I needed new rigging, overall inspection, and bottom paint for a block island 40 yawl (based on the hinckley bermuda 40) I had just bought in Stuart. I called several yards in the area for quotes, and didnt bother to call Hinckley, assuming they would be out of my price range. until I read a few reviews indicating that their prices were in the middle of the pack. I found out this was actually true....the haul, paint, and splash were actually about $100 less than the cheapest competitor, and they didnt charge any yard fees for the work days. But the impressive part was the timely service. Tad, the yard manager oversaw their expert rigger who did a great job on my yawl, and everything was on time and at the exact cost. I left the yard, went down the intracoastal 20 miles and decided my steering was shot. i also noticed the motor driven fridge compressor bracket was broken and the dripless shaft seal was leaking...back 20 miles to hinckley, who made a spot for me at the marina and squeezed me into their schedule to address the problems. This was just as their season was starting, but they knew I needed to get the boat to galveston, tx. I told them I would be back in 2 weeks and needed a place to keep the boat and all the work done by then...Tad figured it out, coordinated the work, and once again, all on time and on budget. Really the best yard experience I have ever had.

A boat broker sent us to the marina where the marina staff was happy to help us find our way to the boat we were looking at. Looks like a very nicely equipped facility with the ability to haul out anything small to gigantic.

We stay at Hinckley every year and are always happy with our accomodations. Helpful and friendly folks. The facilities are clean and well-maintained. Im impressed with the amount controlled environment work space, the fabrication shops, and the shear size of the yachts that are hauled out on the hard. My favorite thing to do is a walk around the yard to check out boats and enjoy the bustling work during the week. Ive met lovely people in the surrounding neighborhood too on these walks including the resident tortoises that I get to visit each time.

One star is a stretch for this no class operation and for the service/yard manager Chuck. If I was a good looking female boat owner he would have bent over backwards to get my parts and my repairs done. Ive watched him in action. I had my boat there for close to two weeks before I got a call that it needed more parts than originally quoted which they didnt have. I later found out from a fellow Hinckley employee that Chuck was delivering parts to a female boat owner instead of paying attention to my boat in the yard. She gets 5 Star treatment. Service/treatment like this shouldnt be tolerated. He shouldnt do favors for someone he is dating and ignore others. Ladies, watch out, he will deliver for you, but expect more. He has no class. Ill go to another boat yard like American.

I know boatyards. I own a boat transport company. This yard is top of the line. Chuck the Yard Supervisor is a class act. In the pouring rain, after hours, he came out and unloaded me instead of waiting till the next day. This kind of service does not exist except at top of the line boatyards. Remember Hinckley sells service not price. You may save $50 at the boatyard next door, but will they be there for you when you really need them?

Dont believe everything you read.Although some people have taken to berating the performance of one specific individual, my experience has not been the same.Hinckley is a quality establishment and sometimes that means demand is high and patience is required.I have also had the pleasure of dealing with Chuck and find him to be honest, thoughtful and intelligent. No complaints about favoritism or neglect from me. He is very busy but that doesnt mean he doesnt care or isnt qualified. We store our 40 sailboat here in the summers and have work done here as well (in tandem with our own efforts, where we want this). This place is good and gets my vote as a REPEAT CUSTOMER.

With such great reviews we decided to use Hinckley to paint our boat. Expensive, but good, right? WRONG. We got a bid to have our 49 Hylas to have our yacht painted in Awlgrip in January 2016. We have used Awlgrip paint before and found it to be durable, easy to clean and long lasting. A few weeks after we got the bid to paint the topsides in Awlgrip by Brian the manager, we were handed off to Chuck to coordinate the work we needed done. Then came the hard sell (emails and phone calls) from Chuck to use Imron paint. Imron paint is cheaper than Awlgrip and in hindsight we felt that was the reason for the big push to use Imron. Although we loved Awlgrip we decided the professionals knew better and so we went with their product Imron. We felt that on every step Hinkley pushed us to do more and more work we felt unnecessary. It always started with “at Hinckley we do it this way because it’s the best. They faired the transom and built it up with a compound to fix a few dings. We were not in Florida when the work was done which was Big mistake. When we arrived in late January the first issues started. First issue was we had covered our boat to protect the deck from the harsh Florida weather .We always do this when leaving our boat in storage. Hinckley removed it when they stepped the mast right after we left and never replaced as they deemed it unnecessary. We reminded them to put it back on after the mast was stepped and were assured they would do so. When we returned the deck needed to be waxed and the sun had damaged fabrics in the boat and other damage from being uncovered and unattended. Next we track down the edges! had new signs put on the boat. When I showed Chuck that they were peeling, he suggested a little clear nail polish on the edges to keep them from peeling off! I was starting to regret using Hinckley. Most worrisome was the paint job. The Imron just wasnt the right type of paint for a sailboat that actually gets used. This became apparent a few months later. We sailed from Hinckley directly to the Bahamas and Cuba for 4 months. The boat was only in a marina once where it was rinsed down and washed. It was there we noticed that salt had etched the paint. When we returned to Hinckley five months after the initial painting we had to haul the boat and they had to use an acid to remove the salt. Even the yard and paint distributor said they had never seen anything like it. Never in 25,000 miles of sailing with Awlgrip had we ever used anything but Awlgrip wash to clean our boat of salt residue. It always looked great. Next issue was discovered by the guys who polished the boa. He t noticed small cracks all over the transom. Brian tried to explain it as fiberglass from under the bonding they used was suddenly erupting through the paint. Riduculous? Of course. But our choice was to stay in Florida and haggle with Hinckley or just consider this a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson. We realized we would never be satisfied and left. We are currently in Europe and have now noticed that everything scratches this paint. Mooring lines that rub remove the paint down to the primer. Bumpers rubbing wear off the paint, a small bump on a plastic dock scratches. Even my finger nail can scratch through the paint! Two professional painters here in Europe laughed at their explanation on why the transom had cracks. Both explained it was too much compound used and the compound was cracking underneath. This of course makes more sense. I will say that Hinckley did reimburse me the costs of the signs. Lessons learned .Never would I recommend Imron paint and never would I recommend Hinckley Boat yard

I cannot recommend Hinckley Yacht Services in Savannah based on poor customer service and untimely/incomplete repair. (See details below.)1-Boat fire January, 2015 on my Grady White 33 Express2-Told boat was ready March 19th, 2016 (after about 70Kof repair)3- March 19th: rear bench seat missing, helm with hole covered in black duct tape, no cushions on board (interior or exterior) and filthy boat. Water standing on the teak/holly cabin floor leaving permanent mildew stain. (Some cushions later located in garbage bags on site with extensive dry rot)4-Lost time and money in attempted pickup of boat March 19th due to dog boarding, childcare, and non-refundable hotel5-The following week met with yard manager and surveyor. Fishbox (which is large and encompasses most of my transom) insulated with open cell foam insulation. Reviewed items listed above.6- Pick up date moved to May 20 by Hinckley.7-During May 18th sea trial, unrepaired items included: Windlass, spotlight, missing screws in freezer plates and other small items8-Independent surveyor (hired by me) advised to allow two more weeks.9-Boat retrieved June 2nd, 2016, with a 13K bill. (Still awaiting my insurance company to reimburse me for a large portion.)10-At pick up, boat looked great. Small items noted were fish box missing gas shock, mounting pieces around autopilot, and a screw mounting autopilot, which I agreed to handle.11-Upon arrival to Charleston, heavy scum and growth noted on engines from the waterline down. I inquired via email how long the engines were lowered and was told 1-1.5 weeks.12-Current update: starboard engine will not flush with fresh water, coolant container for the diesel generator found empty. (I refilled it and ran the generator and it sucked it dry. One more round and it has hopefully leveled out.) I will be checking when I return to the boat on Thursday.13-Autopilot quit working between sea trial and Charleston.
