This was totally fine but not amazing. Service was rushed and not very friendly. Pastries were good. Cappuccino good. I know it is super popular and we didn’t think it was bad but we would rather go somewhere less crowded and more friendly.

If you love European pastries this is the place. Many of the pastries are quite authentic and delicious to Austrian and Hungarian sweet dishes. It was absolutely lovely and the feel of the place had a rustic, memory lane decor. From handwritten menu and the set up. The seats outside made the place even more fun to go and you would seat a cross the church as well.

Some of the best desserts in NYC! If you’re European, this will bring you a little closer to home. Sweets aren’t too sugar or butter heavy, and they have large variety. Hungarian coffee is a must try! They are open for outdoor dining on the streets, and views of midtown are gorgeous. Inside of the shop is beautiful, with lots of stuff on the walls. It’s usually quite busy, so I’d prepare for a potential 5-10 min wait if I’m visiting. Cash only by the way, so make sure to prepare money upfront. Poppyseed pastry so good!!!

I really wanted to love this place because I grew up in Hungary, but the strudel was disappointing. The pastry was too dry and brittle and fall apart. The poppy filling was too sweet. The apple filling was good the same day, but next day the taste was off.On a positive note, the staff is great and the Hungarian coffee was very good.

AMAZING. Best croissants in the city! and nice coffee. The environment is great, I studied here a lot when I was in law school. They started accepting card payment a little while back which is also great. I have had about half of the items and everything has been amazing. The Croissants are by far my favorite but the raisin Danish also gets a mention because it is delicious as well.

I am trying to understand why this place is so popular... Im not from around here, but, is it because they are the only place to serve central European pastries in upper Manhattan? U wait in a line, and the the service is rushed, the person behind the counter could not even tell me what was in the pastries (what!?!). So i choose something, and they dont even offer to warm it up??. It was cold and stale and the dough was hard, like it was made three days ago!If people think this place is the bomb, I feel terribly sad for them... I was expecting so much better for the price. Maybe they are resting on their laurels. But whatever the case, definitely dont go out of your way to come here. Sorry to the owner, but come on. Ive had similar at a corner store.

Tried the poppyseed and sacher torte recommended by some of the reviewers here and really liked it! The sacher tort had a delicious and light chocolate cake with jam sandwiched generously in between. It’s just a really solid piece of cake. The strudel had a nice crispy exterior with powdered sugar. The poppyseed filling was really interesting (kind of like black sesame in asian desserts, but of a different taste). I enjoyed it tremendously, just really yummy! There are plenty of seats in the café itself, and the people working at the counter are all very friendly, despite how busy it is. The queue moves fast (I queued about 5-8 minutes at 3pm on a weekday) and most people don’t stay in to sit and eat. I recommend eating in as they heat up the strudel for you. Also, they’ve started accepting credit cards!

What better way to repay this business by giving them a stellar review. This is one of my go to coffee shops when I travel to NYC. The coffee is always consistent and a cheap affordable price. They also have a wide array of desserts. The biggest bonus for me is that they are open pretty late. Espresso machines close at 8:10, regular drip coffee after that only. The line is 100% worth it

Cash and Card both, I think they recently got a Card/Apple Pay machine. But prices may vary depending on the payment method.Lovely place! As you enter, you’ll get the comforting waft of coffee beans and freshly baked goods. No wifi but I think it’s worth using your hotspot to work there, or just read and chill. I got the Lemon slice with Coconut crust which was the perfect combination of tangy and creamy with a crunchy crust.Highly recommend visiting, probably gonna go back tomorrow to try more from their menu :)

I had no idea something as simple as a crescent or plain cheese cake could be so delicious! The pastries arent too sweet and the texture of them is unmatched. Its hard to pick a favorite, Ive loved everything.Ive also brought pastries to my friends, family, and coworkers and they all say they are some of the best they have ever had.If theres a line, its 100% worth the wait. TLDR: service quality ruins the otherwise amazing experience. No review will do justice. One of my happy places, despite the new seating for covid. Grab a book or a journal or a philosophically inclined friend, sit indoors and try the NapoleonUpdate, 2021: changing my rating due to a recent interaction with a staff member who, let’s just say, is a complete misfit in the soulful place that I’ve loved for years. Please consider hiring based on positive spirit and attitude rather than simple length of tenure behind that counter. I will be back, but more reluctantly so because of her. We walked 30 blocks to get there, but I guess hours here aren’t accurate? Or maybe the staff was eager to get out? if they had been any more polite about it I would have walked back there again the next day. But honestly the way I was scolded by the waitress could have brought tears to my eyes if I let it. She needs to be replaced ASAP. What a waste.

Great cosy atmosphere, with lots of students on their laptops.4 Oct 2019: Arrived at 10.30pm, and it was still crowded despite it being 15min to closing time. Nabbed a table as other people were leaving and stayed to have an almond half-circle thing which I don’t know the name of (whoops!) which tasted like Amaretto biscuits, as well as a hot chocolate (nice and warming, I think it was the version without added sugar - they asked if I wanted it with sugar) and a latte (apparently also very nice). Bought a cream cheese and cherry strudel to have at home - the cream cheese part was great, the cherry bit not quite to my liking but would appeal to people who want their cherries sweet rather than tart.5 Oct 2019: Walked past in the morning and popped in to buy a few things to take away. I had the hot chocolate again, with sugar this time I think as it seemed a lot sweeter, still good though. Apparently the cappuccino was great except that we accidentally ordered it with sugar, which wasn’t everyone’s favourite but was our mistake. Also shared an almond croissant - I imagine that if you like croissants to be quite crunchy outside and fluffy inside this may not be your cup of tea, as the outside is relatively soft, but personally I loved it - possibly the best almond croissant I’ve ever had, with the almond paste and pastry blending together wonderfully.Quick warning that it’s cash only, but there’s a bank a block away.Food: 5/5Ambience: 5/5Service: 4/5

We went to check out this spot, popular among any and all writers, for some sweets. It was crowded, but we managed to find a small table. All the pastries looked interesting and tasty, but you can’t really tell which one is what, as they don’t have any signage. It is also not easy to take a look at all of them, as people line up in front of the show windows to order and pay.The first item we tried was a slice of Lemon Cake. It had coconut crust on the bottom. Nice flavor combination of tart lemon and sweet coconut. Then we tried chocolate cookie sandwich? I believe it is Ishler. It was described as “two hazelnut cookies with bittersweet chocolate cream.” It tasted more like ginger cookies… It had loads of chocolate in the middle that was tough and hard, I wouldn’t call it a “cream” by any means… A bit messy to eat, since you have to bite into it, as the filling is too hard and thick to cut with knife. It was still way too much sugar and too sweet. The last item we tried was Éclair. This was the only item that I could say “light” or maybe it tasted light in comparison to the other items??? It had chocolate cream and Bavarian or custard cream? There were many customers with their laptop, and you could tell they have been there for a long time… And they seems to NOT care about others looking for a seat. I saw a couple using 3 tables (6 chairs), with their personal items spread all over so that no one can share the table. The pastries were nice, but all too sweet for my taste buds… It will be perfect for super sweet teeth people, I am sure.

Sooooo freaking good! It defies reason. I have NEVER been a person for sweets. I bought a few slices of cakes to take home for the offspring at the recommendation of the line out of the door and wrapping around the corner. Got home, opened the box to sample a piece before the kids devoured it and man oh man! I was the demolisher. Barely wanted to share. Every single slice was amazingly well balanced, the flavors were explosive and fresh. We went back the next day and the next weekend. Only my waistline stops me from visiting every single weekend but I bought a few slices to a pottery party in Brooklyn and three people have come to Manhattan since for their cake. Nuff said.

Nothing special as for deserts, I saw italian cookies... Not sure what specifically here is Hungarian. Venetian coffe was very good. I would give this place 1 star for not being able or not willing to manage the tables: one person seats at 2 tables with 4 chars for hours with laptop and if you get during bad weather here and rrying to seat down inside, forget it. The staff wouldnt do anything. Suggestion: why do not you simply place typed policy notes on walls of your cafe to let people know that one person can occupy only 1 table not 2 with laptop and people have to be simply aware of their surroundings and other people in cas when there is a demand for seats.... Common, this is not rocket science, this is common sense and respect to others.

Not sure where to start. I wish I could give a minus 5. Being born and raised in Hungary I crave Hungarian pastries but I would tell Hungarians; please never visit this place! I have purchased multiple items and the only one that tasted somewhat Hungarian was the cream in the Cremes. The Dobos was horrible I cannot even explain how bad. Items with poppy seed, please whomever makes these, ground the poppy seed and make sure it is fresh. The remaining items are just as bad. If you did not grow up in Hungary you might like it because you think it is ethnic and have no idea how these should taste. As for the pastry chef if you are Hungarian please visit your home country to remind you how these pastries should be prepared. Best of luck.
