I recently traveled from Florida specifically to visit this music shop, and it exceeded all my expectations. The selection and the staff are world class, set in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.Dan and Ian were amazingly nice, knowledgeable, and patient, helping me navigate multiple options for a new acoustic guitar. And Adam gave me great advice regarding guitar cases and traveling with a high end instrument.Wonderful experience and I highly recommend to anyone looking for a guitar or mandolin to visit this store. You will be very glad that you did! Thanks, guys!

Simply a great place. I have purchased several instruments from them, including a guitar a few days before posting this review. Im not local to them so I depend on their website descriptions. They have always been accurate, and the staff has always been great at answering any additional questions I may have -- their replies to me have always indicated they get what Im asking. Prices seem fair and their packaging is top-notch. Quick and safe deliveries. Also, outstanding selection of new and used instruments. There is literally no shop I would recommend more.

It was such a pleasure to work with Eliot from the Music Emporium. I was looking at a few different guitars and he took the time to talk about the music I like to play, the music I like to listen to, my playing style, my abilities, etc. Then he talked about how each of the guitars I was looking at would work for me. In the end, I bought a beautifully B&G Step sister that plays as good as it looks. It was a great experience and I would definitely work with this shop again.

I reached out to the Music Emporium about a question regarding a particular banjo they had one of in stock. Andy quickly responded by email and kept the communication going for 24 hours which led me to place a deposit in it.The banjo is amazing! Its the Rickard Maple Ridge 12 and its unlike any banjo or guitar Ive seen, it sounds incredible and feels even better to play.Ive been a drummer and percussionist for 30 years. Ive shopped in small independent music shops to the bigger stores to online when needed. In all my years I have never experienced the service Ian delivered in person. He was incredible from education to support to just being a really nice person. Its no wonder this place is recognized worldwide if they have people and service like that. I look forward to visiting the Music Emporium again for years to come. This was a super positive experience from the start. Im in love with the banjo and look forward to learning, practicing and playing more.

I called from California to buy a Collings I-30 LC. The person who helped me was fantastic. I was concerned about shipping because FedEx and UPS are so bad in my area and I didn’t want the guitar sitting in a hot truck for days. They made me a fair deal to include overnight delivery. Guitar came well-packed and in perfect condition. I WILL be doing business with them again soon! Thank you Music Emporium!

Why would you go any where else, I have purchased 2 Martin guitars at the Music Emporium, I am a beginner, walking into any music shop as a older beginner is very intimating. Joe the owner made me feel comfortable, explained in detail the differences in guitars, never tried to sell me something I could not play or that I did not need. I have had my strings changed there, I had issue with a truss rod, they fixed right away, spot on. It is a local shop, local ownership with great customer service, I would never go to any place else.

The guitars here are some of the finest you can find in the greater Boston area. The store is wonderfully low-key and without any pressure from the staff. Eliot is the sales rep who I always speak with: He is professional, friendly, willing to share his expertise on any of the guitars available, and has always given me excellent personal attention. As someone who knows much more about vintage guitars than assumed as someone who doesnt fit the demographic of aficionados (i.e. older, male, white, wealthy), I would be careful about selling to them. I know they need to be making a living, but they will not hesitate to take advantage way beyond whats reasonable. Were talking offering less than half the price I was easily able to sell for. They will offer lots of expert talk to back up their pricing. Dont fall for it and do some basic shopping around. At least check whats being offered online (and you can easily check actual sold prices so dont fall for the list price is different from what they go for). A neck set doesnt mean over a $1200 should be knocked off (many buyers actually prefer to get it set themselves with their luthier of choice and I suspect they would have advertised it as such while pocketing the knock down in price, especially since it was only truly needed if you wanted ultra low action). So on and so forth.

DO NOT BUY a USED / PRE OWNED acoustic guitar from the Music Emporium. >. There is no qualified Luthier onsite. >. Your used guitar will not be set up. > defects in the guitar may not be revealed >. Defects in the used acoustic if revealed, are downplayed > a non standard fix of a problem with the guitar at a future time will be offered by the non qualified owner Joe to fix the problem if it gets worse. >. The guitar will not be set up correct. >. Expect to pay more money for your used guitar at Music emporium when you bring the guitar to a real luthier >. I expect all repairs to be done and honestly described and revealed when buying used, especially at a place like the music emporium touting being boutique / high end. NOPE. Not at this place. Buy new there. Don’t buy used It won’t be set up and you will have to pay for an expensive set up , neck reset, new bridge, new saddle, raise nut etc. When I put in a complaint to Joe. Joe the owner had no offer for myself to return the two used guitars I bought with (issues not fixed or revealed) Joe was rude and didn’t care if I was a satisfied customer or not. He unloaded two overpriced guitars (I traded two Pristine recently set up High end guitars to Joe). making a sweet profit because he sold the guitars without making necessary repairs first. (Plus Joe got to make a profit on the guitars I traded in good faith that had recent set up). BUYER BEWARE with Joe. Don’t assume the used guitar at this place will be up to optimum playing ability. It won’t be. And you will have to shell out big bucks to have your private luthier fix what Joe should have before putting his used guitars up for sale.

I got one of the nicest looking and finest Kamaka HF-2D (Deluxe Concert) ukuleles from Music Emporium. Whether good fortune or a favored Mainland dealer, I do not know, but I found a truly top one. I also give them credit for doing a great job on set-up (setting action at 2.75 mm at the 12th fret) accurately as part of the purchase, without (often added) additional charge. It was also delivered to me REALLY well packed and timely (as I recall, 2 or 3 days after purchase). My reason for 4 stars versus 5 has to do with the installation of a LR Baggs 5.0 pickup. Mechanically, the installation was done fine. But, in doing the installation, they placed the battery housing (attached with a REALLY GUMMY adhesive pad) ON TOP of the “date of build” stamp (stamped on the block at the base of the neck inside the soundhole) that is an iconic and important part of every Kamaka built over the last 115 years. When I called to point this out, the folks at Music Exchange were of their own opinion that laying gummy adhesive over the date stamp (which essentially guarantees some damage to the date stamp) was “no big deal” (rather callous), and in follow-up (where I asked for a replacement pad, as I wanted to remove the negligently-placed one), they at first did not respond to any of my e-mails, and only after a later follow-up phone call, did they send the replacement adhesive pad.I was able to remove the (very) gummy adhesive that was pasted over the date stamp, and it turned out better than I feared — but it was clear that it was a bit dulled (comparing to three other Kamaka ukuleles I have).I offer this as a good review — I totally love the HF-2D I now have, and Music Exchange was great on the purchase. But I offer the detail on their choice, at least for me, to downplay their damaging mistake made in the way the pickup was installed. I was able to minimize the damage, but it did happen. My message to them was “Don’t do this again.” I got no response.I hope that, despite no response, it was taken to heart and will be now noted as a “don’t do that.”Again, I absolutely LOVE the Kamaka HF-2D I got from The Music Exchange. I just wish it had owned up to its mistakes.

Take this review with a grain of salt - the place is probably great for buying a super expensive guitar. However if youre just an average joe looking to get some repairs you can save yourself the trip. I brought in a couple guitars - one with a lifted bridge and the other missing one of those plastic inserts from the bridge and needing new pins. Its got a crack in the soundboard but still sounds nice and I wasnt looking to fix the crack - just get the little plastic piece installed and string her up with new pins. Music Emporium wasnt interested in doing that let alone the bridge repair. Didnt even talk $$. If youre strapped for time and looking to have your guitar worked on look elsewhere.

The focus here is on high end and vintage acoustic guitars, as well as a great selection of mandolins and banjos. They have some electrics, but they are really either trades or Collings. Nice little collection of jazz guitars too.The staff is great and knowledgeable. They are willing to let you sit and play at leisure, and will pull down that vintage Martin for you if you just want to try it. I have purchased several guitars here, and have been with several friends making purchases. Prices are very fare. Every now and then there is a good discount on a used item.
