This place is CASH only.Ordered Ham, egg and cheese. Its good. Also ordered Mexican omelette. It was delicious. Must try. Mexican omelette comes with hash, toasted bread(white, whole wheat or rye) and butter on the side.

Small Diner with a huge personality. I came during the rush and had a seat at the bar. The wait staff was busy but are very attentive. Traditional American breakfast with huge portions. Had so much fun with the bar/counter waiter. This diner had so much charm.

My family and I always stop here to eat when we’re in Summit. It’s a classic for a reason! Cash only but there’s a Chase atm right across the street. My family’s favorite is the meatloaf sandwich, but I also love the lamb gyro (with Greek fries). There are a lot of great Greek flavors and dishes as well as diner classics. The location is really unique though quite small so if you go during rush hours you may have a wait to be seated especially in cold weather when outdoor seating isn’t open.

A tiny rail car with amazing home cooking feel. These guys are the absolute best but know what you want and move along! There’s not a lot of seating!! The bacon egg and cheese sandwiches cannot be topped!!

Very delicious and hearty breakfast food. It got out to us (2 people) relatively quickly. The service was kind and prices were cheap, and on top of that you get a ton of food for what you pay. A really good “bang for your buck” type place with a nice atmosphere in Summit. It was hard to find parking nearby but if you can find some, the Summit Diner is a must try!

If Im going on a long road trip I make sure I take a route to get me for a pit stop at the Summit Diner. Its such a nostalgic taste of Americana, staff is incredibly sweet, everything is prepared in house, even the mashed potatoes! Do yourself a favor and get a couple of slices of cream pie. SO GOOD!

Loved the old box car, and location is perfect for outdoor dining. There late morning, 3 of the 4 of us did breakfast, my son could not decide, so he ordered both pancakes and the chicken sandwich, both aces. My blueberry pancakes had the prefect ratio. We cant wait to go back, next time we are in NJ.

First time visting this historic diner. It was quite busy, but the food and service were excellent. The one criticism has nothing to do with the food or the staff. Rating only 4 stars due to two customers who insisted on sneaking drags on their vapes, and who made a show of coughing over peoples tables as they waited to pay their bill. Otherwise great food and looking forward to visiting again.

The food was great (breakfast), and the service was also great. The only downside for me is the size - to say its cramped is a bit of an understatement, but we got there early. Not a place to linger over a cup of coffee, but definitely worthwhile!

Great original (OG) NJ Diner. Located right in the heart of Summit NJ. Great for breakfast if you like giant pancakes & fresh grilled grub. Lunch is also excellent. Food is fresh, always busy. Very quick & flexible.

A Summit tradition. Have been getting the breakfast sandwiches for 25+ years. Taylor Ham egg and cheese on a fresh roll and the sausage egg and cheese are my families favorite. Highly recommend. They have some outside tables too!

It was my first time there. Coming in the owner was extremely rude. Very nasty comments. The food and service was fine but I do not think a owner should treat their customers like that. We didnt realize it was cash only and when we went to pay our bill he had more rude comments. I liked the idea behind the place and the historical features but the floors were dirty and space is over all cramped.

I had high expectations after reading the reviews but was disappointed. Not a shiny clean retro diner. Just old and tired. The waitress was friendly.

This landmark diner car eatery is a must visit for breakfast and lunch lovers who crave a taste of authentic Americana in a vintage setting. A staple for a number of New Jersey’s luminaries and reputedly a regular stop for Hemingway when he wrote for a local paper early in his career, the Summit Diner is an anomaly in a nice town full of culinary variety. No need to gush over the delicious food, I’ve never had a bad dish or bad experience in this treasure. You get more than you pay for and despite being cash only, it delivers value for dollar, an increasing rarity in the monotonous diner universe. The booths are tight and overall space is small but that adds to the great flavor of the food and service. A Jersey must.

I grew up in Summit, NJ in the 50s and recently came back to visits and had to go for lunch to the Summit Diner. It wouldnt be a visit to Summit without going to the diner. Perfect atmosphere and great food, served fast too. I had two friends from England with me and it was the highlight of their trip too. Thank you Summit Diner for making it memorable.

Proper diner etiquette, should be kind, and not pushy. Food was average, service was nice, the guy who accepted my Money kicked us out.I never mentioned anything about cash only, when informed to pay cash, I went and attained cash. In any other establishment noMatter the size it is rude to tellSomeone they need to leave, you didn’t suggest that “next time when you pay you should leave” you aggressively and condescendingly said “when you pay you leave” honestly you should really re consider how you interact with your guests. I mean unless you want to be known as a unapproachable individual. I was sitting finishing my Coffee that I paid for, be grateful people spend money not the opposite.

This place is over 90 years old.I was extremely pleased with my meal!Cream of Turkey soup was homemade, and DELICIOUS I had a chicken sandwich which had a mild seasoning. My tongue is still hanging out.Just try this place !Come dressed very casual.💖💖💖💖💖

Food is amazing.. I would give 5 stars but today when we ordered a to go order we asked for our home fries to be made well done and they told me thats a Monday kinda thing but we will try. I dont think thats an unusual or difficult thing to request. Im still wondering what that even means? Cooking home fries a couple extra seconds I dont think deserves an answer like that.

One of the best diners in new Jersey !! I took the train out here from linden. It took me about an hour & a half lol totally worth it !! Food is fresh & the vibe is nice. Brings you back to the 40s. Cash only when you come here.

I went to the Summit Diner because I read an article about it being historic, but the food did not disappoint. The lentil soup was delicious and came out hot like it should. The fries were cooked perfectly. My reuben was wonderful and prepared with care right in front of me. The friendly staff and good price was a bonus!

Ordered the turkey dinner. There was no cranberry sauce which always comes with turkey. However the most puzzling thing was the mashed potatoes. It had a distinct taste-like apple cider vinegar or pickle juice. I am not kidding. I casually asked the gentleman in charge how he made the mashed potatoes as it had an unusual flavor. He looked at me like I was crazy and said he added salt, pepper and butter. Needless to say I did not eat the potatoes as something else was in it. My grandsons loved their cheeseburger and grilled cheese.

I’ve always passed this place and never gave it a shot. From the outside it looks small and old and not much changes on the inside, HOWEVER, they make delicious and fair priced food. I felt welcomed right away with a smile from the cook (who is also maybe the owner?). I tried two soups, lentil and chicken orzo, and yum! The lentil wasn’t bland by any means and had a different flavor than what I’m used to.. in a good way. I also tried the cheese steak and burger and both were tasty. I’d say overall it was great and i enjoyed how they keep to their original look. I will definitely be coming back.

Let me tell you something. I love diners. Im from Jersey. Its in my blood. But this diner. It might be the smallest one Ive ever been in, and it was far from fancy but out of all the diners Ive tried in my lovely home state, this was BY FAR the best Ive ever had. The grilled chicken sandwich and the French onion soup was as good as you can have it. The staff is so incredibly friendly. We will hands down be back here again. Many times.

Great food in such a tiny package! Every time I’ve gone, they have gotten my order right. The converted train car gives it a cozy feel, which goes along with the tasty food. I highly recommend corned beef and egg and sausage for any meal. If you want authentic diner food, come here.

I wish I could give zero stars instead. If youre looking for a good diner experience dont come here. The food was alright but after we paid (cash only because they are tax evaders) and left a tip and were finishing our coffee, the guy running the diner had the gall to kick us out because we were taking too long. We left a nice tip because the waitress told us to take our time but of course after she took the tip the big man kicked us out. We will never return for their subpar greasy food and terrible customer service. Avoid this diner if you want a good experience.

I went there frequently because I liked the ambiance but service is gruff at best. Prices good. Food okay. Recently my wife and I went there for breakfast. Waited more than 20 minutes for a simple order. Waitress snarled at me when I asked about the order. We finally got up to leave. I told the owner at the register we had been waiting 20 minutes. His response: “Well, you might have to wait a half an hour!” They appeared to be concentrating on take out orders. If you feel that this kind of attitude is part of the Summit Diner’s charm, enjoy!

Nothing has changed in the 60 years i have been going here. Still enjoy the corned beef hash and eggs, no menu, good coffee. Difficult for handicapped parking at a premium
