Walker Machine & Foundry Corporation should not back off after years of providing jobs to the Roanoke valley for almost a century. Sorry that the poster Ulltron feels this is not caring for the community. The Walker Foundry has been part of the citys boom time and deserves some respect. Check out the image of Bethlehem Steels abandoned brown field site (btw, taxpayers foot the bill usually 80% while investors walk away with dividends) which is now lovingly referred to as The Stacks that shares green space and serves as backdrop to fun community events, business opportunities, and concerts. This situation is a little different, but perhaps NOT so different. The greenway could still function as a greenway and the Owner could maintain his investment in something held for over a century. Roanoke City leadership still has problems appreciating private businesses and local talent to rediscover solutions that work across the board...they keep deals in-house and in that protected bubble. I would really like to see the truth behind this eminent domain card the City is willing to pull out of their pocket. Eminent domain was supposed to be used only in the interest of safety (a building about to collapse and Owner incapable of repairs or sale) or for larger progress such as vacant parcels partnered with a need to build a school, build an interstate, etc. Moreover, its a good chance that this eminent domain would mean, you the taxpayers, would not only pay for the legal and land acquisition, but paying for the site clean while forcing a hard-working private citizen out of something he has paid taxes on, insured, maintained, etc. for all of these years - while providing jobs! And yes, the Authorities Having Jurisdiction turned a blind eye to pollutants, etc especially during the heydays as they collected the hefty tax monies from the Foundry. Its a shame Walker Foundry is being treated this way now. I love the greenway and use it to bike and walk and I like being reminded about the history of what made this city of any significance. Using eminent domain for a greenway is just bad business. We would not have greenways or businesses if we only had government employees running the show. The great cities of the world see great leaps and bounds because of fruitful partnerships and those original brave thinkers. Work around it and quit wasting taxpayer money already!
