While browsing Yelp for dinner options last night, she came across 22 Below as a recommendation during a completely unrelated search. After dining at another restaurant, she mentioned wanting to check this place out, but couldnt remember the name; only that it had a number in the name. I queried ice cream in Yelp, and couldnt find it in the first 100 entries, but then, like her, stumbled upon it on a completely separate search. Weird. You can do better, Yelp!Technical difficulties aside, we did find it, and drove into downtown to check it out. Im not a fan of ice cream, so I let my wife take the reins. We walked in, thinking it was closed at first, as its seemed empty, but soon spotted one customer tucked away ahead of us, waiting for his order, but initially, no sign of any employees. One emerged from the back shortly after our entry, though, but didnt acknowledge our existence for a couple minutes. They werent particularly engaging, friendly or helpful when they did, but eventually directed us to the digital ordering computer, where my wife requested a Banana Cream Pie. While waiting, I became intrigued by the Hot Cheetos ice cream option on the menu, which I definitely would have tried, had I not been full from dinner. Next time, Ill have to try it!22 Belows signature presentation method is rolled ice cream, which involves mixing and blending condensed milk and various toppings into a thin layer, spread across a frozen circular plate, and then scraped into rolled cylinders of ice cream goodness, similar in form factor to a Hostess Ho-Ho, placed in a bowl, and dressed in a variety of familiar toppings of your choice: candy pieces, chocolate chunks, marshmallow, nuts, whipped cream, cherries, etc. Think fro-yo, without the self service.22 Below also serves up Portlands most recent culinary fetish, bubble teas, as well as smoothies. Additionally, any of the rolled ice cream selections can be made into a milkshake, which is a nice, waistline expanding option! Some of the various teas available are cryptically named (and purely superficial), prompting me (a seasoned Japanophile) to inquire what the difference is between a Hokkaido Milk Tea and an Okinawa Milk Tea. For the curious, one is made with brown sugar, and the other...I already forgot. Honey, maybe? Guess Ill have to ask again next time.It took about 15 minutes for our ice cream to arrive in my wifes hands, due to a tug-o-war between our own order, the customers in front of us, and an apparent backlog of Grubhub (or similar online platform) orders. Nary a word was spoken to any of us while waiting, and even a Grubhub customer, whose order had been placed online before us, arrived to discover his order was incomplete, due to a mistake made by the staff. He ended up having to wait for the two in-store orders to be completed, and he seemed frustrated by it.However, all things were put to right once my wife was able to dig in. She remarked being in heaven, so Im thinking the final product was a win! Shame the customer service, dreary atmosphere and operational mismanagement put a damper on the experience, because the end result was spectacular. 22 Below has a unique and satisfying product, but its sub-zero customer service left us feeling cold-shouldered.Still, Ill probably still be back to try out that Hot Cheetos ice cream, out of morbid curiosity. Maybe the employees will have warmed up by then.
Itβs a great spot and have been coming here since it openedβ¦ but the last 5 times I have come here itβs taken 30+minutes to get my order. I love it but just takes too much time now. Youβd expect something amazing for a 30 minute wait but itβs just rolled ice cream at the end of the day. So sad but I need a new go to. Sorry 22 below, I will miss you guys :(
I have never been inside this place, but did stare through the window once. GPS FTW! The pictures of bubble tea on the window look great!
I usually have had good experiences except for today I have really bad anxiety so itβs really hard for me to speak up so when I order something itβs hard enough. Both of my friends got theirs in a timely manner itβs not like it was full it was empty I wouldβve definitely understood if the place was full but it was empty but they didnβt check all the tickets of orders they got and they completely forgot mine. If it werenβt for my friend who spoke up I wouldnβt have gotten mine. I was on the verge of a panic attack because itβs hard for me to speak up I just felt like it was very inconsiderate. They literally saw me waiting there panicking and they just went to the back and were having conversations which is really weird because they saw me order. Itβs just really upsetting and I feel like they couldβve been more professional instead of kicking around in the back room
Ive come here twice during work breaks for some ice cream on hot summer days, and I absolutely love it! First of all, its really cool seeing the process of how rolled ice cream is made. The workers do it so quickly and effortlessly! Second, they have some really interesting flavors and what Ive tried so far tastes fantastic. Ive had the Green Monster (matcha and oreo blend), as well as their Honey Lavender flavor. Ive already recommended this place to several people I know and I will keep coming back!
I think its a trend for my sons generation Z, but I wasnt impressed with quality or price and the store was not inviting. Bland walls, sticky floors with a giant, old pool table in the middle that Im assuming was a place holder for social distancing purposes. It had a lot of foot traffic and the teenagers/young adults running it worked hard so I tipped them well, but I expected more given its location in the Pearl District. My son will go back with his friends, but Id prefer Baskin & Robbins or Cold Stone any day.
A really cool experience for first timers! I live in North Portland and Iβve made trips just for this place! Sometime they donβt have things on the menu and itβs a little disappointing but I quickly forget when I order something else delicious!
Too sweet. No customization. And long waiting time (30 mins).
Delicious ice cream! Me and my boyfriend came for our first time and were thrilled to watch our ice cream be made in front of us! Huge variety of flavors to chose from like hot Cheetos to New York style cheese cake (my boyfriend got the NYC cheese cake kind sooo good!) Not your ordinary ice cream parlor! This is definitely a gem!
They are cool and have nice ice cream. Order from door dash for their best experience though.
Staff were super rude. We put a silly name for our order, not offensive or obnoxious, just a lighthearted joke and they were so unamused that they made us wait 45+ minutes for our ice cream. getting peoples orders out before ours, even though we had been waiting for such a long time. we heard them say βdo that order last.β itβs just a joke, itβs not that deep, and if you genuinely hate your job so much maybe find somewhere else to work instead of providing terrible, rude service. we came here as a birthday treat and they totally put us in a bad mood. donβt come here.
My kids loved the ice cream, but the service was terrible! The two young ladies working the counter were rude and unwelcoming to first time customers.
All I can say is YUMMMMMMMY!
Rolled Ice Cream from Scratch. There are plenty of different custom choices already up on the menu and you can even customize it some more but options are limited. I tried to add cheesecake to a different ice cream and i was told no but in the end i got what i wanted i jusy chose the cheeze cake any way and customized it. Top it off with more flavors before you take off. π₯
Very dirty inside, melted ice cream dripping from the walls, floor looked like it hadnβt been swept/mopped in weeks, minimal decor. Service was very slow. Itβs a fun treat, but the ice cream is mediocre.
Super cold ice cream with a dizzying array of options. The whole experience gets a bit confusing so you have to have time and patience?
It felt like visiting a frozen yogurt place in 2007, before anyone really realized the βself-serveβ thing could take off - a bland retail front, dirty floor and ikea furniture dot the location as an exuberant teen welcomes you.It was Sunday at 9pm, and the store was still busy teens enjoying the end of summer, college students hanging out, even a few families were still passing through.Iβve been curious about rolled ice cream for awhile, i got one with peanut butter, chocolate and salt. It was pretty good, if not gimmicky. Iβd probably go again. You should try it out!
Horrible service, teaching a rolled ice cream class in the middle of the day for some reason, holding the whole line up. We waited almost a half hour for $6 ice cream. Take your business unless you want to wait around half the day
They were out of the 1st choice and 2nd choice. Seemed like this was the first time making rolled ice. 20 min wait, 3 people in front of me. Still waiting....hope its worth it.
Cute little spot. Lots of flavors to choose from. Plus bubble tea!!
Fun for all ages! They have classic flavors as well as creative flavor combos like mixing Hot Cheetos into your ice cream. Fun to watch them βbuildβ your rolled ice cream dish.
Went to their ice cream making course today. My daughters each got to make rolled ice cream and there was plenty to take home. Yao was very patient and a great teacher. Highly recommend.
Awesome rolled ice cream. Had the pretzel carmel and salt... to die for!
This is a fun and unique place worth checking out. They mix your flavor up right in front of you using a base flavor like chocolate or vanilla. I got the βguilty pleasureβ which is Nutella and banana and I was kind of surprised to see them bust out an actual banana and real Nutella. The surface they mix on is super cold so it traveled well without melting. One thing to note is that it is time consuming to mix these concoctions up so you might have to wait a bit to be served. And donβt forget to tip!
Over 45 mins for the bubble tea I ordered and staff did not check in at all or let me know. Online orders pouring in. They only have one person working. I felt bad for them but yea probably not the best stop for ice cream unless you have 30 mins to an hour to wait!
It was pretty cool π! We got a groupon to roll our own icecreams. The employees were friendly and knowledgeable, and kept it fun despite the somewhat hectic atmosphere from a confrontational patron.
Pretty cool idea and the ice cream was good.
Delicious ice cream!
Delicious ice cream and delicious drinks! Price is what you expect when its all made to order, right in front of you. Friendly staff. Definitely recommend!
πIt took a little bit of time to get my order but it was worth it π
I really enjoy 22 Below and their bubble tea smoothies are great! The 3-star rating is due to their hours and lack of keeping consistent hours, or actually being open during the times they list. Iβd given up on going here well before COVID19 hit simply due to having attempted to go there multiple times during hours theyβd listed as being open. Iβd arrive, theyβd be closed, no sign on the door and no update to their website. Great concept and treats...if you can catch them actually open.
Great ice cream options and fun to watch them make it for you. I opted for chocolate and my partner had the strawberry.
Friendly people and the ice cream was great! They have a pool table inside which would be fun to use if we werent all worried about covid. Definitely a nice treat and hidden gem for Goose Hollow if youre in downtown Portland.
For a medium bubble milk tea: 70% large ice cubes + 20%water + rest = Cost 7$; Size Felt smallish.Feeling cheated. Try some other place.Tapioca perls or bobba were next to negligible too.
I never meant to give a one star rating to my absolute favorite place. It was an accident. The frozen goodness they put out is addicting. I can honestly say it is my number one and first place I would tell anyone to go to. I had to cut back after I made up a smorgasbord of different flavors and it was $14 dollars. It was a gigantic amount of frozen excellence. I apologize for the accidental one star I am correcting. Based on going there for years, there quality and creative flavors still amaze me as I have a small pallet. Now talking about it, Im going to pick some up. Luckily I live close, but I would drive from anywhere for that.
I have only had rolled ice cream one other time, in Arizona...it was better in Arizona. They had a pretty decent selection of flavors just didnt taste very good unfortunately. It was not that clean either
This was my first time trying rolled ice cream and it was amazing! The spot seemed super popular right after we got there about 50 people got in line and the poor guys seemed over whelmed but they pumped ou all the dishes pretty quick. Super tasty and so so many flavors to choose from. I will definitely be returning many times to come in the future I highly recommend checking this place out. Its fun to watch your ice cream being made. Definitely try the toasted marshmallow topping.
It was really cool to watch them make the ice cream rolls and it was delicious π π
They close at 11 but they saw us pull up at 10:50pm and came to lock the door. My sister went to the door and knocked and they just ignored her. I went to the door and while the man was cleaning, we were knocking a few times. He couldnt ignore any longer so he told us the machines are off and they are closing. Simple case of not wanting to serve customers just so they can leave on the dot. First impressions always last.
I was waiting for more than 30 minutes to get my rolled ice cream and they attended other costumers and forgot about my order. NEVER COMING HERE AGAIN!
Ok, so its a novel take on ice cream. But is it good? Tasty?Yes!!!Getting past the really interesting and surprisingly fun to watch process of making the to-order 22 Below ice cream (I was enthralled more by the chopping and scraping part of the floor show, then by the rolling part), the ice cream itself is quite tasty!I went chocolate with chocolate stuff, and it was rich, deep, complex, not too sweet, and a unique and unusually pleasant mouth feel.I immediately commented that some fruit combination using their technique would probably be really good. Ill try that next time.Is it worth driving across town for? I dont know about that, but Ill take 22 Below any day vs. waiting in line like some shlub at Salt & Straw. It definitely should be a stop on the way to or from Providence Park.If youre an ice cream lover, and want something youve never had before, this is your place.
The 2 employees, one with white and the other with yellow, were extremely nice, they fed my dog tooπ
Ordered a tea with popping bubbles and it wasnβt quite right the first time. They were so kind and instantly offered to make me a new one (with their new rainbow bubbles!). It was such a great experience, will definitely be back!
Great selection of boba and some adventurous rolled ice cream flavors.
This was SO delightful. I had never been. The girl at the counter was so sweet and directed me to mango and banana tropical treat. Its fun to watch them create your order. They were kind, friendly and it was rather quick and well worth the money. I came in kind of crabby and left with a smile on my face. Will go back again and direct friends to come..even if its not a hot day. And the space is very clean.
The ice cream we got was really good and very creamy but the Boba tea we got was very meh. The tea itself was a mild flavor and the jelly had no flavor at all. I would go again for ice cream but not for boba tea.
Enjoyed the unique ice cream. Its fun to watch them prepare each treat. Be prepared to wait a while as each is made when ordered.I had a Mud Slide with added carmel sauce and sliced almonds. It was delicious.
Its a pretty good roll ice cream place. Could use more flavors and choice of toppings. The place does get a bit crowded during weekends. Not much place to sit. Overall its worth a visit!
Definitely more of a novelty than anything. Variety is pretty good but quality is sub-par for the price and the interior feels dingy and outdated.
I got the New York Style Cheesecake and it was amazing but they messed up my cousins order but it was okay
I came in last night and got a taro milk tea. The service was super friendly and the tea was great. Just wanted to say the guy working was really cute and if you happen to read this you should follow my instagram -> coco.colala
This place got amazing ice creams! My favorite is the mango and green tea ice cream. I got to say, never had such delicious green tea ice cream until i came here! Anyway, the staffs were friendly and greeted us when we walked in, the cashier asked if we had any questions and explained the whole process to us. After we decided on the ice cream we want, they made it on a cold freezing pan and rolled it up into little rolls that fit perfectly into he cup. Thatβs not the end of it yet! I also get to choose whipped cream and sauces on top! Then thereβs a wide selection of toppings too! And guess what?! I can choose three toppings on top of the whipped cream and sauce for no additional cost!!! I got so much ice cream for the price! And they made it in front of you! Wait, did i mention about their bubble tea??? IT.IS.SO. GOOD!!!! And even for bubble tea, they got sooo much topping choices, not just tapioca. Anyway, I WILL BE BACK!
Fun! I came here with a child who loved watching them make his ice cream. I thought the ice cream itself might be a little ice, but it was really creamy and delicious. Very good. Good choice of toppings too. A fun treat to share.
The owner is amazing!!! Sheβs always so nice! I always have a customized order, and she goes above and beyond to make my order. Would definitely recommend this place for ice cream! They also have unique flavors too! My favorite is the green tea and mango! So good and tasty! LOL did I mention I got a dog ice cream for my dog?!?? They made it with real banana and coconut milk, so itβs safe and delicious, and my pup loves it!
Interesting Thai ice cream spot. Fun to watch them prepare things for you, lots of yummy toppings to choose from. The sundaes are huge and theres a ton of mix-in combos to choose from. It was very busy even on a Thursday afternoon, lots of kids from the high school there. Good value and worth trying out if for nothing more than the unique style.
Not only is the ice cream amazing, the environment is also super fun and is a cool place to hang with friends! I also left my wallet in there and the workers were extremely kind, held it for me, and literally everyone was in it when I got it back. Thank you!!!
Im torn between four and three. It was certainly a four star experience! But the actual ice cream was just okay.To start, this place is small and easy to miss. Its tucked into the side of a building without a lot of signage. If I didnt know the look at pictures of the inside before I came I might have missed it! We arrived around 8 and it was moderately busy. We arrived at the perfect time because a group of maybe 20 walked in right after us. The menu board is a little hard to read- I wish they had paper menus. But this certainly didnt detract from the experience. After maybe a 10 minutes wait we placed our order and paid. Then we got to watch all of the order get made! This was the coolest part. Watching how the rolled ice cream is made, especially with all of the flavor option, is pretty darn cool. The workers here handled the crowd like pros. They never seemed stressed, which is impressive with the size of the crowd. It took about 20 minutes from when we placed our order to get our food. But the process to make the ice cream is so labor intensive, I wasnt surprised. Just be ready to factor that in when you visit. There will be a wait.I got campfire and the boy got mudslide. Mine consisted of chocolate ice cream, toasted marshmallow and graham cracker crumbs. They toast the marshmallow right in front of you! Way cool! The mudslide was chocolate ice cream, Oreo and one other thing..I dont remember..sorry! Then we both got the option of whipped cream, 1 sauce and three toppings. You certainly get the most bang for your buck!!The only down side to the ice cream is its a little difficult to eat. Since the ice cream is so frozen and rolled so tightly, its difficult to pierce and get it on your spoon. Gonna be honest, I flipped many spoonfuls onto the table. Sad day. (But unlike the giant family who didnt bother to watch their kids or clean up after themselves- I did. Watch your damn kids. Be respectful of the workers and other guests. If you child is standing on the chair next to another guest, at ANOTHER table, youre doing something wrong.)The flavor was also good! Since they chop the ingredients and roll it through the ice cream you get the full flavor in each bite! It was great! All in all, it was a fun experience. Im not sure Ill be back soon but I wouldnt complain about returning.
Definitely a unique way to have ice cream. So many flavor options and they have smoothies and dessert type snacks as well! Great place for kids
Simply because they donβt update their hours.
This is the hottest new place in town. Bland non description decor but nice outdoor seating to enjoy your ice cream on a warm summer evening. It is more about entertainment than food as you watch the ice cream artists do their show. It is also the hangout with lots of teens taking Instagrams with themselves and the rolled ice cream. But adults seem to love the place too.
Fun. Had lavender and honey ice cream. The honey almost candied in the cold. Wish they listed all the ingredients available and let you compose your own. Loved it.
The staff here are so nice! And the ice cream sooo good. Weve been here twice now, and we like both their chocolate and fruit flavors. Will be back soon!
Truly a unique method of making icecream. The store was busy, and clean. The staff helpful and quick. I had the salty breeze and my son had a chocolate strawberry. Good stuff!
Sooooo good!
Liked the ice cream and the idea of thin-spreading it on icing skillet. As for staff, Im sorry - that is some intense labor. Doing that for hours is hard. Thank you guys.tip the staff for what you are going to enjoy.π
This place is awesome! Im sorry I havent found it till now. The word needs to get out more about it. My kids loved it
I must say this place is awesome! I was a bit skeptical at first I thought this rolled icecream were all looks and no flavor but to my surprise, its flavor is fantastic, its really yummy and creamy my wife and my daughter also loved it! I will sure visit again and try the other flavors.
We came through about 430ish, the shop was clean and quiet. The young man behind the counter was friendly and welcoming. He even smiled as my husband changed his mind twice before making his ice cream. He was quick and showed great skills as he crafted each ice cream and continued smiling and chatting with us. We will be making regular trips and next time we are going to get our dogs the pup cream treat. The ice cream rolls looked like roses, how pretty.β€πππ Experience 22 below and you wont be sorry.
Good Ice cream but served by two teens who said all of 3 words and looked like theyd rather be anywhere else
First time was great! But my second blended boba tea was not blended fully and it was full of large ice chunks.
