Be wary of this company! They offered to buy our familys property and we rejected their offer. We wanted to sell to a family that would live there and be part of the community, not a company that would clear cut it, burn the remains, and spray pesticides that will drift onto adjacent parcels in the pursuit of profit. We eventually sold to the seemingly perfect buyer who told us everything we wanted to hear. But it turns out he was the brother-in-law of Zip-Os owner, he transferred ownership to Zip-O a few days after closing, and the clear-cutting began a few months after that. The Hallstroms, Thomas Schmitt, and Zip-O found a way to manipulate and deceive us, and made a handsome profit in the process. Customers of Zip-O should know where their wood comes from and find a more reputable supplier.

Zip-O Logs engaged in deception and scamming practices to purchase land from my family after we turned down their offer. We rejected the offer because we did not want to sell to a commercial timber company. After we rejected their offer, the brother-in-law (Thomas Schmitt) of the owner of Zip-O (Karl Hallstrom) approached my family to buy the property. Schmitt did not disclose his relationship with Zip-O. He claimed that he wanted to live on the property and retire there with his wife, fix up the house, and preserve the forest. We agreed to sell the property to him for $75,000 less than Zip-O’s offer in order to preserve the trees. We were deceived. Within a few days after closing, the brother-in-law/straw buyer transferred ownership to Zip-O. Clear cutting began soon after. My family was devastated. We were tricked out of $75,000, and lost the forest we grew up in and loved. We hope that Zip-O Logs will behave more ethically in the future, and encourage everyone to be very careful when dealing with this company and the Hallstrom family.

Just like any company there are good things and some not so good things. They do treat their employees well for the most part and they have been very successful as a company. Even when the timber and lumber industry was slow they were able to keep going fairly strong. The not so good for me was the fact I feel their equipment was not well maintained. There were times when some things went into the shop multiple times for a band-aid fix when a more reliable repair should have been done. There was one particular incident where a chain reaction of several things failing led to some extensive damage to a piece of equipment. It could have been prevented if they were willing to spend more time and money on proper maintenance. Some loads that are hauled from the log yard also seem to be over weight for what the trucks are legally licensed for. Although it is only being driven a few miles it would be a big fine to the driver if they were involved in a accident (at fault or not) and it was discovered that the truck was over weight.
