I love this place! What a wonderful alternative to REI. They started out as a final project for a business course at the University of Oregon. I’m so thankful that they established themselves within the Eugene outdoors community and beyond.They are very well-stocked with anything climbing. If they don’t have something in-store, they’ll make their best attempt to backorder it. You can then pick it up in-store. Awesome resource!

We tried to order 3 ropes from backcountrygear.com - was told they were backordered and would be placed in 2 weeks. This was a stretch as we needed the ropes ASAP. We stuck with this company. 2 weeks came and went and we followed up only to get a response that surprise! our order had been canceled with absolutely NO NOTIFICATION from Backcountry Gear. No email, no text, no phone call. If you are going to delay and then cancel, at least let us know so we can find a reputable and reliable retailer. What an absolute joke.

Placed an initial order for an in stock item that was on sale. It took them over a month to process the order due to an issue with their PayPal payment system. I was forced to use PayPal because they would not accept my credit card online. By the time the order was processed, the item was on back order. Their initial estimate for receiving a new shipment was incorrect, leaving me in limbo for roughly two months. I ultimately decided to cancel the order.Pretty disappointing online service from a company that I have purchased items from in person for the past 6 years. I would only recommend shopping with them if you can make it to their warehouse location in Eugene.

Ordered a pair of climbing shoes. When I came to pick them up everyone was super nice and they even suggested I try them on. Good thing because I ended up swapping the ones I ordered for a bigger size. Well, I get to the gym and the shoes really hurt. I brought them back to the store and the guys super nicely let me try on a larger size. They even asked Id I wanted to try a different shoe at the same price point. No one made me feel bad or like I was bothering them. Climbing in the larger size shoes today was incredible!!! Never would have happened with Backcountry. Officially my go to place for everything adventure!

Online purchase experience was above and beyond. I bought an inflatable item and was careful to open the shipping box it it arrived in. To my pleasant surprise, they had placed a piece of cardboard along the underside of the longer openings of the box so that I wouldn’t accidentally slice up the item I just purchased from BackCountry with my boxcutter. I have been a customer of Backcountry Gear for over 5 years now. I have always received my order and have always been able to get exactly the item I am looking for which isnt always carried by larger retailers. I have once had a stock error that an item listed as in stock was out of stock (I was ordering cordage by the foot an needed a continuous strand. Though they had enough in stock it was in two strands). James immediately reached out by phone and email to let me know the problem and offer a solution. Their customer service is fantastic. I cannot speak for anyone else but I have always had a wonderful experience buying climbing, mountaineering, and hiking gear from them online and getting it shipped across the country with no issues. Best of all, they are very competitively priced. The level of customer service has made them my first choice since I have no local retailers that carry the equipment I need. I have nothing but a gigantic thank you to BackcountryGear.com and highly recommend them.

Im amazed at how few people in Eugene know about this shop. All by itself its a great pro shop with super nice staff and excellent selection and always a decent clearance rack. My bias lean towards their excellent shoe selection, extensive climbing gear and selection of beautiful packs. But what realy takes it to the next level is that when you go to most pro shops, even an excellent pro shop in some little mountain town, its exactly that: its a little shop in a little town. But BackCoiuntry has all of the authenticity and specificity of a great mountain pro shop with the inventory of an online retailer, which is I keep forgetting their day job!

I asked for advice not only on gear, but climbing in general, and the staff where very enthusiastic about helping. They also gave great service helping me exchange a piece of gear most companies probably would not have taken back.For those who have issues with the pricing, or shipping time. I ordered a Barryvox Package Light two weeks ago. I finally got a chance to unbox the item and prepare to use them this weekend. To my surprise, the item turned out to be a used/open box one.The package is damaged and the seal is apparently retaped together.There is dust and lint all over the beacon. The three free AAA batteries for the beacon is unpacked and scattered all over the packaging. The shovel is rusted and has a lot of scuff on it. I cannot believe what I see when I unpack it...Ive take pictures and documented all these... Ill never buy on this website ever again.

Went in to look for some entry level climbing shoes. The staff was helpful in finding a selection of shoes in my price range and were not overbearing in the least which I find to often be the case at other stores. They were all very friendly and helpful and I found exactly what I was looking for. They have an incredible selection of climbing shoes if youre ever in the market. I cant recommend this place enough.

Dont waste your time with this company. I ordered a backpack for my wife’s birthday a month ahead of our scheduled trip. Their website states 7-10 days to ship and I should receive it 2-4 days after that. After the 14 days had gone by and receiving no shipping email I contacted Luke from customer service. He said it should ship later this week. So next week having again not received an email I called and spoke with James. He told me that it should be arriving this week and shipping to you by next week. Then 2 days later he emails me saying that there was a problem with shipping and that it would arrive next week... so 7 days later I call James again. Still no info and I am told it will ship later this week. It has now been a month since I placed my order, I have canceled our trip, my wife’s present will be 2 weeks late and I still have no shipping notification. Long story short, this company does not care about customers. Their are a ton of outdoor companies that will not run you in circles and will provide good customer service. This is not one of them. After asking several times if I should cancel my order and go with another company to ensure I receive my pack on time I was continually reassured that that wasn’t necessary... until it was too late. It’s not worth saving 50$ to get screwed.

Great customer service.I’ve only done business with them online. I asked about a back ordered item on the chat feature and was given an ETA of when the item would be in stock. I ordered my item and a few days later, got an email explaining that my item was back ordered and given an ETA of when it was shipped. They promptly answered all of my other questions. I’m very impressed with the customer service and the communication they have with customers. The item was received when expected as expected.

They have a ton of climbing bolting hardware available on the website- sometimes this stuff can be hard to find. There was a small issue with my recent order, only half of it came. I called and spoke to Jeff who was probably the most helpful sales associate Ive ever spoken to on the phone. It was nice to chit chat, and he made sure the other half of my order was overnighted no problem. I will certainly be ordering from them again. Keep rocking it guys!

Ordered some snowshoes, best price I could find. They wrote me the next day and said they were out of stock and expected it in 1 week. Exactly 1 week from the date of that communication, I received a ship notice from their store and the very next day got my package. Great service, great communication and in this case followed up with getting me what I needed as promised.

Backcountrygear is a gem for all outside must haves for Eugene area recreation and world expeditions.Our REI falls short for most real climbers. I moved here trying to climb ice coming from Minnesota , and Rei here is more for buying socks . I used to have to mail order from Mountain Gear in Spokane. Having backcountrygear is in my backyard has changed the game. I would never order anything from GreatcountryGear ever again. Even 1 star is too good for them. Their selection and priced seemed ok but their Customer Service is horrible at best. I contacted them regarding 2 issues I encountered with my order and they are nowhere to be found. They hide behind a chat thats terrible and so far I have received an email which does not account for took place with my order. They should treat their customers better or they will have no customers if they keep it up. And I had the most strange exchange with a supervisor at Customer Support.

If you have the opportunity to swing in I highly recommend it! Local business, they often have good deals, and have a large selection (though not always on the floor). Great alternative to REI.

Even though I dont live in Eugene I pass through there somewhat regularly and Backcountrygear has become my local climbing shop due to its awesomeness. There selection is massive (their entire warehouse is here) and the staff are very knowledgeable, friendly, and experienced. I love having an excuse to swing by and pick up something as I love hanging out and talking with the people who work there- gotten great advice on gear and local climbing spots. Love this place!

The dudes were super friendly and helped us try on climb shoes even though we are annoying and asked for 30 different sizes in 30 different shoes (WHICH THEY HAD BECAUSE THEIR SELECTION IS AWESOME). Then they helped us figure out which quick draws were the best deal and even gave us an extra discount. Basically, I left the store thinking, Man, I should write them a good review on Google!

Not great customer service. Went in looking for shoes, no greeting, stood there for about 5 minutes, not a word from the people working there. To be honest, I basically visit yearly for their clearance sale, but that is good.Its a more focused collection of equipment than someplace like REI. They are focused on light weight, backpacking, and climbing. If thats what youre looking for, look here.

Paid extra for USPS 2-3 day estimated shipping. Took 8 days for item to arrive. Asked for a refund on the shipping. Was told no by BCG as it was only estimated shipping time and BCG knows that USPS could be slower during the holidays. So BCG is flat out lying on their website about shipping times. 3-5 days I wouldnt be complaining. But when paying extra for faster shipping and its just as slow (or slower) than standard free shipping - ridiculous. And then they wont even refund the extra for shipping - terrible service.Edit: After sending a 2nd complaint email backcountry gear did refund the shipping charges. Upgrading to 2 stars from 1.

Dont let the small space fool you. Ask them if you are looking for something you dont see in store, as their warehouse for the website is in the same building. They have a huge stock! On top of that they sell brands that actually care about quality instead of being bought out by Columbia and Northface.

Best gear place in the NW by far, but be aware the retail store is small but they can get you anything from the warehouse, just ask! Cant say enough good things about this place

I had a great customer experience today. Came in looking for a steripen pre filter, something that 2 other stores didnt have and they had a good stock of two options. I was taken care of extremely well and the staff there was knowledgeable and experienced even though I had a hard time explaining what I was looking for. Its a small shop but stocked appropriately with plenty of back stock so ask them for what you need because there is a good chance its in the back.I think the big thing for me is while they cater exclusively to the backcountry climber and hiker crowd they certainly did not make me feel out of place for my chosen outdoor pursuit.Great shop, great employees. Ill go here for all my backcountry needs outside of the hunting/ fishing recreational retailers.

Used gear must be returned within 30 days of delivery for store credit.I called to let them know I would be returning the shoes & was told I would get the full refund. When I checked my bank my refund was $6.99 less. When I contacted them they stated they had the option to withhold $6.99 for returns.

I absolutely love the product that is available in the backcountry gear store and there store online as well. They have quality items, this is a place where you go to get the best hiking, camping and rock climbing gear. My husband and I have been ordering/buying from backcountry gear since 2012 when my husband went to hike the Appalachian trail. We have never had any issues with ordering. There store staff is very friendly and informed. We are definitely loyal customers to this place.

Everything works fine unless youre shopping online!!it sucks, one of the main features online customers base their decisions on is delivery date. Not delivered as expected, no estimated delivery coming from oregon to utah! prices are good, good gear as other stores, but shipping not good.

I am a Eugene local, and I have been buying from BackcountryGear since the early 2000’s when they were over off Madison St. Their employees have always been very knowledgeable, and they have the best selection of technical outdoor equipment in the Northwest. I’ve never had a bad experience here in all my years. And all my friends who have been introduced to Backcountry Gear absolutely love the place.When I was climbing in the early 2000’s this was the place to pickup pro for your climbing rack. Today their climbing selection is even bigger. They have absolutely the biggest selection of climbing gear I have ever seen—anywhere.Now that my outdoor pursuits are much more down to earth, they have a considerable selection of technical and causal outdoor clothing, camping, backpacking, and hiking gear. Backcountry Gear has an excellent selection of packs. They helped my friends pick out some great packs, and they did a great job of fitting their packs too.Backcountry Gear has great deals and specials, and they are a must see if you are passing through Eugene. They are great resource for beginners and experts alike, so do not be intimidated.I see some negative reviews, and some of these might be outliers. They may be small, but they have an excellent selection thanks to their warehouse, plus they offer plenty of expertise and excellent service.

Wow I was really impressed with the selection and low prices Backcountry Gear had. Would highly recommend stopping by if you ever need some tips from an experienced and knowledgable staff.

They had some great deals on hiking boots. The pair I got felt great in the store, but when I tested them on the trail, they hurt my feet. The rep had said I could take them on a short outdoor test, which I had done, and true to their word, they accepted them for refund.

One of the employees (Jon) spent over an hour walking me through different types of alpine and climbing harnesses, and let me try a bunch on. Super helpful, didnt feel rushed or intimidated, and the sale prices are great. Gear shops should feel like this.

They have lots of higher end items, and hard to find brands, theyre one of the few stores in our area that carry fjallraven gear. Theyll be one of my go to places to buy high-quality stuff. My go to store is REI, but Ill start shopping here first.I always try to support local business. I bought my first Patagonia jacket here, the nano storm.
