Awesome BLACK OWNED BOOKSTORE. Excellent customer service. I asked for recommendations and was given two. I took that and purchased both. Ready for my next visit.

I checked out this store in person at the National Harbor. The store was beautiful, clean, and well-stocked. I will definitely shop there in-person again. As I like to support black-owned businesses, I am sad to see from the other reviews that their online ordering may not be the greatest system right now. But if you are local and enjoy paper books like me, I recommend them.

My Mahogany Books experience was GREAT! Awesome customer service and sooooooo many books to choose from. My daughter and niece who are teens said they want to go back. I will take the trip from VA bs ordering online.

When I travel I like to find Black-Owned businesses when I can. I cant wait to go back to DC. The selection of books I wanted to purchase them all when I was there in January 2020.

I absolutely love this book store. I was on my way to the cvs, walked past the store and something just told me to go inside and thank God that I did. I ended up purchasing 4 books and plan to visit again soon.

This place is a scam. I ordered two books from them eight months ago and received various generic emails that they were experiencing delays and theyd be here as soon as possible. After not receiving my books eight months later, I reached out and received an incredibly unapologetic response claiming the post office lost my books and theyre not liable for that. They would not even provide proof that the books had actually been sent leading me to believe they pocketed the cash and just completely forgot about my order.STAY AWAY from this place and choose any other small business book store to support - they clearly do not care about their customers.

The trip to DC was absolutely worth it because of this cute little bookstore.

My Daughter visited this store a weeks ago with her Aunt and she Loved it! We plan on visiting again very soon!

I ordered several books for myself and my family before it was “trending “ to patronize a black owned bookstore earlier this year. Most of the order arrived very quickly. The other portions arrived later and they they kept me updated during the process. I love their virtual book meet and greets with the authors! Overall I will continue to purchase from them and I have already told several of my friends and family members about their great customer service!

Ordered four books online. Communication between me and the store was great! They are doing an awesome job at fulfilling their orders under current circumstances. I did have to wait an additional week or so to receive my full order (and I did!) but I honestly don’t mind waiting as long as it takes. At this point in time, it’s about supporting local businesses and keeping them afloat.

I was sent a giftcard to support the business which was great. I ordered 3 books with that gift plus a little more. It took weeks to ship and as of this review it has been over 4 months with my third book never shipping. I emailed the store multiple times and have tried calling but still havent been in contact with them.

Im do not live in nor near DC so have not had the opportunity to visit the brick and mortar store. I am ordering online and have had a wonderful experience. They were extremely communicative when processing my order as they have received an unprecedented number of orders. I will definitely order from Mahogany Books again!

I actually, heard the story about Mahoney Books on NBC News. Very intriguing voice about “Black Books” the owners were very knowledgeable of books etc... I truly want to take my four grandchildren and myself to the book story this year. Very please!

Much like other customers that found Mahogany Books in 2020, I knew that ordering online during quarantine would require a grace period and patience. However, I ordered one book (The Hate U Give) back in June 2020 and was told months later that the order was being processed. Months after that (now November 2020), they emailed to see my order shipped. However, my book never arrived. I was disappointed, as I wanted to support small, black-owned businesses. Multiple emails and messages on the website have been ignored. I have not received a refund, and my bank refuses to help either. I hate to sound like a Karen here, but this kind of behavior is unacceptable and I will never buy from this business again.

This rating should be 0. IF ordered 2 Books In June 2020 and Ive only received one book. As of August I tried to follow up on the status of my second book and I still havent received a response. Initially I was going to order over a $100.00 in books, but since this was my first experience with Mahogany Books I wanted to make sure it was seamless. Im so glad I only ordered two books, because clearly it would have been a nightmare. My next recourse us to contact my financial provider to see if I can reverse the charges for the second book.

Did Not Receive Full Order. Last month I ordered four books but only received three. Over the past several years Ive been trying to buy from worthy small businesses around the country instead of Amazon. I know Ill pay a bit more but I like doing my part to help Mom & Pop stores. Unfortunately I didnt receive the full order. And one of the books was slightly damaged too. Ive tried contacting them but to no avail. And there was no message in the initial shipment that it would be coming at a later date. If I get the last book Ill probably change my rating.

I ordered a book from them in earlier this summer and since they have been swamped with orders they have been so nice to send out emails updating the customers on the status of their order. I really appreciate being kept up to date on what’s going on as well as it really shows how much they care about their customers. I highly recommend buying books from this store. Ive still sadly never been to MahoganyBooks in person but I love shopping online with them. Ive bought several books from them over the years and even sent as gifts to friends as well. Great online store and selection of books with easy to navigate site and easy ordering process. Wonderful customer service with frequent updates. Every book Ive received so far has been in perfect new condition and exactly what Ive ordered. I live in central Virginia and I am looking forward to going to the brick and mortar location on my next visit to DC!

I ordered three books off of the website in June. I received one of them in July and knew that they had been backed up with the influx of orders. They updated my order on October 20 with new tracking numbers for the two books I had yet to receive- the tracking number does not work and it just says label created, not yet in system.I first sent a message in September and sent multiple emails, but did not receive a response until December 1. I was told they would look into the matter and help locate my order. They then told me that it was no longer their responsibility once the post office had the package and that I needed to file a claim for lost mail, which I did. The post office says they never received the package. I relayed this to customer service and they said that since my package wasn’t insured there was nothing they could do and that all I could do was reorder and pay for the books again. This is appalling customer service and they will never receive my business again.

Great store and great selection but I dont recommend placing orders online. Ive had success with one order, another order with an item missing. The store is very difficult to get in contact with over email or phone. Ive seen on their Instagram many others are having the same problem (my own comments got deleted when asking about my order on their Instagram). Im sure they are overwhelmed with the impacts of COVID, but their online orders not reliable. Better to call (if you can reach them) and pick up in person.

Its hard to find Black Owned Bookstores in DC, made more difficult east of the Anacostia. I love Mahogany Books for their commitment to carrying local and national works, focusing on books that offer representation for a wide range if groups, and the staff are friendly. Its not a huge store, but the energy and service is there. Thats key to me.

I made a purchase online with Mahogany Books at a time when many people were seeking out Black-owned businesses to support. After receiving a large influx of orders from around the country, there were understandably some delays in shipping. Mahogany Books went above and beyond in communicating order statuses along the way. Their emails were so personal and thoughtful, and I was thrilled when my books arrived. Even though I live across the country and may never get a chance to visit their store in person, they fostered the sense of community and relationship that makes small, locally-owned businesses so wonderful. Great family-owned bookstore! I enjoy receiving updates and emails from the Mahogany Books Family, they are so personable and thoughtful. Even during COVID-19 the team is very responsive and informative, my book was delayed so I gave them a call and found out it was a USPS issue not a fulfillment issue.

I ordered a popular book around the time Mahogany Books was slammed with orders. They did a great job keeping me updated on the status of my order. I understand theyve received some negative reviews due to back-orders and issues with their system deleting emails; they simply werent set up for the influx of orders from what they said. I wish people would be more patient and give them time to adjust to the increase in their business. I did receive my book about a week ago. I ordered it June 13th, so I had it in less than a month.

Easy online ordering with a great selection and recommendations/featured books and book lists. They seem to have been inundated recently, and their email communication has been excellent with periodic, heartfelt email updates. Looking forward to getting my order after a reprint/backorder.

Walking into MahoganyBooks is like walking into your favorite aunties home. The smell, the music and the staff are welcoming. The books seem to call out to you from the shelves. The pictures of current and deceased African American authors is humbling and makes you feel like you fit right in, like you belong there. I love MahoganyBooks! I am a customer for life!

I have been trying for some time to reach someone regarding return of my order and have yet to be contacted. When you call either the voicemail is full or it says they are closed due to covid. You send emails and don’t get a response . I know they have been overwhelmed by orders and support but they need better customer service. Just want to get some help for my return and refund.

Hubby and I have been meaning to stop by and so glad we did tonight. What a wonderful, intimate community book shop. We left with a bag full of books that Christy, a really nice employee, helped us find for ourselves and a new speculative fiction book by Nnedi Orakorafor book for our school aged son. Highly recommend this community gem. Can’t wait to go back soon! We also got to check out great art installations within and next to the the Anacostia arts center and did some clothes shopping next door.

They were flooded with orders during covid because of being promoted on social media as a great Black-owned book store. I cant imagine the stress of having to scale up so quickly during a global pandemic. They sent out several updates and apologized for orders taking longer than usual. The updates were exceptionally kind and professional and made me happy that I bought from them!! I got my order and dont mind waiting a little longer in exchange for supporting a small business.

It’s always eye-opening to experience books from authors from diverse backgrounds, and I appreciate how people of color are at the core of this business - not an afterthought. I just walked away disgusted from the store. I went there to buy Eddie Glaude’s “Begin Again “ book. The door was locked and a gentleman who was having a conversation on the phone kept on signaling me to wait. After three to five minutes of waiting I walked away. Incidentally, there were at least two other people in the store who did not appear to be customers.I’m a seventy one year old man who traveled from the Ivy City section of the city to patronize this store. I wanted to buy the book from a Black owned store instead of ordering it from Amazon. This disappointment will not keep from from seeking out another Black owned store to purchase this and other books.

Black Owned and Absolutely Excellent!! Everything from the Greeting to the Thank you. The books are plentiful and the kindness of the young lady working made my visit more than wonderful. She was knowledgeable and pleasant. With so many great choices I cant wait to return! If you are In need of a new book or a gift, Mahogany Books is your go to. Its located in the Anacostia Community Space with a host of other businesses that are just as fabulous. So go and be prepared to spend a little time enjoying the space, and grab a bite at Everlasting Life you will be glad you did!

Nice selection but it is probably better to go in person because the online ordering process is a nightmare. I ordered one book on 6/4/20 online and have still not received it. I emailed to update my address and emailed to inquire about the status of the book and got no response. I finally called on 7/7/20 and I was told my order was kicked out of the system due to my address and they didn’t see my email. I was told my order was updated but still haven’t received my order.
