I write to assist any prospective boat buyer with meaningful information regarding the value of a great boat broker. Ian Van Tuyl is a great broker. Why? He is knowledgeable, accessible, and conscientious.Let me explain briefly my journey to buying my first cruising sailboat. While I had many years of experience sailing and racing small one-design sailboats, I had zero knowledge of cruising boats. Like many, I started by looking online and going to boat shows. My budget did not permit me to purchase a new vessel. The used boat market is filled with for-sale-by-owner boats and less than scrupulous brokers hoping to unload their clients’ vessels. Ian generously assisted me without asking for any compensation as I looked at FSBO’s and other listed boats. During our conversations he listened to what I (and maybe more importantly, my wife) wanted. He offered valuable input on various vessels – even on FSBO’s where he had no expectation of a commission.During the boat-buying process, which took almost 1-year from casual online looking to active touring of various boats through to the actual purchase of our boat (Syrah 99 Jeanneau SO 36.2), I gained much appreciation for Ian’s tremendous knowledge of all aspects of a cruising boats. I also appreciated his responsiveness to a novice’s questions - at all hours of any day.Ian made the buying process easy and seamless and gave me valuable advice throughout, including things such as insurance on, and documenting of, the vessel. Anyone who has purchased a used boat knows the value of having competent service providers after the purchase. I bought my 28’ Catalina 6 years ago. Even though it was a comparatively cheap boat compared to some of the big beautiful yachts on Ian’s selection, he treated me as a most valued customer. 6/5 stars. We have had the pleasure to work with some of Ian’s Clients. As a yacht management company that specializes in preventative maintenance for private use, its sometimes a slippery slope getting a Refferal from a broker. A dishonest broker usually leads to a poor boating experience and mismanaged expectations. Ian is completely the opposite. Not only are all of his clients happy with their purchases, Ian goes the extra mile to assist them after the boat is sold to assist them with anything they need. Ian was referred to us by a friend of ours. This guy does not disappoint. He grew up in the boating industry and held a myriad of jobs in the industry growing up, so this guy knows boats. After our first meeting and review of the boat we agreed upon list price that we both believed was a fair market price (not cheap). Within 3 days we had an offer. Ian managed everything and certainly knows how to close a deal. He was a pleasure to work with. Personally, I’ve been boating for over 40 years and have had as many boats, as I’ve had cars - Ian is perhaps the best Yachtbroker I’ve run across.

While looking for sailboats a few years back, I remembered seeing a few of Ian’s YouTube videos. Recently I came across a Catalina sailboat I was interested in, and noticed it was offered for sale by Ian’s Yacht / Sailboat broker company.For some reason I had thought he was mainly a Jeanneau, Beneteau and luxury catamaran specialist, but after taking a quick look, I noticed he had also represented a lot of 40’ and 50’ class Catalinas, as well as high end powerboat luxury yachts.After seeing a Yacht World listing, I emailed a quick question and got an email back within 15 minutes. Keep in mind, my inquiry was about a 30 foot class Hunter, so I was surprised to get quick attention on a sail boat that wasn’t as expensive as some of this large sailboat listings.Ian was totally cool, and was concerned about helping me determine what monohull sailboat was best for me and the budget I was working with, and if I needed financing to possibly get into a larger boat, if it was something I would consider. He also had great tips on what to consider in the low 30’ class. All super helpful info.Ian is based out of San Diego, but he sent me info on prospective boats in Ventura, Marina Del Ray, Long Beach, Newport and Dana Point areas. He had also mentioned to consider boats in Alameda and said boat delivery to Southern California was a lot easier than I probably thought.Long story short, the boat Ian got an offer an was sold. I was also surprised with the curtesy email I received about the pending offer and the blatant pricing of that offer and a last chance to consider the boat. But it was a good offer, and the boat owner accepted.Shortly after that, I found a ‘for sale by owner’ and had a few questions. Again, Ian got back to me within half an hour and was incredibly helpful. He mentioned that since I had already talked to the seller personally, he didn’t think it was ethical to represent this particular offer as a Buyer’s Agent. I didn’t even know there was such a thing AS a Buyer’s Agent for boats, but Ian gave me a quick run down.Note: If you’re looking for a boat, you can hire a boat broker as a Buyer’s Agent and they’ll help you find the particular boat you’re looking for. And the commission for the final sale is paid for by the seller. In this case the boat Listing Agent, and the Buyers Agent split the commission. which is paid for by the Seller.The great thing is Ian volunteered to help me with recommendations for Boat Surveying, and even recommended 3 separate surveys:a Hull Survey, a Rigging Survey, and even a Sailboat Engine Survey. I had thought you ‘just get a survey’!I was also told and referred to a Maritime Title Search / Documentation company. Super helpful advice!Ian is a massive help, and I can’t recommend IVT Yacht Sales & Cruising Yachts enough!!!THANKS for all the help Ian!!!
