Dr. Jon is one of the most professional guitar repair techs in Austin that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and working with. Always fast response time, quality work, reasonable turnaround time and amazing, affordable pricing. Couldnt ask for a better repair tech.

Andrew did great work on my guitar. I brought it in for him to look at and decide if it needed a refret or just a fret level, and to also have a setup done on it. Andrew explained the process and detailed the reasons why it needed new frets. He got the job done quickly and the guitar now plays so well - its like night and day from how it was before!

I’m so glad I connected with South Austin Guitar Repair. I had a couple of reclamation projects that I was stuck on and he was able to quickly diagnose the issues and get both of these instruments into game shape. Andrew knows his stuff, is super efficient and does great work at more than fair rates. I just dropped off another for a setup, and I’ll be taking all my guitars to Andrew in the future.

Possibly the worst experience I have had with a workshop. I asked Andrew if he could perform a push/pull pot repair on my most valued guitar to which he agreed he could do the job. Plus some other typical guitar set up adjustments. He warned there would be a delay in the job because he was backlogged with some other guitar repairs, which I didnt mind given the great reviews I saw online. Here is where the issues began, if you value communication with a business that is supposed to be giving you good service look elsewhere. Andrew was pretty much non responsive during the repair process which lasted for about one week and the few times he responded to some of my questions he did so in a very unprofessional manner. When he finally decided to reply to my messages was for him to tell me what we both knew, which was that the volume knob needed replacing, he said that(luckily) he had a 25k push/pull pot and that he was going to swap it right there and then along with a picture of the new piece he was going to replace. An hour later he sent me a text with a total to pay for the service in which he lists some forms of payment, including PayPal. I replied stating I would pay with PayPal as well with some other questions about the guitar ( I am trying to get more educated on some other aspects of my guitar.) By this point I had already asked him several questions that he would just ignore. One day goes by without him responding, so I decided to send him another text asking him to send me the invoice to my email, that way I could pick up my guitar that day. He responds to me stating he will get it to me in an hour to which he did and I paid the invoice through his online portal. Which he QUICKLY responded to me asking if I could cancel that payment and pay through PayPal because he did not have set up that online portal. Which I then stated to him I told you I was going to pay through PayPal and you never responded to me until today. He then said he would give me a discount for his mistake plus for the inconvenience he had me go through calling my bank and having them stop that payment. I finally pick up my valued guitar , in a very social distancing manner and went home. Upon finally being able to play my guitar I noticed that the volume knob was still somewhat wobbling despite the fact he had replaced that piece. ( This is one of the things I emphasized when I explained to him what was going on with the guitar besides the broken volume knob.) Moreover, I noticed that the pick ups had a weak output and definitely sounded different than when I dropped it off for repair. I dont know if this is because he used a cheap / incompatible aftermarket potentiometer or if he did something wrong that messed up the wiring which is causing the weak sound when I play. To be extra sure of what was happening I compared my valued guitar to another guitar that has the same pick ups and lo and behold, the repaired guitar was outputting less DB ( I even checked this sonically on my DAW.)Overall, a very bad experience. I didnt want to contact him either way because I knew he would not respond to me with a good attitude or given a response at all. Which is why I preferred to warn other future customers from this unprofessional repair shop.On a finishing note, this is not the most expensive repair shop but definitely not cheap considering the quality of service you receive.

I’m a beginner learning how to play electric guitar. I bought a brand new one recently and was told by a friend to have it professionally set up. I took it to Andrew, who after looking at it for a few minutes told me the guitar looked great and didn’t really need any work. While others would have taken my money and “worked” on a guitar that didn’t need anything done, he was honest and straightforward. I would highly recommend him just based on his honesty and transparency.

Andrew reset a pulled bridge on acoustic Ferringron bass that has tremendous sentimental value although structurally a POS. His work was immaculate, he replaced strings, battery, and otherwise went well beyond what I expected to make sure the result was better than I thought possible. My only regret is that it took me a few months to review. Now I can scare my dog again and relive the golden age of glorious, flowing locks!Almost forgot to mention, came back sooner than promised. Thanks again.

A+ experience with reasonable pricing and great communication along the way. Repaired an old neck on my Tele that had seen better days, and did a bang up job setting it up. I cant put this thing down since I got it back. I even got it back quicker than I expected. Will definitely be coming back with more guitars soon.

Highly recommend this place, especially if you need delicate work done on things like Floyd Rose-outfitted guitars. Cost of service is very fair and the work will be done quickly. I even brought in multiple guitars for this guy right before the holidays and they were ready in less than a week. Very cool!

Andrew was very professional, very cheap, and very prompt. This was my first experience getting my guitar repaired, and he has earned any future business I may require. What I most appreciated was his approachable demeanor. Im still new to guitar and wasnt always sure what my guitar needed, but he never made me feel dumb for asking questions or exploited my ignorance to make a cheap buck. Highly recommend!

I recently had guitar done by Andrew at South Austin Guitar Repair. I am a professional musician who travels around Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana weekly performing 3 to 4 nights a week. I emailed Andrew about my Gibson LP Custom, needed a bridge replacement, and a set up. Andrew responded the next morning, was very interested in helping, and we met the following day to give him the guitar. Very nice guy, talked for a good second, and i asked if it was possible to have the guitar ready the next day as i needed to depart for gigs. Andrew called me that very evening and asked for details of my preference in guitar action, removing string buzz, etc. I met with Andrew the following morning with my guitar ready. I was seriously amazed how fast he was able to do this and get it back to me.* He explained all that he did, and if i needed any adjustments, that he would tend to them quickly and immediately. I played my guitar for 2 gigs this week. My guitar has never felt so good, the action was perfect, the intonation was perfect, and the adjustment he did to the nut of the guitar was excellent. Andrew is now my permanent guitar go to guy. Excellent pricing, great guy, great attitude, perfect work.***The reason i say i was amazed how fast his guitar work was done, is because as i have also had guitar and amp work done at Austin Vintage Guitar. Not that they do not have good work done, but i recently took my Super Sonic there for a retube and bias. it has now been 3 weeks and they still havent even called about an invoice. I have had a set up done there before, and it took a week to get my guitar back, it was way more expensive than Andrew, and i had to go back because i wasnt satisfied with the work.Anyone residing in Austin. Andrew is your guy. His work is fantastic. Ive never been so happy and comfortable with my Guitars Playing.Thank You Andrew.JulianProfessional Musician,Wedding Performer, Event Performer.Cover Bands - Top 40, Rock, Ozzy Tribute.

I have a pretty rare Lyle “Trini Lopez” copy, circa late 1960s (Matsumoku Factory). It sat in a case unplayed all these decades. It had some issues from its inception, mainly, the tailpiece was off center and the hole needed to be plugged with a dowel and re-drilled. Also the radius of the bridge did not match the neck. Andrew went through everything: tailpiece, bridge, frets (new frets and crown), nut. Now it all lines up, and the radius of ALL of the above components match, and it now plays like a dream. He also cleaned up the electronics. I am very pleased with Andrew’s work and his fees are fair and in line with the market of quality luthiers nationwide. Plus he taught me some interesting history of the Matsumoku Factory! If you want a top drawer luthier, take your instrument to Andrew. That’s my plan!

I wasnt sure if I should review Andrew, but since Ive been told that it is part of my consumer duty to report a poorly done job, I decided to do so...Long story short, I brought my brand new guitar to Andrew to have a button strap installed and he caused the neck to crack. No need to say, I was heart broken and upset.I am not going to bad mouth Andrew as he did apologize and offered to repair his mistake. Unfortunately it was too hard for me to trust him again. I asked for him to pay the repair bill from another shop which he did. On a side note, he was ready to get me a new guitar if I wanted to, but it was too late, I already established a relationship with my guitar...All that said, Andrew is very friendly and I am sure he is a very professional worker. Perhaps this experience will make him be more cautious next time he works on a small job.I am not sure what exactly caused the neck to crack, but according to many other opinions** I collected, the pilot hole was smaller than the screw. No comments...I was concerned that in few years the crack would grow bigger but luckily it was running 45 degrees against the grain of the wood.I did want to give him the benefit of doubt and an excuse on why he failed at installing the button. Perhaps I rushed him***?? Well thats not an excuse. He said that he did drill a pilot hole before screwing the screw. Rush or no rush, a pilot hole is the way to do it. So I concluded that the hole was too small. Come on!!! Yes cracks happen (quote from Andrew), when the job is not well done!! I would rather say: MISTAKES happen...I will attach a picture of the neck of my Seagull on Yelp. The 2 stars are for the fact that he was friendly and good looking (lol - so irrelevant)...**Within few days I visited and talked to many guitar repair businesses and professionals: South Austin Music, Austin Guitar House, Guitar Center, Strait Music, Nantel and Baron guitars in Montreal where I am from, Chris Primeau my guitar teacher, Music Exchange. The last one is the business I decided to go with for my Seagull. Alex and Marshall at Music Exchange were super friendly and helpful. They ended up covering the hole and polishing it. Now the scar is still showing, but it is contained. I am pleased with the service they offered. I also left my Gretsch there for a tune-up.***My kids were napping in the car so I stayed outside his apartment to be by the car. The job took less than 5 minutes.

Im new in town and needed a set up, as I had gone to heavier gauge strings. I took my Gretsch to South Austin Guitar Repair and when I got it back, the action was uncomfortably high and there was fret buzz all over the place. My gut instinct told me that this guy was unprofessional when I found out he worked out of his apartment...on top of that, when I asked for a receipt he looked surprised and ended up making one out with a magic marker and a blank piece of printer paper. Out of respect to independent business people, I gave this guy the benefit of the doubt and he failed miserably. So now Ill be taking my guitar to Austin Vintage Guitar (an actual shop off of Burnet and Twin Oaks Drive) to have my guitar serviced by licensed professionals. If youre a beginner and need someone to tune your guitar for you, then Id say youd be safe going to Andrew at South Austin Guitar Repair, but if youre an intermediate to professional guitar player, dont waste your time or money on this guy.
