Really amazing bookstore that cares about its community. Before the pandemic they hosted a lot of events where young kids could read or show writing or drawings they created to an audience. Throughout the pandemic, they continued to support people in the community through their food pantry. Plus, they have a wide range of books available and their store is very beautiful.

This was my first experience with this bookstore. It is around my community, which is a plus. Since the Pandemic started, you arent allowed in the store but they let you order online and pick up. The last couple of weeks you can go online and or look at their windows and buy that way. When I arrived to the store I had not order online. So, my child and i window shopped and picked a couple of books and a gift certificate. The service was awesome. After asking some questions they were really accommodating because the gift certificate was for instore, they were willing to do it for online for the person that will receive the G.C.They had an array of great books, that Ill be back for. Also, they have a recirculation off-site store on Sundays. Which, will be cool cause they didnt have a Dr. Suess book my child wanted. They most likely will have it there I was told. The only con was that I tried to reach them through FB twice and received no response. In all fairness I should have emailed them.

I purchased a book on their website and picked it up at the store. Two kind folxs had a stand registering people to vote, and there were two staff inside waiting to assist customers. Quick, safe, and smooth process! Everyone was kind via email and in person. Highly recommend!

What an amazing place! I went to try and find some used books for my mothers 8th grade classroom and I was able to amass a huge haul of classics and newer books very cheaply. The staff was incredibly helpful and warm. For such a small store, they manage to have such a wide selection. They also provide a space for community events and a cute childrens corner. Im definitely going back to fill up my own bookshelves.

Super friendly and knowledgeable staff. Got a huge bag of books @$20, happy there were around the neighborhood since the Barns and Noble was primarily selling Colombia college memorabilia. All volunteers (amazing) and lots of events. Great experience/environment for the book lover.

Word Up was a temporary bookstore in 2011, and its immediate popularity allowed it to become a permanent part of Washington Heights. With works of local writers and Spanish books gracing the shelves, this is a great local establishment finally serving a very underserved area. Books are neatly organized, the space is cozy and charming, and the volunteers are wonderfully kind. Be sure to check the events calendar because you just might be able to visit on a day of a concert, literary reading, author signing, or theatrical show. This is a true community bookstore. Word.

A book lovers playland, amazing deals throughout-- the antidote to chains and online shopping. And-- its entirely staffed by volunteers-- a true community bookshop! AND-- some of the best live comedy and other events to be found anywhere, plus book signings-- almost all of the events are FREE. Worth the trip up to Washington Heights for anyone who loves books. Or just really cool NYC stuff!!

This is a community bookstore run by the community. You might not find what youre looking for, but it might find you. Local events, great staff (all volunteers) and fair prices. Nice comics section as well.

I buy used books often here. I also like to attend certain events and appreciate the support it brings back to the community. I Do not dig it as a volunteer, which has to do with how much the space can struggle with keeping it a safe space. I encourage people to donate and buy, but only four stars for the legitimate need to practice the safe space it promotes.

The staff {{ALL VOLUNTEER}} really cares about books, the community and I could not feel more welcomed or thankful to have such a great resource for literacy and the arts in my neighborhood than WOrRD UP is. Their reach goes beyond the walls, to community events and even a take a book leave a book book cart at the Morris-Jumel Mansion. The ALL volunteer run staff not only curate books to cost less than a weekly Starbucks short-cutting of resources, but provide and propel local artists to have a space if only for a handful of audience members. This place should be given a key to the city of New York and made a landmark. C. H. E. C. K. I. T. out.
