They are the most professional, quick, and honest auto service center around.I was told a price over the phone which was way cheaper than anyone else.and they kept to it with no hidden fees etc..I also only had to leave my car with them for 5 hours or so while others told me it would be a day or two.They offer a free ride to bring you back home or pick you up which was really nice.Thank you for a really pleasant experience.My number one choice if I ever need any service done in the future.

They tricked my wife into services she didnt need.I happened to go pick my wifes care up for her. She said she was just getting basic service, so I was surprised the bill was $260.$260 for an oil change and cabin air filter replacement.Thats not right. Dont go here.And they even recommended that next time we replace the brakes on her new car.On top of all of this they had the audacity to ask me for a 5 star review. I am always extremely pleased with the quality of service and repair for my vehicles that I receive at Hillmuth. They are great at giving advice for long-term maintenance of my cars (model years 2011 and 1978!) and the car is fixed the first time! I especially really appreciate their loaner program too. First time experience was more than expected. They diagnosed the problem immediately and made all attempts to get the necessary parts timely. They stayed in contact with me through the whole process. They went line for line on how to resolve the issues and broke down all paperwork so I knew what they would do now and what I would need done in the future. NO CHARGE!!!My battery died on Sunday. Called road service to come out and charge. On Monday battery dead. Called Hilmuth. Sent out their driver and technician. They were able to start the car and technician drove my car to their shop to put on slow charge. I had a wiper motor issue that had to first be researched/identified as to what was wrong. Hillmuth figured out the issue - recommended that part and some other services - and still completed all the work in the same day. Plus having a loaner car so that my wife didnt have to leave work or I didnt have to wait there allowed me to get a lot of work done while the car was being worked on. Ive been a customer at the Columbia branch for decades. They do excellent work, provide exceptional customer service, and put in extra effort. Theyve helped me squeeze the last mile out of a couple of cars. In one instance, when the catalytic converter failed on a relatively new car, they interceded with the manufacturer to pay for the cost. Later, a recall was issued for that particular car/catalytic converter. They saved me lots of money. I highly recommend them.

I had purchased a vehicle over the weekend in VA and needed a MD state inspection ASAP. I called Hillmuth Monday morning as a new customer and after listening to my situation, they were able to work it out and fit me into their busy schedule. The inspection was thorough (a lot more than what the dealer checked in VA) and the people there could not have been nicer! Im new to the area so Im glad I found a trusting place to take my car to going forward. By the number of cars that came in during the time I was there, I think others feel the same way. This one gentleman walked in, handed over his keys, rattled off a list of issues he has with his car, and left -- as if with complete trust that Hillmuth will take care of everything.

Tire replacement and alignment. Tires sourced from Tire Rack. They do have Generals that would be ok but wanted better Continentals. Was going to the Clarksville shop. Both are great and fairly close. Columbia is a larger shop. Work is always as expected and first rate. They maintain any car work we have that isnt warranty service.

I called on a Friday morning urgently needing my front headlamp replaced. No simple task these days. Stan quoted me a price much more fair than the dealer and got it done before 3pm. Friendly, professional, sanitary...a true pleasure to deal with. I will be back!

When my brother stopped being a mechanic several years ago I needed a shop to go to, I chose Hillmuth because of the good reviews. The reviews were real and we have received nothing but good service from this shop, we took our car there again last Thursday for over heating, and the repair was finished the next day. I have a 2003 Toyota truck with very high mileage on it. The radiator finally failed and I was towed to Hillmuth (Recommended by my insurance company). Hillmuth was diligent in obtaining replacement parts and evaluating potential other problems. Got me back on the road in quick turn around time.

My car over heated, I was recommended to get my car towed there, which worked since my roadside assistance will tow within 15mi. I got it towed there, and got the call of what was going on. Stated my radiator fan was done, the thermostat was done as well as the hose connected to it. Total job was gonna be done at 1800.. incredibly expensive. I paid the fee for them even investigating my car, and then paid to get it towed back to where I live. After sending a message to quite a few places, the quotes I received from others, even the car dealership I bought my car from was on the high side of 900. Also, decided to make sure what the problem was, was actually the problem. It was just the fan that needed to be replaced, found a certified part for 100 dollars and will be paying someone else to install it. Saved myself over 1300. If you are a female, do not go there. I do think in the automotive world girls are treated with way less respect and are constantly going to try and rip you off.

UPDATE 2, April 2021: The car was brought in originally for a oil change and leak, had gaskets and valve cover replaced. It sat for most of the pandemic so we didnt notice that the leak wasnt fixed. Took it to BA to get looked at and they immediately were able to diagnose the leaks ( clean the engine and do a leak test ) and shockingly its leaking from the repair job done at Hillmuth. Never Again.UPDATE: Since this review was entered the owner reached out to me in an effort to correct the issue, and has done so.Summary: Careless mistakes, not thorough, forgetting to inform of full quote.They forgot to inform me about ~$600 worth of work.The work and parts were on the initial quote, they just forgot to tell me about it. Twice they called back having a case of the “oops we forgots”This isn’t a case of them having found new issues during the course of the repair. If that were the case I would have 0 issues with this.First they forgot the diagnostic charge had to be added on. Fine. I’d already approved the work and assumed it had been in what I was quoted. Whatever.Then, they called to say they’d forgotten to inform me about the part they needed to order. They’d gotten me to approve the work / labor for the replacing of the part but somehow forgot to quote the actual part itself? Why would they quote work to replace a part without including the cost of the part?Careless mistakes that will prevent me from bringing any of my cars here again.They also quoted 1800 bucks for a brake job. On a golf. Absolutely exorbitant price there.After all was said and done they forgot to attach a hose and had they bothered to test drive the vehicle to confirm the problem was corrected they would have seen the check engine light that popped up basically as soon as we left.This review was prompted by a call from hillmuth, for a review. The man on the phone chose to argue with me about my vehicle rather than listen to my complaint. Good job.

I have owned a Hybrid car since the last Bush administration. After driving 1200 miles from my home around New Orleans, I learned a fun fact (the hard way) that at about year 15 the main hybrid batteries die and need to be replaced. I talked to the closest dealer and they wanted $12,000 to replace it. I knew I could do better. I found BestHybridBatteries.com and I could get a replacement for under $3K. Now all I needed was someone to take out the old one and install the new. After being laughed out of three shops, I called Hillmuth of Columbia. Scott was a godsend. I had to get the not-so-light battery shipped directly to them, which they accepted and called me to confirm the arrival. A few days later, with tow truck phone numbers in hand, I bravely made the 2 hour voyage to the shop. When they were replacing the battery, they noticed a few things that needed attention, gave me a reasonable estimate, and fixed it right then and there. They even offered lunch recommendations! Honestly, most shops I’ve visited can and do exploit customer desperation. NOT Hillmuth. With fair pricing and agreeable staff, this is the place any and every traveler should bring their vehicle. Always friendly, clean, professional. Brought vehicle in for MD inspection. Work needed was assessed at $2000 (exhaust system). Brought car to Korean mechanic in Ellicott City (who used to be an inspection station). He fixed the main part of the problem for $200. Am not doubting that the more thorough repair recommended by Hillmuth would have been superior. Perhaps they could have offered the more basic repair needed to pass inspection as well. To their credit, Hillmuth gave the inspection certificate based on the other shops work.

The main area is clean and the guys there are professionals and yet personal! They have worked on both of my vehicles and have doe a great and honest job!!!! Will continue to bring my vehicles here!! So helpful that they have their own loaners to give and the work is done so quickly!!

About a year ago, our front fan was making noise. I tried taking it back to CarMax, but they were booked - I used their find a repair service, and Hillmuth came up. What I liked - easy to talk to, convenient location. Why the 3 stars - they said the part was hard to get, no Nissan dealer had it in stock, and the part alone was going to cost $900 (it was under warranty).Okay, but then they tried to upsell me on a complete brake replacement, including all new rotors, which came to a staggering $1800 out of my pocket. The car had 25K on it, and I had just purchased it from CarMax a few months earlier. I went over to Ourisman Nissan, who had a good laugh over the repair - total repair with P&L was way less than $900 - and didnt try to upsell.I know this sounds really specific and youre probably thinking this wont happen to you - youre probably right. Every customer is different, and Hillmuth isnt a bad place. What I find is that Hillmuth is better for general repairs that dont require hard-to-get parts. Do some googling first - if the problem seems car-specific (many Nissan front left fans fail in the first 30K miles, for instance) and if you have a dealership nearby that you trust, use the dealership first. Otherwise, with Hillmuth and really every other independent garage, assess the state of your car first to avoid the upsell - do you know you need brakes, vs. do you think the brakes are fine?
