Neil was absolutely fantastic! He spent his time patiently going through iterations of adjusting my guitar until it was just right. He not only did the work I came to him for, but he also changed my strings and spent time cleaning my guitar as well. Finally, the rate he charged was more than reasonable. Overall a great guy with almost 45 years of experience. I will definitely be coming back if I ever need anything for my guitar. Thank you Neil!

Neil Sargent is the best, hands down. Absolute legend, and for good reason. You dont work on guitars for this long without becoming a master of your craft. He knows everything there is to know about guitars, and can do anything that needs to be done. If you’re able, stick around for a bit while he works and you’ll definitely learn something. Take him up on his suggestions; he gives great advice. He’ll find all the parts you need, and will expertly perform all the necessary repairs and adjustments. He can do anything. You’ll also get to hear some great stories while you’re there.Call him up and let him know what you need, he’ll tell you to come on down to the shop. He works extremely fast, and doesn’t charge enough for the excellent work he does. He’ll never ask for a tip, but we want to encourage everyone to tip him well; in most cases we suggest paying double what he asks, because he’s just that good.

My Martin took a fall and stopped playing through the amp. Took it to Guitar Center yesterday and the technician said he didn’t know what was wrong after opening it up and taking it all apart. So I called PGR today and got my repair today from none other than the owner, Neal Sargent. His 45+ years of experience identified the problem almost immediately and he soldered the broken connection and my guitar is all good. God bless you Neal … Jesus loves you and so do I 🤟🏻

Went in to Neils to get a tailpiece replaced on an Ibanez AFJ81. I brought in an AFJ105 tailpiece to replace it with a better part. This guy went the extra mile with some little things that I saw since I stuck around, did a bit on the fretboard, polished up the metal hardware, and filled the old holes that didnt line up for the new tailpiece before drilling the holes it needed. After finishing, he checked the action, set the bridge as best as possible for a non-adjustable model, and even cleaned out the cable socket. For all this, he asked for hardly any money at all. I can say that for any broke musician, he really does the best work you can get and he honestly asks for far less than he could get away with. Its worth it to stick around and listen to what he has to say. Hes a personable guy and youll learn something. No bull, though, hes honest and hell bring the best out of any guitar you bring in.An important note, he only takes cash. He wont ask for a tip, but you stick around and watch him work and youll see that if you pay double what he asks, youll still be getting a bargain.

I brought my Fender Strat Plus in. He was at the bench working on a guitar. He finished working on that one and started on mine. He meticulously examined and cleaned the guitar first and then adjusted the nut and bridge. We talked while he worked and 40 minutes later after putting on a new set of strings he handed it over and I played it. Oh, my it was so sweet. I cannot recommend him enough.

I rarely write reviews, but this was an exceptional experience. I bought a used guitar that needed some adjustments to lower the action. Whereas I would have had to leave the guitar at a shop if I had taken to a large scale store, the entire process was done before my eyes and he explained what he was doing and why it was being done. He only did what was necessary, replaced the strings, and charged me next to nothing, my guess is probably a third of what a large guitar shop would have charged me. A fantastic, knowledgeable and very honest guitar repairman. Thanks, I will undoubtedly be back.

Its getting harder and harder to find true consistency these days; nothing seems to stay the same. After visiting with Neil this week for only the second time in thirty years I can say he is genuine icon. When I stepped into his workshop it was just as I remembered from the first time even though he moved to his current location years ago. His work, performed on the spot, was meticulous; he really knows his craft. If you are in need of a luthier, look no further.

Review №22

Im surprised I havent left a review already because I have entrusted Neil Sargent with my instruments for over thirty years. If youve never met him and are using this and other positive reviews as a basis for using his business I have a few suggestions. First, clearly state what you want done (write it down if necessary).Second, do not plan to drop off and leave. You might miss a great opportunity to learn something, or if youre nice, actually have your instrument looked at then and there. Third, keep your expectations reasonable. A Chinese-made instrument isnt going to sound like a Martin. Fourth, bring cash (see the second suggestion). His prices are more-than-reasonable and if you have any appreciation for his craft youll tip well.

Drove a couple of hours to let Neil look at a recent on line purchase an old Kay acoustic to try to make it more playable. While he was looking it over, customers were coming in to wait. He continued to give my guitar his attention. He discovered a faulty neck reset, a piece of wood taped inside used to brace the bridge, and a truss rod that was not accessible. He said it would be cost prohibitive to do what needed to be done to make it more playable. He didn’t charge a dime even though he put in at least 40 minutes of bench time to diagnose the problem. Neil is an expert and professional in every way. I wouldn’t hesitate to let work on any stringed instrument.

Got my guitar back from Neil Sargent with 7 new frets, a new nut, and a re-glued under the bridge brace that was coming undone. It sounds and plays great. This is the 3rd time in 25 years Neil has done fret replacement work on my old Martin. Over those years hes also done a couple fret dressings, installed a couple of pick ups, reattached the bridge, replaced my tuning machines and pick guard. I play professionally 2-4 gigs a week and I highly recommend him.

Review №38

Neil Sargent is the best with the most experience for the cheapest that Ive found. He also, compared to other repairmen, techs, and luthiers in Houston, will talk to you way more, reveal way more of his process and shoot pretty straight with you if he doesnt think you can accomplish what you are after. It is true that some people want their $200 guitar to play perfect, (or their $1000 guitar for that matter, doesnt buy what it used to) and if that is the case, Neil is not gonna be the guy to just BS you and take your money for a fret leveling or whatever if it is not gonna get you your desired goal. I even think he under sells himself. He told me that putting a bone nut from scratch wouldnt make my guitar sound any better, all things being equal. I had him do it anyways, and sure enough, maybe it is totally perception but Ive been playing for twenty years, and yes it sounds better, with better intonation. The fret leveling he did to my strat looked perfect even from a distance and made every note sound practically identical to each other, whether I want the action so low it buzzes or high for a full sound, all notes even. I never knew how much a guitar could improve without changing hardware or pickups. And Ive had other guitars fret leveled without as good results (I wont say where). So far, he has taken about a week for anything like a bone nut from scratch or a fret leveling, simply because he had other customers orders to get to first. I wont take my axe anywhere else at this point.

Neil Sargeant is the only person I will let work on my instruments. He has the cheapest prices by far in town and provides the best service, do dont try to haggle with him. I usually pay him more than what he asks for because I feel guilty paying the ridiculously low prices he asks for. He only takes cash, and will be more than happy to give you an estimate if you call him ahead of time. This guy builds instruments from scratch, so he knows what he is doing.

The last guy who tried to fix my Tele(caster)--who I knew relatively well--didnt fix the problem, told me I had to replace some electronics, and charged me $20 mainly just for looking at it.So, in a recent attempt to fix my guitars electrical noise problem again, I went here just based on the other Google review. The place is barely marked from the street--it just has a 909 on the mailbox--but I went in there and waited patiently while he fixed my guitar. He charged me ten bucks and my Tele plays like new again. Neil seems like a legit guy.
