I grew up just around the corner from this coffee shop and its always been my go-to spot for great coffee, light bites, and meeting up with folks when Im back in town. The owner is outstanding and really loves getting to know customers. Hes created a unique vibe with lots of different roasts and foods to pick from, plus its kid and family friendly. I highly recommend the Turkish roast, I always stock up on a couple pounds. But definitely ask what they are roasting when you visit, there is nothing like coffee beans fresh and hot off the roaster.

My favorite local coffee shop in south minneapolis! A true local gem- Sovereign Grounds has great tasting beans, especially the Turkish Roast. We come here often for breakfast on the weekends and always get the White chocolate raspberry scone and the quiche. I also love getting espresso and sparkling water in the afternoons. The environment is great for socializing, working, and studying. You have to check out this place!

When you picture the perfect neighborhood coffee shop, you are probably picturing Sovereign Grounds. This isnt your stand hipster spot with low lighting, modern furniture, and people on their Macs alone at every table. This is the kind of place that friends and neighbors meet to catch up and let their kids run around. The pastries and coffee are fantastic (try the rhubarb bars!) but the owner, Hakan, and his staff are what make this place great. I honestly cant imagine this neighborhood without Sovereign Grounds- its the best part of living in this area!

Wonderful little neighborhood coffee shop. They have well-made coffee drinks made to order and some great sandwiches and baked goods. I love everything here. The only downside to this place is that it always smells like bleach inside and gives me a migraine, so I have to order and eat outside. Other than that I wouldnt change a thing.

The vibe is meh. The air is stale and vibe is weird music. The workers went to the back once I was served which means this place is not good because they are not busy. I ordered a Macchiato and it was watery and they didnt ask me what I wanted in it or if I wanted dairy in it. Their pastries are chewy and stale. Do not order the infused lemon aide it is store bought and I saw the barista pour it in but its marketed like something home made. Like come on dude, people go to your coffee house for things they cant make at home. Worst coffee house in Minneapolis and it shows! Whoever gave this place 4-stars must come here to get coffee grounds or they are trying support their local coffee house....Please dont do that...it doesnt serve them if they dont have to provide quality! I had to keep it real so they do better for their customers! 4.7 for real people?

I was in the mood for a great cup of coffee. So I quickly found this place and oh boy was I excited. Parking was easy right out front. The idea struck me as a great concept. I cant wait to bring my kids after covid. Walking in I can always tell the quality of the coffee. The aroma was like walking into a crisp summer morning. I met the man who introduced himself and asked me how my day was going. Very important because he made you want to be here. Thats something corporate coffee shops wont do. I told him it was my first time and I was excited. He took me through his drip coffees and had them clearly labeled as to origin. Very important if you love coffee the way I do. He then asked me what I liked. See its hard ordering off a menu with so many options but taking a customer first approach was so great. He began making my coffee and quickly noticed I was eyeing up the baked goods. He introduced me to my options. Very importantly he knew exactly what was in each one. The coffee is amazing hands down one of the best cups Ive ever had. The baked goods are a dream come true in your mouth. If you want to experience the greatest coffee with a humble friends and family touch. I insist you give this place a try. You wont be disappointed. Oh and the price just incase your wondering was cheap compared to other small businesses coffee shops I attend.

Theyve got some good beans but I asked for a cappuccino and they gave me essentially a large latte? They didnt ask what size I wanted so I assumed it would be the standard size, but Im not sure in what world a cappuccino is ever 16oz so it was strange to say the least. In my experience cappuccinos have been one size only, 8-10oz depending on the shop. Lesson learned I guess.

Sovereign Grounds is a modern day Cheers, except that its open to all ages. Instead of pouring beers, Hakan pours coffee thats been roasted on-site, specialty drinks, and hot chocolates. And just because you dont belly up to a bar doesnt mean you dont get that personalized treatment Cheers patrons received. Hakan remembers customers by name and by order. He engages in thoughtful ways so that customers walk out of the shop feeling lighter, and brighter. Hakan and his whole crew give so much to this community. Forget Starbucks and Caribou. Dont get your beans from the grocery store either-- spend your time and money at Sovereign Grounds-- you will not be disappointed.

Have kids, have friends, like coffee, dont know where to meet because you minions take apart coffee displays? Worry no more. Grab your troop a table in the play area and then go order yourself some coffee. They have a big list of a variety of coffee drinks and an assortment of food for you and the kiddos. Tea drinkers like myself are at a disadvantage like most usual coffee places in the US but they do have a few offerings. Ordered a red tea latte (aka a rooibos latte) and it was very disappointing. I figured the lady made it wrong because of how watery it was. I felt bad because she mentioned how tired she was. A bit later another barista came and I asked him how they make them (I was previously a barista so I was curious). He was kind enough to make me another one. This one was better but still lacked the depth of flavors found in other rooibos lattes elsewhere. I dont want to give this place a lower rating just because of the drink. Its truly a God send for moms who have rambunctious kiddos that dont sit still when they want to talk to friends.

Seating is mostly at tables but there are a couple of large easy chairs near the (unlit) fireplace and a long, padded bench along one wall. The childrens play area is thoughtfully separated from the main area in a smaller room that has seating and tables for parents while the kids play with the toys on the floor.
