This store has everything. All the baking/decorating supplies you need. I will give them that. Even though most items are way overpriced. However I’m not sure I want to keep spending money here. Everyone is so rude and curt when you walk in. Half of the time no acknowledgement. Except for one guy, he’s always friendly and ask if you need help. I feel like I’m being ostracized & watched as soon as I step in there. Imagine that, as a black woman. The cashier is always unfriendly. Even before covid. Now I can still feel it behind her mask. I’ve been coming to nycake for years. When they were at the old location & much friendlier. Yes, it’s convenient & they have everything but feeling uncomfortable & watched just doesn’t seem worth it.

For several years I have been going to the NY Cake store to fulfill my needs of various baking equipment and ingredients that are not normally found in most markets. NY Cake is conveniently located on 22th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues in its newer and more spacious location. Earlier this week I made a stop for the coveted melting chocolate and in search of hazelnut extract as I had not been able to find this item in various markets. To my delight NY Cake came through once again and not only had both of these items but also offered a wide selection of items in both departments. So many times, I run into a panic this time of the year looking for items which range from cookie cutters to green/red sprinkles or in this case hazelnut extract. Each time I have been able to find this needed item at NY Cake! It eases the stress of the moment and is a comfort to know the odds of finding the “Holy Grail” of baking items will be at the one and only NY Cake store!

I have been a regular customer at the store here for a few months, since I started experimenting with baking. I decided to take the Cake Decorating 101 Class last week, and I had a fantastic time! The class had two other people in it, and I know that the class capacity is reduced due to covid. Temperatures were checked, forms were filled out, and we were all spaced more than 6 feet apart with plenty of hand sanitizer nearby; all safety measures were accounted for.The class itself reviewed a few different icing techniques, and at the end we learned how to effectively apply icing to our own mini cakes starting with our proper foundation, and extending to the techniques we learned.Lisa is an excellent teacher; her technical but warm approach was the foundation for an experience that left me feeling seen, understood, and encouraged. She also took the time and care to open up and give us the origin story of how her mom started decorating cakes in her living room, and through enjoyment and one thing leading to another, she eventually expanded enough to open NY Cake. The story was the icing on the cake ;) of the experience.I left the class with my cake (that I designed for my puppys first birthday), the decorating template we used in class, and most importantly and notably... newfound confidence in decorating my own cakes! As a side note, there was something about the experience and repetition of practicing the techniques over and over that was incredibly satisfying and cathartic, and it reminded me of how sometimes coloring is recommended for adults for stress relief/anxiety reduction.I am excited to sign up for Cake Decorating 102, and check out the other classes as well!

Newly opened store location with big display space and fresh pastry, but with room for improvement. Friendly staff at the front cafe. Visited the first week after the opening. $1.75 single espresso is pretty decent and a true delight, while $2.75 small coffee is very awful with strong acidity and bitterness but without any aroma. $5.95 flourless chocolate truffle cake is pretty rich, but the chocolate aroma seems to be overpowered by too much sugar. $3.45 pain au chocolat remains with icy cold chocolate chunks without much aroma except sweetness, but the bread does have expected good buttery taste and good texture. Very surprised to see fruit files crawling over the pastries on display and also flying around the seating area. Visited again three weeks after the opening. Surprised to see the prices for coffee have gone up for $3 for a small coffee. Sweet pastries remained their specialty. Fidnt like my saggy spinach and cheese pastry which lacks both flavor and texture. Friendly service staff seemed to still be inexperienced to deliver consistent service quality. The sitting area was messy and did not look inviting. My order warm pastry was served on a sheet of paper instead of a plate for stay-in eating. Its single espresso only had a half of water from what it should be served this time while the price increased from my last visit. More freshly baked pastries were added, but without visible price information on display. Visited again in March 2019 and bought whole bunch of cookies which were placed 8n a regular paper bag instead of a wax paper bag. BY the time I got home, the butter from cookies soaked through the thin paper bag. Wish this place could pick up its quality to be on par with its pricing positioning soon.

Update 10/20/18: So after Jenny, one of the co-owners of NY Cake contacted me about my negative review, I shared with her my concerns stated in the review I previously wrote. She said that she was thankful for the constructive criticism I gave and have spoken to staff and is trying to improve the quality of the atmosphere. She again reached out to me last week (which was about a month or two after we initially exchanged emails) to share that they were having their grand opening this Thursday to Sunday with free give aways and 10% off. I decided to check it out and upon walking in you see a skyline of NYC make with bake ware and there is a bakery!! The area, which I assume is the classroom area (behind the bakery) is pretty nice and actually similar to the kitchens I learned in at Institute of Culinary Ed. Its much bigger and brighter at this new location, definitely not dusty like the old location. I do have to say that upon walking in and seeing the bakery, the worker did greet me and Jenny was actually the first person to ask if I needed help. Its actually nice to see the owner walking around checking out whats in stock and talking to customers. There are things here that I dont see at Kerekes or other bake shops, so I will most likely be back, now that I have actually seen and experienced that the owners do care about their business and what customers think. There is also a calendar of kids classes, which is really pretty cool and Michelle who I believe is the director of the bakery was really nice too and told me they were hiring...its a bit tempting, but I dont think I really have the time. I am leaving this review at 4 stars at the moment, because this is a new beginning, I didnt have much interactions with the actual associates and I want to go back at a later time to see if their customer service improves over time. It is definitely a big leap from 1 star to 4 stars, so I hope that I can edit this review at a later time to give them 5 stars.I am a home baker who went to a professional baking school and externed for a popular bakery by the name of a famous Chef. I know the pastry chef would always go to NY Cake and Co to purchase items he needed, so I assumed this would be a very good place to shop for my baking needs...not the case...I will share 3 instances in which I was not satisfied with the staff and owner...1. I took a class there for cake decorating and the room was really tiny and there was an outburst by a customer who was trying to return and item, which the company would not take back because they said it was used....maybe it was, but there must be something really wrong for the customer to be so dissatisfied that you could hear her in the whole store and probably down the block.2. I was with a friend who was purchasing A LOT! I wasnt feeling so well, I asked if I could use the bathroom, the worker told me there was no bathroom and when I told him I have taken a class there before and knew there was a bathroom, he still did not allow me to use it. As a paying customer (which I have purchased items before), you should just let me use it when Ive caught you in your lie...which from the reviews, is obvious they do do that.3. The last time I went to purchase items I could not find elsewhere, there was a lady who asked for an item and the worker did not know the difference between the shape of a board or a box that she needed. She went to the register and complained that the worker did not know the difference between her asking for something that is a square or a circle and suggested that he should no longer work there if he cant do something as simple as that. After she left I over heard the cashier saying that if Lisa, the owner heard about any of that, she would be furious. I agree with the customer and wanted to make a complaint, but I ended up not doing so. Some time later, I went back with my friend and the guy was still working there, barely doing anything.

I come here on a regular basis. They almost always have what I need and I dont expect the staff to be overly friendly so Im not bothered by the lack of cheer. The selection of pans, molds, and packaging supplies is what matters for me, so normally Im great!!!That being said, I had to buy pre-made fondant for the first time and 2/3 of all the fondant I purchased was brick hard! The containers looked fine when I purchased them but when I got home some of them had the tab opened slightly and others had nearly invisible cracks on the bottom... it was like trying to roll out cement. (I fixed them but it cost me hours I was trying to save by purchasing in the first place)So...If youre going for fondant or gum paste check the containers thoroughly! If youre going for basic pans and molds, know what you need and have fun.If youre going to browse, have a budget cause youre definitely going to spend. If youre going for great customer service, smiles, and comfort... try Michaels.

We have done other trips like this, and this was by far the grossest place. One of the owners, Lisa, was having her lunch cooked by one of the Hispanic workers on a griddle in the back, where the class was taking place which was uncomfortable to watch. We made our frosting and stuff, fighting over the singular measuring utensils. Like go to the store part and get another set of measuring cups, how cheap are you? The teacher was disorganized and kept disappearing to wash a bowl or a mixer. It was a circus show.

They have premise frosting, batters, pans, sprinkles of all types, cutters of all types, decorations, premise sugar florals. It’s amazing.Staff: so friendly. They’re really helpful if you need anything. They probably get visited with many busy bakers and businesses. If you’re a novice baker, don’t be intimidated by their attention.Desserts: they have some vegan options! As well as normal baked goods. I think what sets their bakery apart from other bakeries is that their bakery is for samples of what you can buy or what they can provide you for your special occasion. They bake foods with traditional methods: cream, oil, flour, sugar. Don’t expect a cake made of sweet potato or brownies made of black beans or psyllium husk or date sugar.I like how clean this place is. When you visit, you can smell the sweetness in the air to inspire or lure you deeper into the store.

I recently called to find out if they had a specific item in stock. The person I spoke with immediately answered yes - didnt bother looking . . . just said yes and hung up. A few hours later when I was at the store, what I was looking for wasnt there. I spoke to a salesperson who told me You shouldve called. I said that I did . . . I was told No you didnt. If you did call, youd know were out of stock. I left, waited a bit then called from my cell phone asking for a similar item. This time I was told We dont have time to look, come in and look for it yourself. Luckily, I found a place close to home where I can get my candy making needs and thats where I go.
