Minneapolis has a plague of coffee shops, one every few blocks, and with each person adopting theirs with a loyalty that we generally maintain for sports teams. The Boiler Room is mine, but only because its actually the best one. The house-made chai is an important reason why; the availability of a variety of tea and coffee blends given its size is another; the pricepoint is a third; their work with a steamer is a fourth. Theres several more reasons, but can be summarized otherwise as: not generally fancy but delicious, close-to-home, and affordable.Boiler Room for life.

I love Boiler Room, and think they have really done a stellar job of keeping their employees and customers safe in this time. I always see some cute dog or another when I get a coffee there, and love the art by local artists on the wall. Plus, this coffee shop is right on the 11 bus line, which is great in a pinch when youre in a rush to go to work and didnt have time to make your coffee at home!

Staff is consistently unfriendly, borderline rude. They charge $8 for a sandwich and even $3 for a small cup of cottage cheese, which is overpriced in my book. I used to like this place, but the baristas give off a negative vibe. I won’t be back.I’m editing my review to provide more specific info after reading a review Tankut Atuk wrote today. My “last straw” experience was yesterday (4/5) with what I assume are the same two power-tripping baristas, unless they’re all like that?I had been a semi-frequent customer here. I was in the area and came in to kill a bit of unexpected free time before my next client meeting. One of the baristas came over and informed me I’d have to leave if I wasn’t going to order anything. I was a bit surprised, but technically I was in the wrong - it’s a business and they had every right to ask me not to take up space, so I got up to leave vs. purchasing anything since it was time to go anyway.I went to use the bathroom on my way out however, and was informed by the other barista that, “If you aren’t going to purchase anything, then I can’t let you use the bathroom.” At this point I was completely taken aback. I can’t remember ever being denied acesss to a bathroom before in my adult life.Owner: if you’re looking to attract only arrogant hipsters and drive everyone else out, keep doing what you’re doing. Otherwise, find some friendly baristas who have customer service skills and ditch the ones with an aggressive attitude. I like to support small businesses, but Starbucks is doing it right with their more welcoming policy.

This place is right by my apartment so I go here often. I often work there for a couple hours to break up the day when I work from home. They also let well behaved dogs come up to the counter to order so its my favorite Sunday morning walking stop with my pup. Wrote my thesis here, so Im somewhat biased, but the atmosphere is cozy, inviting, and relaxed. The coffee is distinctly acidic and has a unique flavor not uncommon to other local cafes. They usually have basic muffins and sandwiches and whatnot although youre better off bringing your own sandwich if youre camping out. Nice, large bookshelf. Free WiFi. Clean and secluded bathrooms. Comfy couches. For a place to read and study this is an ideal location.

Best thing about living in Stevens Square. Great coffee, chai, scones, muffins, waffles, and oatmeal, and not too expensive - they also dont do the teeny 8-oz small thing like lots of the other indie coffe shops in town, the small size is still 12 oz. The staff is so friendly and they all have great taste in music. Theres always cool art by local artists on the walls. Open early and into the evening. Its the perfect neighborhood third place - ideal for getting work done, having a meeting, making a quick stop on the way to the bus, or just hanging out for an afternoon. Dog-friendly, unpretentious, and steadfastly hospitable.
