I made a trip to Batsakes after many recommendations to look into getting a high quality hat slightly resized, but was met by the unfriendly and rude staff. The woman was eating a sandwich when I walked in at 11am and it appeared I was more of a burden than a customer. She took the hat to the gentleman looking out the window, he looked at her and shook his head and she came and gave me the hat back with no explanation. I then asked what the response was and received a simple no with again no explanation. I asked more about what the reasoning was and again...got no explanation. A gentleman walked in to get his shoes shined and she perked up all of a sudden so I let myself out the door. I got the impression that since I did not walk in in my finest business attire to buy a hat or get my shoes shined that I was not a customer for them. I was able to go elsewhere to get the work done. Unfortunately it seems that this couple is ready to retire, dont waste your time stopping in.

Traveling to the the Cincinnati Music Festival and exploring the downtown area we discovered Batsakes. Old world charm, a great selection of hats and good service. Good hats are not cheap and theirs are worth every penny. We look forward to visiting there next year.

Rude owners and lack knowledge about products. The store hasn’t been updated since the original owners sold the business several years ago. Dirty and dusty! Only gave one star bc I had to for the opportunity to review. Sadly, there seem to be no quality hat shops left in Cincinnati that I am aware of to suggest to any readers.I had purchased many hats from the original owners decades ago when they had quality products and great customer service.

Very friendly and helpful service. They have an awesome selection. These are not cheap hats, they are reasonably priced for the excellent quality. I have wanted to go there since I moved to Cincinnati. My husband wears fedoras a lot and I bought him a beautiful hat for his birthday. He has a lot but this one is by far the nicest. I love the old fashioned shoe shine bench and it looks like its still in use which was cool. I also love the storage box it came with. Awesome experience we will definitely be back!

There are Hat Men and then there is Mr. Gus Miller! Batsakes Hat Shop has been operating in the beautiful city of Cincinnati since 1907! Gus has not stop working since he arrived from Greece as a young man in the 1950’s. He is truly a great Gentleman and one of the last Master Hat Makers of the USA! If you travel to Cincinnati please make sure to pay jim a visit and purchase a hat or cap!!!

Love this place. Always have found something that met my expectations and today was no exception. Bought a cap for my son and couldnt resist one for myself.Gus was in a friendly and chatty mood. At 86 years old, hes still fun to talk to. Mentioned that this year marks his 69th year at the shop. Hard to believe.

One little sign in their shop says no returns. Took a hat home to show the wife...wife hates the hat and now I cant return it. 99.99% of retail stores offer returns...not these guys. And they will let you have a certificate but there is nothing else I wanted.

Love the hats and selection. Be warned- a bit pricey. The business process not do much. I received a hat several years ago as a gift while visiting Cincinnati, and was told they will clean it and block it for free. As I dont live here this becomes a challenge. The last two trips in I was not able to get it done because apparently only 1 person is allowed or qualified to do this. (I can always mail it to them though....) I was prepared to purchase another hat but will stick with a more local vendor.

I stopped in the hat shop expecting the worst, (after reading some of the other reviews), to get a last minute gift, Christmas eve. Everyone in the shop was helpful and courteous. They helped me find a great hat and I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. If you need a great quality hat, I would heartily recommend Batsakes... they were great!

I looked around for a good shop to purchase a hat for my birthday. I found all the news articles and videos for this place online and couldnt resist checking it out. Open since 1906, and Gus Miller working since the 1950s.The place definitely has an old school feel, family run. My wife, children, and I all went there today and found the place very charming. The lady at the counter helped me figure out my size, what style I preferred, and taught me about how to care for my new hat. The whole time of course she was laughing along with my wife and family, it was a fun experience. As for the price, you could probably get some hat cheaper online or something, but with this type of shop disappearing from existence, and considering the sheer history this place exudes, it is all WELL WORTH IT! I got a nice Fur Felt Fedora, with my initials, and a feather accent of my choosing for appox. $150. But the fun with the family and meeting an old craftsmen like Gus, Batsakes is Deserving of every penny.

I highly recommend Batsakes to anyone who is even remotely interested in hats. Gus takes the time to show every person who walks through his doors the quality of their purchase. These hats are expensive but they are quality, they are meant to last you for years to come. Every time I walk into batsakes I feel the large sense of welcoming that batsakes brings to its customers and I would highly recommend them.

Over rated, over priced and very misleading! They don’t carry Stetsons though they have signs everywhere. “They custom make” all the cowboy/ western style hats. They stock nothing. Avoid this place if possible and don’t buy into the hype of the historical references - that ship sailed long ago!!!

Bad customer service. Three people working there. All seemed disinterested. An older, light haired lady helped me. She had an accent, possibly eastern European. I dont know anything about hats, other than I dont usually wear them, and they always seem too small for me. She wouldnt help me measure my head to figure out what would fit. Seemed vaguely annoyed at having to help me. I was prepared to spend a lot of money there. But oh well...

Friday the 23 March was the 3rd time in my 50 years of living in Cincinnati and i was never talked to like I was the other day. No I didn’t come in with an attitude nor, did I develop one after the older woman that assisted me responded to me when I simply asked, “if you didn’t have the bigger size on hand how long would it take you to get it” and her response was, I don’t know, and she said it like I was bothering her by making her get up to deal with me. Some of you can defend these shop owners but I was for warned years ago of the type of owners that these people are but, it was a nice day, i’m Up in age and went in there wearing a uniform that would appear that I work and have money to spend but, they are tired owners of a business that is in short demand anymore and have to be struggleing to stay afloat in an area that is only alive during the professional time of day and, they show it. I hate to bash and give up on a local shop with this kind of longevity in my area that i live inn but, I will never go in this shop again and spend one penny ever!I really hate to do this to sweet older people but this is the other side of doing bad business and treating every other person differently than you did the last. I’m done and this only solidifies the reason more not to go downtown Cincinnati to shop.

One of those epic old hat shops thats right out of the past. Many of these reviews complain about the service. The proprietors are not multi-generation US folks, and their service is more formal and stuffy, but not at all rude, unless maybe you misinterpret their demeanor and get a bad attitude.Large variety of styles, colors, makers, etc. Seems to be an unbalanced high number of Kangol caps for some reason. Not my thing but a good selection of them nevertheless. This shop also carries a very large stock of warm and cold weather Tilley hats, but they appeared to be all traditional mens styles. Some Panama-style stuff, and they do service on non-straw hats if you need it. You can even get your shoes shined. If youre looking for something too specific, you may or may not find what youre looking for, but its still worth a visit. Check it out.

These past reviews do have some merit, but mainly just the old fashioned feel part. The owners are quite abrasive, they would really like it if the people that came in were looking to buy a hat and not acting like it was a museum. Ive bought two hats from there, and I always make it a point to wear those hats there so they know Im not wasting their time. But I mainly go get my shoes shined now which is very nice, I also brush up on my Greek because thats where the owners are from and always appreciate the effort. My first experience was odd, I went with my girlfriend and we were followed throughout the store, I was mainly taking in everything and after a quick look around I found the woman to be on our tail. Being German I am more used to this than Americans, but it was still odd after getting used to service with a smile. After she knew I was actually looking for a hat and was wanting to buy she quickly put her guard down. She helped me find exactly what I was looking for on both occasions. If you are going to go here immediately inform the lady of your purpose (first time here and want to see what you have, or I would like to get a hat so Id like to look around/help me find one now) and she will be much easier than what some other people have said. It was refreshing to see those two give people a taste of their own medicine; while getting my shoes shined I have seen plenty of people walk in and give the owners a history lesson to be proven wrong, but then probably go onto websites and give them bad ratings. I have a friend who works at best buy, and they obviously have to make the customer always right so I have heard plenty of stories of angry people telling him a tv is 3D, then buying it and realizing its not, then returning it and yelling at him for selling the wrong tv....wow. This place is the way it should be, why go into a hat store and not have any intention to buy, or even just to annoy the owners (common occurrence even though there is no value to be gained). So maybe not the best place to browse, but definitely worth it if you are willing to buy or even if you have a future intention and just want to get informed. Just dont expect a walmart experience. The hats are pricey, but for good reason, so dont expect to get away with $20. The shoe shine is great as mentioned and the flash back to a more human time is always nice, and free.

Used Batsakes Hat Shop to repair a badly damaged fur felt hat. Everything was satisfactory except for the bow of the ribbon band being placed about an inch and a quarter too far back. When I rang to tell them of the problem, the proprietor became irate and launched into a tirade about how hed been in the business since before I was born, and how the woman who made the repairs had in the business for thirty years and then suggested I shouldve sent the hat elsewhere. When I reminded the owner that I had paid for the service rendered, he said they would fix the ribbon but I would have to pay the postage for them to send the hat back and that theyd never do anything for me again. This is what I got for $70. Im going to see if my credit card issuer will charge that amount back. Ill remove everything theyd done to the hat and Ill send it somewhere else.STEER CLEAR OF BATSAKES HAT SHOP!
