back to get them, we learned they they let someone else take my bike out on a test run; the bike that I had already bought. Im upset that they would let someone take my expensive property out without asking. But I do really like my bike, so three stars it is.

Yeah, this was pretty much the regular treatment you get when you dont know anything about bikes. They take advantage of that like any other shop would, and lie about what can and cant be fixed. I had a wheel that doesnt even have a visible bend in it, and they told me it was so out of shape, it could never be fixed. I fixed it with ease once I watched a couple Youtube videos. The guy who was helping me tried to guilt me into buying a $40 cassette because Cmon, I got you like 15% off that tube. Yeah, buddy. Great job, you saved me a whole $1.50 on a $141 fix. Youre a hero.I also really liked the part where I said Id replace the part myself, and they exchanged looks and said, Well, you cant because you need a special tool. That special tool is a goddamn piece of metal slightly larger than a thimble that goes for $8 on Amazon.Unfortunately for me, I went in because I didnt know anything about bikes. Now I do, and I know theyre scum. Happy hunting.Edit: Now theyve requested that I get in contact with them. I did. I heard nothing back for over two weeks and counting. Amazing job, guys.
