Perfect homemade ice cream spot right on the mall! There was a pretty long line when we arrived but it moved quickly. We ate at the tables in the street and would highly recommend it! Will be back for sure

Went here w my husband and my son. All three of us got the double which really the size of a single and the price of a triple. A little pricy. We parked by the pavilion end and walked down, to say the least after spending $20 on the 3 scoops the ice cream was so super strong some flavors took tour breath and some down right disgusting. We trashed our ice cream before we could get back to the car no one liked it.

The milkshake was out of this world and the food was so yummy! All of it was toddler approved! The management and service team were extremely friendly! We will definitely be back! Thanks for a great experience!

Ice cream is superb, but customer service is lacking. It was fine the first night with young men serving us. The next afternoon, the two ladies serving were curt and unpleasant. Questioning if our kid could eat two scoops and telling a mom of another family with three kids eating ice cream that booths were for patrons eating lunch. The pandemic has been brutal on parents with little kids. Gives us a break! If those were the owners, then theyve gotten a bit too comfortable in how they treat their customers. Theyve got great ice cream, but their treatment of that family in an ice cream parlor of all places was a big turnoff.

I am quite biased as my first job was at Chaps but that doesnt change the experience. Deep diner vibe with fun ice cream choices that stay consistently good. Thick shakes, house made waffle cones, and when the grill is on for food its on. My personal favorite is the egg cream, pistachio ice cream, or coffee shake. But the golden nugget is great. Oh, and the vegan ice cream options, and the BLT or the... The list goes on and on. They have outdoor seating which gives the opportunity to people watch, listen to the sounds of the fountain, and decide on where to go next. It is right next door to Sals where you can get great Italian food from another family owned local business and two doors down from The Paramount. Are there other ice cream places in town, sure. But do they have Granny?

Not sure what all the hype is about. Went tonight and they were out of a lot of flavors. The line is a hastle and the poor guys behind the line were clearly stressed which did not add to the experience.Next time Kilwins again.

Delicious, classic, and very CVille.Sadly, the prices are also very CVille. Expect to spend even $10 a head for your treat, even more than other local and hand crafted options like MooThru or less local Ben and Jerrys.

Delicious burger and yummy handmade ice cream! Friendly service. Inside is a total dive but the weather was amazing so we sat outside. My coffee tasted horrible, I was expecting diner coffee but it tasted burnt. I would eat there again, just not order coffee.

This 5 star review is for the cookie dough. It is amazing. This is homemade ice cream at Chaps. The oreo ice cream was nothing to write home about. They have plenty of other flavors. I wanted to get the birthday cake or the mint chocolate chip but they were out of both of those. I will have to go back and try them out!!! They have several ice cream flavors to try. The ice cream takes a day to set and get ready so that is why she said they didnt have the birthday cake ice cream available. She was friendly. I am not sure if she is the owner or not. She was an older woman. The place inside isnt the nicest. It is pretty old and run down and typical looking for a place that is old. I am not sure how old it is or how long it has been around. It is highly rated on TripAdvisor, etc. so it is definitely a must if you love homemade ice cream. I dont think you will go wrong here. They offer donuts, cookies, some other desserts and breakfast and lunch as well but we have not tried any of those out. Prices are good for homemade ice cream too. I cant wait to go back.

Classic diner atmosphere that immediately makes you feel like youre at a hole in the wall/mom and pop restaurant. The ice cream and waffle cones are home made, which is what I had. This is a great treat to take the kids to after dinner if youre already downtown.

Its always nice to visit a historic relic in a town and chaps ice cream is a lovely throwback to a time gone by. The staff is lovely and wonderful. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for quick dessert from an older time.

Got to be honest I ordered an icecream cake a week before my wifes birthday checked in on it 2 days before and when I showed up 3 hours after it was supposed to be ready. They asked me to wait 20 minutes so they could finish. They gave me the cake to try and make it right which I appreciate.

The building is on its last leg but somehow manages to still be charming- the lady serving Ice cream has a WHOLE lot to do with that. Theres old school ice cream parlor seating and a counter with limited space. Some nostalgic posters and things hanging from various locations. Didnt see a bathroom but we were only in there for a few mins. The ice cream is DELICIOUS. And the donuts... OMG... I inhaled it like a new shop vac- it was so buttery soft. Perfect sweetness, ice cream and the donut. The outdoor seating is cool, especially with the street performers singing and playing. A very cool stop for anyone travelling through or a low-key family outing. Ive starred it on my Google maps cause I plan on coming back. No pics of the ice cream because it disappeared before I could even get my camera out 😁

My husband and I came here while we were visiting Charlottesville after hearing amazing reviews from locals and other tourists alike. There is a reason why this ice cream parlor has such a good reputation...it exceeds expectations!

The cheeseburger was good but sloppy , had to hold it just right so the food wouldnt fall out. The fries had too much seasoning on it. Small drink was fine. The price of $17.97 , why was their a $5 tax on the meal . Any where else and It would have been less than $10 . I will never eat there again.

Visited Chaps for ice cream last weekend and they had a lot of flavors which made choosing difficult but fun. Staff was very friendly and helpful; great atmosphere. 4 stars because our party found the prices a little high and the flavors a little lacking- wanted more oomph from a few flavors. Texture was good with the exception of my coffee ice cream- the ice cream seemed to have actual coffee grounds mixed in which was a little off-putting. All said, pretty good ice cream, a great location, and a very fun place to go with family!

WOW! GREAT Service and GREAT homemade ice cream. Our party of 9 had just had an amazing time at Zocalo (read my review of Danny and staff at Zocalo) and it was super late, we didnt think Chaps was still open, but Danny ran down to Chaps to ask them to stay open for us once we said we wanted ice cream at the end of our meal. To our surprise, they stayed open for us! And I am so happy they did. The homemade ice cream was amazing- best I have had in years. And they had TWO Vegan flavors that delighted a member of our party. We thought we were just lucky that they were still open, but as soon as we walked out to eat our ice cream in the patio seating, they closed their lights and locked their doors. I did not get the names of the two people working, but they were helpful and accommodating, not at all aggravated that this party of 9 was in their shop after they were supposed to be closed. Great service and awesome ice cream. I will definitely be back next time I am in Charlottesville and will tell everyone visiting to check Chaps out!

Cant say much about their breakfast or lunch menu (sorry), but their ice cream is awesome! Lots of flavors and generous portions. Very creamy and delicious, and really satisfying in the heat of VA Summers. Next time were in Chartlottesville, VA, well try more than ice cream. The staff is great too.

The perhaps only place to get a real malted milk shake in the city. Excellent quality products, the only thing that keeps them from being 5 stars in my book is that they are a bit pricey. Friendly staff, old style decor. Definitely not a chain.

The “vegan” ice cream is not entirely vegan. I am allergic to all dairy and had a bite of my husbands vegan ice cream and almost instantaneously had an allergic reaction. Beware, this place could kill someone with a dairy allergy! They should not advertise vegan ice cream if these options can’t be 100% vegan.

The owner of this restaurant is frequently around visiting his customers and genuinely loving the interaction. Its so rare to see an owner taking such an interest in his customers! From the moment you walk through the doors you are treated like family, with absolutely delicious food, wonderful handmade ice cream, epic milkshakes (TRY THE MOCHA MINT SHAKE ITS AWESOME!) And all the staff are very friendly and they genuinely care for their customers. I love love love coming here for breakfast lunch or dinner, they are even worth the stop in just for a cup of coffee in the morning, it will definitely brighten your day!

I have food allergies and I love ice cream this is home made ice cream that is not that good. Today I am sick due to a mix up coconut milk in a ice cream I ordered yesterday. I was going to try their ice cream today but I was told to take my recumbent bike and leave. I was just coming up to the door not the patio like i normally do I wanted to lock my bike go in get ice cream and go to the hospital for my failing kidney. I was told not to come back ever again however my friends tell me the other shop up the street is a big chain store they have better ice cream and stuff. I guess my friends and i will have to meet every time we meet and use the other ice cream shop a block further. Lol I am a google reported and the flavor was off on my ice cream i told them it had coconut in it they said no I was wrong. Well maybe they used a blender with coconut first and then did not clean it to switch to milk. I can not have coconut oil and coconut makes me sick. The pain in my side may be the coconut milk passing threw my body or something else. I got to run to the Doctor. I am in a lot of pain. Sorry I did not get to relax on the patio and enjoy the beautiful patio but I see others come there and sit without buying ice cream. A lady told her mom no the other place has more sherbet in more flavors. Yes I love sherbet. This place looks like a old dinner not much to speak about other then old chairs and snobby workers ever when I order they forget parts of my order. Today is now a new shop to enjoy with my friends. I will have to review theirs so I can stay out of he McDonalds nasty hot fudge without nuts or whipped cream. The whipped cream here was nothing to speak about it was not as stiff as home made whipped cream should be. It was runny not puffy. My ice cream yesterday was also not the best I just tried to support a local mom and pop shop. In this case I will stick with the big company with constant and more variety. Sorry this place is a no go I normally give good reviews but the attitude I deal with I think now has me rethinking the place OK i will still sit in the patio but not with their ice cream again.

Chaps is an awesome place to go and eat. And to visit cause you are at home here. Sit and talk with Tony the owner and staff. Who are all great. My favorites are Tony and Brenda aka Granny. I had been down had a bad day go here it will change. Love the food treat you like family. Just need to keep grill open longer.

Okay, milkshakes were definitely good, but be warned... The prices are insane for moderately sized medium milkshake.

We were very happy with our lunches. The prices seemed reasonable and the atmosphere is little diner or lunch counter. Our BLT and ham & cheese sandwiches were simple and delicious. It was just what we wanted. Service was excellent.

My kids and I go here WHENEVER were in town. The small joint has a nice nostalgic feel reminiscent of The Happy Days. Who can forget about the Fonz? Chaps, decked out with1940/50s era soda shop stools and booth seating adorned with a retro metal base and coat racks on the end, its a place where you just feel at home. Its not pretentious, there are no gimmicks, what you see is what you get; and thats damn good old fashioned ice cream! Their banana ice cream is made with real bananas, none of that fake extract jazz ( and theyre not afraid to admit it!). Their hand-dipped cherry vanilla scoop is true to the old fashion scene; just big chunks of cherry in a vanilla cream base ( not tainted with any sort of coloring!) its what dreams are made of; well, mine at least. And their cookies and cream is ALWAYS a classic. They mix it just the right way so there are still good sized bits of Oreos in the mix. If you have little ones, bring wipes. Things WILL get messy.

We enjoyed a delicious breakfast at Chaps! Omelette, eggs over easy, delicious home fries with onions and mushrooms, lots of coffee and wonderful service. Kim was our server and she was a hoot. Lots of banter back and forth and a really delightful lady. Sorry we didnt get back there on Sunday. We will be back to Chaps the next time we visit Charlottesville. What a beautiful place!

Ice cream here is outstanding. Ice cream on the downtown mall or even in Charlottesville. Recommended by a local and I dont regret it even my son left it the ice cream is homemade and the service is good it is very quaint little shop very old-school with antiques. there are old black-and-white movies playing in the background and it gives you that old-school vibe. they have a kids cone that is very affordable and we go there all the time literally best ice cream in the Charlottesville area hands-down
