Each time i visit John Helmer the results are excellent. This is not a box store. Every item is of quality and you can expect the retailer chooses items based upon quality meaning one doesn’t have to question a decision. Adding to the goods the service is always fine. It is expected that purchases at John Helmer are meant for occasions and kept and maintained for years. It is a different type of buying experience and one i prefer.
Amazing place to find the right hat! You can try on all different shapes and sizes of hats there and they are very knowledgeable as well. You will find the right hat. Definitely check it out!
This shop is fantastic! The sales person was super helpful while not pushy or hovering. The selection of bow ties and hats is comprehensive but not overwhelming. They also have a small but well thought out selection of Alden footwear. I didn’t really look too much at the shirts or suiting, but what I did look at was very nice.
Went in looking for a vintage style drivers hat; he was very curtious and polite.I’ll definitely go back and get more things from this store. He even shook my hand and was so polite. Very nice young man.
This is a review written by a guy who needed a hat and found it.2020 - 2021 had lots of hardships and lots of changes. A minor change for myself during this period was a reduction in the amount of hair on my skull.I cant say if it was genetics or the increased stress of these times.Whatever it was I needed to look into some hats to prevent the head from sunburn. This tends to be important as patio life at restaurants, etc. seems to be here to stay for some time.I found a selection of various hat types and spent quite some time trying various things on. Staff just let me do my thing and I found two flat caps. I was able to rule out other hats pretty quickly.Id also note that from the stores external appearance you might think no deals can be found inside, but I got 2 hats for a good deal. Id much rather shop here again than at a big corporate online store.
Visited the store today with my 19 year old son. We knew absolutely nothing about hat style, quality, material, sizing, etc.. Jack greeted us at the door looking very much the professional that he is, and proceeded to school us on the various aspects of the industry. An hour later, and 3 lids in the bag, we walked out of the store completely satisfied, and much more knowledgeable than we could have imagined. We were even treated to a visit from the legendary John Helmer III, himself. What an incredible shopping experience, thank you.
How nice to walk into a fully stocked mens store that offers such good service. My adult son needed a suit for a wedding but was very inexperienced and after looking around at other alternatives (Mens Wearhouse for one), realized that he was in much better hands here with sound advice, better quality goods, and personalized service that was backed by experience.

Went in with a Panama hat in mind, received excellent service, was shown and tried on a number of brimmed hats of various materials and styles. Ended up with a stylish Panama hat I can wear and my wife liked.

If you have not stopped into John Helmer Haberdasher off of the corner of Broadway and Salmon you should check out their store. They are celebrating 100 years this year. They have Custom Suits, Dress Shoes, Belts, Hats, Socks, Leather items and a lot more.
Good section of hats to protect head from the sun!
After much searching, I found a perfect, high quality Greek fishermans cap in black leather available on this site. After placing the order, 7 days passed without so much as an order confirmation or updated status of the order. After inquiring about this, I was finally given an order confirmation number. After another week of waiting, I was informed that the item was out of stock until the following week, at which point they would send me the item. Upon arrival, over one month since my order was placed, a hat arrived that I can only describe as a costume accessory. In fact, I have since found the hat online sold as as just that - a costume accessory - for $20 (I was charged $78 plus shipping). Aside from the black color, not one feature of the hat resembled, even slightly, the hat pictured on their website or the description that accompanied it. The leather was fake, the accessories were not metal, and the cord was a cheap rope, and there was no listed manufacturer (only Made in China). Even the shape was not the same and looked cartoonish. I had no other choice then to send the item back for a return AT MY OWN EXPENSE of $15 shipping. Perhaps they are simply not good at selling merchandise online, in which case they should stop doing so, or at least refrain from lying to their customers about the quality of their products. This was the worst experience I have ever had buying a hat in my life, and customer service didnt do much to help. How they have been selling hats since 1921 with these business practices is baffling. My only regret, other than not ordering anything, is not taking photos of the poor excuse of a hat that I was sent to serve as evidence of its embarrassingly low quality. Dissatisfaction is an understatement, and I will never buy from John Helmer Haberdasher again.
Fun place to go for mens and womens hats. So many to choose from. Very helpful staff. People who complain about the rain need a bigger hat.

I went in looking for a hat. Ive been looking for a quality hat shop since I moved back home to Oregon from the Midwest about a year ago. In Wisconsin I found a top notch hat shop where I became a loyal customer. I have spent hundreds of dollars on my extensive hat collection and Ive been looking for a go-to shop where I can build a comparable relationship here. I thought perhaps I may have found that shop at this place. I could have never been so wrong. When I arrived, I felt like a ghost. I spent around 20- 30 minutes looking at hats, with a couple of designs Ive been in search of. The whole time I was there, not one word was spoken to me. Not even a hello, welcome, or at best, may I help you. Maybe they didnt like the way I looked. I was even wearing my Stetson that day so I know I looked good! 90% of the reason most people are loyal to a shop owner is customer service. Especially when you buy something as personal as a quality hat. Thats the first thing most people look at when they meet someone, so customer service is of the most important. Heck, half the time I go into a shop and they dont have what Im looking for, I usually find something else I like and buy that while I have them order the one I went in there for in the first place. Great customer service sells 2 hats instead of one. A decent hat easily starts at a minimum of $100 and up from there. YOU do the math shop keeper. Well the bottom line is, since I was totally ignored by this establishment, I will return the favor and ignore them. Oh by the way, I found a quaint little shop in Oregon City where I bought one hat (on a whim) while I ordered one that Ive been looking for.

I get easily overwhelmed by shopping in general. This was a great shopping experience. The shop staff were low pressure but extremely helpful. They helped rush tailor my pants and offered to stay open an extra few minutes if I couldnt get to them before the store closed. Best bow tie offerings Ive seen. Thanks!

My wife and I are from the UK and we were driving from LA up to Vancouver in June this year and spend 2 nights in Portland. I had been looking for a pair of Alden Cordovan shoes for a while and was very pleased to find John Helmer on the corner opposite our hotel. This is a very high quality, old-fashioned gentlemans shop. The service was friendly and professional and I was at last able to buy a pair of Cordovan shoes with polish and spare sets of laces. Cant praise this shop highly enough and would recommend it to anyone.
Great service, very helpful staff.I was looking for some Bills Khakis, but wasnt quite sure what style and color. Staff had a good supply of colors, fits, and sizes to try on, with a full catalog of additional fabrics to feel.Tried a few pairs on, but Im a little indecisive, so they helped explain the uses of different styles and colors.Ordered through them, they fitted them for me and tailored the length, leg opening, and waist to a better fit.Excellent service, kind and knowledgeable staff!

Great place for hats. However they ignored my son... Hes 16 and collects fedoras and is will known for his hats. Maybe because hes young they didnt think they would make a sale whatever the reason he got a hat he wanted anyway and left. Still they do have a nice assortment of hats.

Our adult son needed a new suit for an important interview. We had passed this store for years so, having been disappointed with the selections in other stores, thought we would give it a try.Though the inventory, of off the rack suits, was somewhat scant, the quality and prices were pleasantly surprising. We were pleased to find a decent suit for a reasonable price and from there were able to accessorize totally to create an entire outfit. (We also noticed that they charged less for some of the same brands of suits that their competitors carried.)The staff is knowledgable, helpful and courteous. We were able to complete our purchase, complete with a fitting, in under an hour.We will definitely consider them in the future.We would believe that their inventory of hats is unsurpassed in the Portland area, which provided a wonderful distraction for another adult son as he waited for his brother.
