We came to celebrate a family member. The service was impeccable. It was homecoming weekend so there were plenty of people to watch. But most importantly the food. I cannot remember the name of my husbands drink but it consists of artichokes, mushrooms, chicken and pasta. DELICIOUS. I had the Grouper and its the next day and Im still thinking about that perfection. Tomato jam? Yes please! The only negative is that we werent satiated when we left.

Quite possibly one of the most disappointing restaurants Ive had the displeasure of visiting in the last few years. I never have had such high expectations for an establishment and have them nearly all dashed. The disappointment started as soon as I walked into the door. The restaurant was moderately busy, but it was nowhere near what I would describe as packed, yet it took about 6-7 minutes to even see the server to be seated. A line formed of people waiting to be given a table. Personally, the decor did not work for me either and all appeared to be cheap fake plastic, if that matters to you.I ordered a Red Headed Mule, a plate of mussels, and shrimp piattaThe Mule was the best part of my meal. It was mixed well, had a good ice content, and was not overly complicated. Even me, with my basic palate could taste all of the liquors in it. I would order this again, but sadly, I doubt I will ever return to this restaurant. The biggest compliment I can give this was that it tasted very refreshing. The Mussels were nothing to write home about. Id say theyre even a little worse than average, as there were a good amount that hadnt purged their sand. I could still feel sand in them. The seasonings and butter were okay, but it was presented nice. The bread was also just average, but it felt like the butter went with it a lot more than the Mussels. It just did not feel like the butter was made with mussel flavor in mind.My main dish was the Shrimp Piatta. This was easily the worst main course meal I can remember ordering at a restaurant. The shrimp were tough and overcooked. Considering their poor quality, I was surprised they still had their shells on. I would have assumed that a restaurant this poor would have removed them from my shrimp. There were a few tomatoes scattered about, and were one of the only two enjoyable things about the plate. The butter/sauce was the same as the mussels, but again it did not feel like it belonged with the flavor of anything on the dish. The asparagus was overly charred to the point where the outside layers were charred so badly that I had to manually peel some of the layers off simply to eat it. The only other enjoyable part were the 2-4 nuggets of crab I found. The service was bad as well, and I had to ask the host for water instead of my waiter. They were very unprofessional and rude. I nearly left because I waited almost 10 minutes without anyone approaching my table.Do not go here unless if its to sit at the bar and socialize with friends. The food is terrible and there is no reason not to go to the steakhouse 200 feet away instead. This place is a social club, not a restaurant. Even the hotel bar across the street from Grotto has a better menu. Do not go here.

Made a reservation online and was able to get sat when we got there (even though we were a little late) which was amazing since there was a 45-1 hour long wait for other who hadn’t! The food was killer. I had the chicken pizza and it had a honey drizzle which was so good! Husband had the hay & straw pasta which was just as good, and the cheesecake too!❤️ they definitely were a little understaffed but our server did great checking on us under the circumstances!

I waited 35 for my food, but when it actually came out I was blown away at the quality. Probably the best place to eat downtown.I was at a convention near the Marriott Marquis and we decided to check this place out at lunch. Im unsure if it was the waitresss first day on the job, or if there were issues of communication in the kitchen but it took 35-40 minutes for us to get our food at the table. When the food finally arrived, we were all blown away. My coworkers order the salmon salad and another variation of the burgers on the lunch menu and Ive got to say, the wait was almost worth it.The burger I had was juicy and cooked to a perfect medium as I requested. The flavors from the seasoning and spices and the freshness of the lettuce and bread really made the sandwich stand out compared to other restaurants Ive been to recently.Im not usually a stickler on wait times for restaurants because I care about quality of food more. If I come here again or see more reviews where the service is bad, I will more than likely take it down a star.Go for the taste and experience if youre in the area but be wary if you are crunched for time.

Good place to eat if you’re in the area. We had the pepperoni pizza and straw and hay pasta - both were great. Cheesecake for dessert and it was very tasty. The service was mostly pretty friendly and quick. The one thing that felt off was how loud the music was outside. I basically had to scream across our two person table to be heard. Overall though the food was good and it was an easy place to eat on a Friday while downtown. Would I make a special trip just to eat there? Probably not, but definitely a good option before a baseball or basketball game or if you’re at a convention.

This restaurant pulled out all the stops for the special needs organization I volunteer with for our lunch event. Amazing food (pastas with two types of sauces, two type of salads, several types of pizzas...) and drinks. Their staff was patient and so wonderful to all the guests. Their event room is lovely and opens to a nice patio if youre looking for a restaurant with a separate room for a large party. A definite must for a special dinner!

I’m not a bar person (I don’t drink alcohol...) but there was no choice to sit at the bar.It wasn’t busy at the time but it took long time for the bartender to take my order.I ordered Salmon Entree. I asked my salmon to be moist. Not over cooked.I got my salmon just right. For the dessert for my birthday, I didn’t even choose... they brought a huge strawberry short cake for me!! (I asked them if they have any birthday special first)They didn’t even charge me the cake.Thank you for the complimentary cake!

Had an awesome dinner at the Grotto. Friends had ordered a pizza, the veal chop, and a pasta (I think it was called the hay and straw or something like that). I had ordered the vongole. I will say that I loved everything that everyone else ordered. My dish was good but not something I think I would order again. It was mostly pasta and about 6 clams so I felt like it didnt have enough meat. I ended up eating pieces of the veal chop with my pasta and that made it perfect. The inside of the Grotto was beautiful, very rustic farmhouse, which I think is very in right now. All in all, I think its a great place for a variety of situations - travelers looking for a nice meal, groups looking for a quick drink, couples wanting a romantic dinner. It can be anything you want.

This happened a few months ago but wanted to make sure the issue is highlighted.5 of us walked into the restaurant on a weekday with many empty tables. The host said they are fully booked and cannot accommodate us. We stepped out and tried to check if it was indeed the case (we were really hungry). Their reservation tool showed open availability. We made a reservation and walked back in. And then the same host magically found a table. She tried to cover up saying a reservation may have been cancelled at the last minute. We were there for almost 1.5 hours till their closing time. And none of the empty tables got occupied.Service is terribly slow. Food is good though. But the host clearly didnt want us there.

On August 4, I met with my family from out of town at your restaurant. Very kindly, I asked the host if he had a table for 7 people. He had a horrible attitude and he probably didnt like my accent. He arrogantly told us that there were no tables available and that if we wanted we would have to wait an hour or more outside. After waiting almost 45 minutes, a slightly friendlier waiter took us inside and then a half an hour later he took our order. I understand that restaurants lack employees, but I do not understand how they can put a host who serves so poorly and who carries such an unwelcoming attitude. He acted rude and arrogant. I felt embarrassed to present my family to a restaurant that does not have the qualities that a Houstonian restaurant should have.

We were waiting to go to an Open Mic Night nearby and had time to kill. We stopped here for dinner and aside from the place being PACKED for a Tuesday night, it was a great experience. We sat near the kitchen and they have a window for an open concept style kitchen. That was Neat (insert Bender taking a photo here). My boyfriend and I each had a pasta entree, we forgot the names but he had penne pasta with Vodka sauce and I had a breaded chicken and artichoke dish with a yummy cream sauce, served over a small portion of spaghetti. Paired with a glass of Moscato for him and Sangria for me.We also shared the tuna bruschetta - which was actually a large, thick piece of toasted garlic bread topped with fresh tuna and arugula; cut into four french toast stick sized slices. I didnt mind that, but I wasnt expecting it to be listed as bruschetta if it was going to be served that way. (They did have an appetizer portion or an entree portion, we chose the appetizer since we wanted pasta too). All in all it was a great experience 🙂 out of 10? We would give it a 7.5 with a good likelihood of having dinner there again. (Maybe on a slower night, if thats even possible lol)

These reviews have got to be made up. We went in there it was empty and the server asked us if we had a reservation… um for what literally NO ONE is in here. She then had the audacity to sit us at a dirty table and get mad when we asked to sit somewhere else. Then she showed us to another dirty table and ask “Well where do you want to sit?” I stated somewhere clean? This is crazy, customer service was horrible. We ended up leaving due to that server. Why work there if you are going to treat people like that? If you are going to sit me at a dirty table, I wonder what the kitchen looks like, I’m guessing rat city! No thanks hard pass. The food was not great... it was ok. After seating us and 10-15 minutes gone by, I was about to leave. My wife convinced me to wait another 5 minutes. She stopped a hostess and asked for our server. The server showed up 5 minutes later and asked about drinks after apologizing for the delay. I asked for a draft beer... he showed me a list of beers. A few minutes later, he showed up with a bottled beer. I was fed up and decided to keep it... we got our food: a caesar salad ($11), not worth the cost, tomato soup, that needed salt and plenty of parmesan for taste, and extremely watery shrimp and pasta. I guess the cook did not bother to drain the pasta. This is a place to go in a pinch and if you do not want to go far from your hotel. Definitely not worth the cost ...

Our group never complains, gives everyone the benefit of the doubt, and I honestly never write reviews since we are in the service industry as well. But we has to let the manager know things happened that were odd, and despite telling the manager we didn’t want anything, at all! For the issues that we experienced, he took over for us and he was PHENOMENAL. Service was on point. This place is the PLACE to go with friends and to be taken care of with amazing food. Come! July 11 2021 6pm ish... HORRIBLE... fire your hostess... she is costing you business. We came here ready to spend a lot of money for my birthday/date night with my husband. We had our 4 month old son in a stroller who was asleep. Greeted hastily by the hostess (dark curly hair.) she seemed annoyed we had a child with us. This appeared to clearly be a regular restaurant around 6pm on a Sunday... not a bar... NOT inappropriate for a family to have dinner by any means... we said we would take a table inside, as there was no where to sit outside. She was not friendly and rolled her eyes at how they would “need to accommodate and rearrange a table so it wouldn’t be a fire hazard for the restaurant to have a stroller at the table.”Mind you, we have a regular sized stroller. We said no problem. She told us we could sit and wait by the doors, which we did. As we are waiting up against the wall by the door she stated abrasively “you need to not be a fire hazard.” There was no one else around us and we were not blocking the entrance or any walkways at all...My husband and I looked at eachother like what the heck?? We have never been treated like this in a place before. HORRIBLE hospitality. We couldn’t believe her attitude and we were so uncomfortable with her that we cancelled the table before it was ready. We went to Morton’s steakhouse instead. It was delicious, they treated us like the 5 star we deserved, never made a comment about our stroller, and our son slept through the whole thing. We will never attempt to go to Grotto again. PLEASE FIRE THAT HOSTESS! She is driving your business away.

The service was exemplary, the lunch special was flounder with shrimp, spinach and linguine it was the best seafood I’ve had in a long time. I ordered lemonade thinking it would be freshly squeezed given the nature of the restaurant. We were very disappointed when it was dispensed from the soda machine. That was the only thing that disappointed me. If I would improve anything it would be to add freshly squeezed lemonade or other fruit juices to the non-alcoholic drink choices.

He was horrible with a bad attitude! We walked in, there were 2 people dining inside. There was no host or anyone there to greet or acknowledge us. We walked to the patio area then walked back inside and that’s when we experienced Brian who looked at us as if we were trespassing. He didn’t offer any pleasantries or anything. I then proceeded to ask if they were open because I felt as if we didn’t belong. In my opinion, he should not be employed let alone a manger. He was very rude and unpleasant.Lasha was our server and the only reason why we stayed. He was very pleasant and treated us very well. We ordered the chef’s board and had cocktails. Before sitting down we asked to move to several other available spots, and even outside in the lounge area. We were told those space were for incoming reservations. After an hour of those several seating spaces remaining empty we asked to speak to the manager. He began the conversation defensively, and talked over our attempts to explain possible solutions. He remained agrumentive, and even aggressive as the conversation continued. He noted several times he had other guests to attend to that evening, but not even acknowledging our party as paying customers. We immediately closed out our bill of drinks and appetizers and left. The lack of service towards customers was the most disappointing, and unfortunately, overshadowed any thoughts of the food. No one, from manager to wait staff, offered any hospitality in words or in service. Great customer service will always remain the number 1 assest for businesses with customers. The respect for each paying customer, regardless of skin color, background, gender or physical ability, shall remain one of the highest priorities. This place of business missed the mark tremendously.

I suggest dining somewhere, anywhere else other than Grotto Downtown. We made reservations for a large party at 9pm, even confirmed with the restaurant that it would be possible for us to dine knowing that the restaurant closes at 10pm. A member of our party was yelled at and berated by the manager Brian for simply asking for their drink after waiting more than 20 minutes for only a drink order. He followed them while yelling instead of deescalating the situation as one would expect a manager of a restaurant to do. Its also disheartening to see there is another negative review about the manager Brians terrible attitude and disrespect.I will never support another Landrys establishment thanks to Brian at Grotto Downtown.

We were headed to Vic and Anthony and stumbled on Grotto Downtown. While we knew of their restaurants we did not know about this one and so glad we went in. We were there for happy hour and had a few drinks and their cheese tray. It was sooo good and really recommend it. Great service and great overall experience.

Came here for a work lunch with six colleagues. The restaurant is attached to the George R. Brown Convention center is parking is ample (but in an underground garage). The service was quick, polite and expedient. The ambiance of the restaurant is very nice with a steam punk vibe. They offer a wide selection of pizza dishes, small dish fares, fish entrees and pasta selections. As well as a two course business lunch (salad and an entree for $16).Im a sandwich boi myself so, I ordered the Italian Grinder; caramelized onion, calabrian chili aioli, porchetta, Italian pepper relish, arugula and smoked mozzarella on a ciabatta bun. It was delicious. The porchetta, which is an Italian pork roast, was savory, fatty and salty. Everything Im looking for in a pork roast. My only qualm about the meal was the serving of parmesan fries it came with. There were three parmesan potato wedges. Only three. No biggie though, my cholesterol and weight is thankful right now.
