When my car went capoot with terrible timing, the service and genuine kindness and concern I got from the crew here was head and shoulders above every other service option I was in communication with (and there were many).After a very discouraging week of struggling to find a place who would even bother to return my calls, PDX Automotive suggested this place (theyre another fave place in the city, they were just booked out for weeks). My conversations throughout the experience with Terica, Gina, Sarah, and every other person I worked with flowed seamlessly. They documented everything well, so I didnt end up having to repeat myself endlessly like often happens working with dealerships/service bays.They graciously found a way to fit me into their busy schedule sooner than expected, and I felt very taken care of from start to finish. They also didnt overpromise, and were very conscious of getting the go-ahead from me before proceeding with each step as they worked to figure out what was up with my vehicle. They identified the problem, fixed it up, and got me on my way.As a side note, this place offers a variety of communication options, including text —which I loved. We have gone here twice (with two different Prius models) over the past 6 months, and had excellent experiences both times. One thing I really like is that all of their charges are written out and easy to comprehend online, which you can review before you pay for them (also online). My Honda broke down while visiting Portland. I had it towed to the nearest shop, a large Honda dealer. The service department there said I needed several repairs, about $3000. On the advice of a long-time Portland resident, I had it towed from the Honda dealer to Hawthorne Auto Clinic. According to the mechanics at Hawthorne, my car didnt need all the work the Honda dealer said it did. They had me back on the road for $800. I feel theyre incredibly honest and fair. Ill go back next time I break down in Portland!!

We were on a road trip and they came highly recommended by our shop in San Francisco area. They are very thorough. Very polite and courteous. Tamnika Im sure I am getting the name wrong but I am close I think, helped me and was the sales person who told me whats wrong with my car was very flexible and adapted to me and had me eating out of the palm of her hand by the end, just kidding but I was a little defensive at 1st but then I trusted her at the end and was buying extra stuff. They seemed like a really really good shop and I could tell because they were so busy with customers! I highly recommend them!!!

Very efficient, and good communication. Prices seemed fair.I took car in because of flashing engine light. Diagnosed with rodent chewing wires! I called at 7:30 Monday morning, brought caring by 7:45, they were done by 1:15 including replacing wires, and a few extras like oil change and new wiper blades!Friendly staff.
Called in the morning to make a DEQ TOO testing appointment and they were able to fit me in less than an hour later. Everyone was extremely kind and helpful and the testing was done in less than 10 minutes.
Friendly staff, easy and convenient scheduling, low prices, no scare tactics, and great service. I cant remember how long theyve been taking care of our cars--at least 25 years. And only two cars in that time as they take such good care of them, our first lasted 21 years with their superior service. I was heading overseas for three months and my car started acting up as I was heading to Seattle for my flight. I just pulled in and they immediately assessed the situation and outlined my options with me. I was able to postpone repairs until my return which eased my stress level. Dead battery. Walked to auto clinic four houses away and asked for help. Technician walked back to car with me, jump started it with device, then drove it to shop for recharge and evaluation. Could not get easier. I am very happy with customer service and their automotive evaluation of 17 year old car. Definitely coming back for future auto work.

Referred here by Metro Metric after many years with them (got a VW, they dont work on European cars) and have had a great experience every time. Very professional, very courteous and Ive never been overcharged. Great service.
Overpriced. Smug about it. Incomplete receipts. Years of referrals and no positive honest treatment to show for it. Silly things like charging $6 for spark plugs, $80 for oil changes, $200 for an inspection/diagnosis. Very unhappy with their attitude. They are knowledgeable, but, use it to take advantage of people even long-time customers. Smug.
I have used Hawthorne Auto Clinic since about 1990, so a long time. I feel very fortunate to find a high quality repair shop that I trust.
Truck had radiator fluid leak. I couldnt find leak and figured it was somewhere I couldnt reach so I took it in. Diagnostic $100.00. TOP hose needed replacement. Bottom hose changed as well, on their recommendation. $135.00 labor! $100.00 parts and fluid. I dont feel great about paying $335 bucks to swap out a hose and refill the fluid, but hey, live and learn. Take heed, friends.EDIT: Yes, I smiled, paid, and said thank you to your office attendants whom I spoke with. Youve been in business for many years and clearly many people have had good dealings with you. I think the wording of your response says much about your character and the kind of businessman you are. Also, you used my first name SIX times and I think people who read this will understand your intent. I choose not to trust you going forward and to let others know that perhaps they should think twice before spending money at your establishment. I brought in my 14 year old Civic with a clicking noise in the steering column to find out if it was a dangerous or merely annoying issue. One of the technicians sat with me in the car to listen and confirmed that its just annoying. He didnt attempt to up-sell me or get me to leave the car for a checkup. He even patted the dashboard and said theyre a good old model of car. :) I left with peace of mind and no money spent. I really appreciate their integrity and friendliness.---I recently brought my car back to Hawthorne to replace a headlight, which was done on time, of course, and for a great price. I also got a quote to repair my windshield wipers which dont work on intermittent mode. The motor was replaced twice by another repair place and it failed both times just past their warranty expiration. Very frustrating. Ill be scheduling an appointment with Hawthorne to get it fixed because Im sure theyll use good replacement parts and because of their really great warranty. :)
I have a Chevy Volt that has a salvage title, so no guarantee from GM or the dealer. Discovered HAC has expertise for my car as well as other EVs and hybrids. What a relief! And they are consumer focused, fair and honest. I immediately felt at home. This is a great shop run by wonderful people.
The woman I spoke to on the phone was very nice. As far as diagnosing my car went, it was quick and thoroughly explained. I felt their quote was a bit high so I decided to take my car to a shop recommended to me by a coworker. The 2nd quote I got was 950 dollars cheaper than Hawthorne Auto Clinic. I even brought the original quote to the new shop and was mortified at the difference.

Hawthorne Auto Clinic has always given me high-quality vehicle repair and maintenance. All the staff are friendly, helpful, and answer questions thoughtfully. I have an older vehicle that still runs great, due to the skill of their mechanics. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.
Great shop if you have too much money and dont know what to do with it. Shop around and look at other mechanics.Went in for a hard start and left with a nearly no-start condition. Asked for a fuel pressure test (should be $40) because fuel was leaving the rail, was told other tests might be needed. Got my fuel pressure test $150 later. Quoted $600 to replace O ring on a #2 injector. Got estimates from other shops and I can get the whole damn injector replaced for $300.Later was called by the office to say they goofed and it was actually the #3 injector. Thats some pretty important information.Idles and starts way rougher than when I brought it in, no idea what they did to it.Asked for transmission service quote, was told nearly $400. Other shops estimated $250 with labor.Had previously tried to schedule a transmission service for my pickup, and was asked by the office, Well, does it need it? Yeah guys, it needs it, thats why Im trying to schedule it. Didnt end up bringing it in.Dont bother replying to this review. I dont care about your BBB rating, I dont care that other people got good service. I had a bad experience and was quoted expensive and unnecessary services.
UPDATE TO PREVIOUS REVIEW - Still the best auto shop (in my opinion) in the city. Great service, wonderful safety protocols in this day and age of COVID, and the service was done to my satisfaction. Highly recommend.I started bringing our cars to Hawthorne Auto after a bad experience at a dealer. Both my Mazda and two Subarus have received service from Hawthorne Auto. My most recent experience, a simple oil change was done promptly and was reasonable, considering the attention to detail Jim and his staff provide to each customer. Each of my vehicles have been gone over with a fine tooth comb by this amazing group of people and I will continue to bring my car to what is, in my opinion, the best auto shop in the city of Portland.

This review is incredibly fair; you should listen to it before spending the extra money on car repairs here.I am conflicted about writing this review because I have had a lot of good experiences with Hawthorne Auto. I mostly trust the technicians there to diagnose and fix car problems, but Hawthorne Auto is a business and I need to review it like one.If you are not a wealthy person, do not get your car repaired at Hawthorne Auto. Even if you are, be very careful about authorizing repairs before you get a second opinion elsewhere. Or take it in to get diagnosed here, and then have another shop do the repairs. Sounds crazy, right?Every time I take my cars to Hawthorne Auto, there is a new problem. The second to last time I took my car in, I was told that I needed to replace a set of bushings, and that it would be $6-700. After a couple weeks of saving money to do that, I went back in and was told that now there were two sets of bushings to replace, and that it would be $14-1500.I didnt have that kind of money for the kind of car I owned, so when I got my oil changed elsewhere I asked them to give me a quote on bushings. The new place quoted me ~$500 to replace both sets of bushings. When I brought it in to get an inspection, they said that the bushings were in decent enough shape for an older car, and that they wouldnt recommend it. Thats right, I offered a mechanic shop $500 for free and they kindly said no thanks that wont be necessary.I am not saying that Hawthorne Auto is crooked or exploitative. I think that they think they are doing a good job, they want their mechanics to make a living wage, and they want your car to run perfectly. At the same time, I dont think they take a holistic view of a cars health. This is an 18yo grandma car that I bought for $5000 cash, drove for five years, is starting to rust through the bottom, and will get a couple more years out of. Its not a car to spend its entire worth on fixing imaginary problems.I imagine that Hawthorne Auto is used to servicing much nicer cars for people with much more money to burn. If you are one of those people, Hawthorne Auto should be a great and reliable shop. If not, find a mechanic that has a broader perspective on car issues, and if you find one that tells you not to waste money, keep going to them. I own a much nicer car now, and I pay much less to get the kind of service I thought I was getting at Hawthorne Auto.

I have known these folks for years and they do excellent work. They have taken care of my cars and I trust them to leave them in good working order. They also have a long history in the Hawthorne neighborhood and treat everyone as a friend. I was waiting for my car to get some headlights replaced and twice in less than 30 minutes someone came in, once to get warm and once to ask for information. Both of these folks then asked for a bus ticket. Our good friends at Hawthorne Auto generously gave them each a ticket while maintaining the persons dignity and honoring their needs very graciously. Bravo!
I have been having my 1995 Saturn station wagon serviced by Hawthorne Auto Clinic for several years after the Saturn dealership went under in Vancouver WA and I wanted to find a local Portland repair/service shop closer to my house. A friend recommended Hawthorne Auto Clinic and Ive been very pleased with the service from my initial emergency starter replacement to normal oil change maintenance. Their repair advice has been sound and they dont do repairs or services you dont need. Their hours and location are convenient as well. I highly recommend them.

I went to Hawthorne Auto to have my Honda CRV checked to make sure it was safe to drive to the cost. They took me in right away! It was checked for a very reasonable price. The technician walked me through all his findings and did not try to sell me anything. There were a few things wrong that needed repair such as the rear breaks, rear wheel cylinder leaking, and other things that were a bit minor but important such as changing the windshield wipers. I would 100% trust them to do a quality job. The office staff was awesome and professional and I highly recommend this shop to everyone!

I have had lots of work done on my car by Hawthorne Auto Clinic. They are always thoughtful and thorough, and they do great work. Most importantly, they stand by their work.I recently had my timing belt replaced by them, and afterwards my car was making a squeaking noise. I took it back in, and they researched the problem and fixed it right away (it was a belt that needed additional tightening), at no charge to me. They were kind and helpful throughout the process.I love that they offer Saturday hours now, too! This is really helpful for someone like me who works during the week.
I went here for a steering and suspension inspection on my high mileage Miata before a cross country road trip. They did a very thorough check for a very fair price. The technician walked me through all his findings and did not try to upsell me on anything. The estimate for the suggested repairs was a little high for my budget and was not immediately needed, but I would 100% trust them to do a quality job if I ever do decide to get my shocks worked on. The office staff was very kind and professional and I would highly recommend this shop to anyone.

Had a tough electrical issue where there was a constant short in my tail lights they were able to find the short and fix it very quickly keeping the cost down. For anyone who has looked for a wire short you know how tedious this process is. Cant say again how great they were.

Seemed like competent shop, but their recommendation for repair was too expensive and they would not go any other way. Had a blown head gasket, only repair they offered was a new motor...yeah right. Paid less than 1/3 they quoted me to get it replaced somewhere else, with a 2 year warranty on parts and labor included.

We have been taking our 2001 Prius to Hawthorne Auto for many years. Without exception we have found the folks there to be highly trained and impeccably honest and we cant recommend them highly enough! We recently brought the car in for an oil change and asked them to check the error codes because a warning light had been coming on and off for quite a while. The result? The codes showed a problem with the main battery pack. Hawthorne Auto had installed a refurbished battery pack a couple of years ago and they told us it is still under warranty, so they are replacing it at no cost. Just one example of the way Hawthorne Auto diagnoses problems and does business.

Brought my 2010 Prius in with a Check Hybrid Status warning. They quickly diagnosed the problem which turned out to be covered under warranty. While I ended up taking the car to a dealership to have it fixed for free, I have no doubt that I will bring the car to Hawthorne Auto Clinic for any other issues that might come up. They knocked $100 off my bill, gave me a detailed list of the cars other issues (e.g. dark transmission fluid), and replaced my license plate bulbs. Great service!

These folks really know what they are doing. I had an ongoing problem with my 2006 Subaru wagon which others were not able to identify and thus could not fix the problem. These folks found the problem and fixed it after a short test drive. Sure glad that thumping sound is now history.
