I got to know Hugh a couple months ago when I had two high-mileage but great cars I needed to sell. I was buying a new car and the dealerships along Savannah Highway wouldn’t buy them for anything close to their value. A good friend of mine recommended that I go see Hugh at H&J Auto Sales/AA Transmission Repair. My friend has known Hugh for over 30 years and said Hugh would love to buy my cars because they were in great shape, they just had high mileage. Hugh gave me more for them than I could imagine. Hugh gave me a ride home the day I sold the cars to him. He noticed my son’s Mustang GT in the driveway. Hugh said he could outfit the car with better sounding and better looking exhaust. His quote was very, very competitive to what we had seen in exhaust replacement. I loved the new sound (I thought the car sounded like a garbage truck before) and loved the rounded chrome tips they installed. However, my son wanted it louder. Hugh said, no problem, there were options to consider. Hugh made it right and my son loves the throaty sound. We’re going to put on some mods in the future and Hugh’s mechanic James will be doing them. Really happy I got to know Hugh. A real down to earth guy.

Stopped in with a bent muffler and the guys fixed it in 5 mins with no appointment and biggest of all NO CHARGE !! Tried to pay but would not accept. Super nice and certainly will go back in the future !!

Positive: Professionalism, PunctualityCalled on a Tuesday about availability, and did not have anything available that day. I dropped off the car around noon that day to be diagnosed first thing Wednesday. Called me Wednesday around 9:10 AM with the diagnostic results. Had to replace an O2 Sensor on my vehicle. I had them make the repair, the car was ready by 2:20 PM the same day.Overall satisfied with the experience, timeliness, an customer services. Found them to be professional and friendly, which is typically not the case at a local car repair shop. Strongly recommend, will come back again for vehicle repairs.

Had two bad cat converters on my 2005 ford. Ford dealership quoted me $3700. I instead bought two universal cats from oreillys and brought them here to cut out the old ones and weld in the new ones on the spot. Quick and good work. Only complaint is they overcharged me. I was able to bargain a bit but still lol. I was kinda desperate to get them changed and I think they could tell but just happy to have it fixed and not pay $3700 at the dealership.

I will never take my car anywhere else. This is the best place I have found in the 13 years I have lived here.

Im not one to leave reviews, but I had been to 2 different shops everyone had their own opinion to my problem, when I got to the shop I just told them I was having a problem with my transmission, they took the car in and I left, the next day I got a phone call my car was fixed come to find out I only had a bad ground, when I got there to pick my car up they explained what was wrong and how they got the problem fixed and I was back on the road...... thanks guys I will be returning for more then just transmission work........

Now that my warranty is up I can finally say that this shop has been a horrible experience. THEY WILL LIE TO YOU. I have had 3 transmissions in my 18 month warranty period. The original issue wasnt actually in the transmission, it was the rear differential. That is 3 transmission that were never even necessary.1st one installed had a bad synchro in 3rd gear. When I took it back in,Hugh, the owner told me I did not know how to drive manual. Upon driving with his tech, the tech agreed and the transmission was replaced under warranty.2nd transmission started grinding in all gears. After taking it to the shop, Kevin tells me that I need a new clutch and that will be $1200. (Clutch was 1 year old, less than 20k on it). I got two outside opinions and they both agreed it was the transmission and not the clutch. I tell this to the Hugh and after a pressing 20 minute conversation he agrees to warranty out the transmission. The diagnosis was a bad input bearing in the transmission; not the clutch.Outside of that, they have cross-threaded the bolts for my transmission skid, the main dust boot for my shifter was cut up , they left the bolt out of my 4wd shift linkage, and my soft top was left open for the month that it took them to replace the last transmission.Avoid this shop if you can. Take the extra 7 minutes and drive to Pats in Ravanel. Kevin and the owner have perfected the art of conning customers and I hope you are not the next.

I did and he rebuilt my transmission, replaced the exhaust system, put an alternator in, changed the oil and fixed a power steering leak at a price so good I happily wrote him a check. They saved me thousands of dollars. They are the most honest repair shop I have ever seen. Thanks, guys!

Great location close to the highway. It is located a little way from the interstate access. There is also a transmission shop located next door to the vehicle dealership. It is also close to various types of stores and businesses.

AA Transmission Drs just replaced the motor in our 1999 jeep wrangler. Made sure everything was good to go under the hood as well. A couple of the other reviewers complained about taking too long. Come on...transmission and engine work, if done right, takes more than a couple of days...its not an oil chg guys. They were very fair with pricing and did what they said they would do. Kevin the manager was a pleasure to work with and always took time to explain mechanical stuff. Knowledgeable and hard working mechanics as well. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

I called AA Trans Drs because Firestone said I needed a new head gasket, which is a major repair that they dont handle. Hugh at AA was really nice and had my car towed to him and kept me up to date throughout the repair process. It turned out I just needed a new radiator, which was much cheaper than a head gasket. I feel that I was treated fairly and my car is running great. I will definitely call again if I have to have a major repair.

Are you tired of being told the bill would be one price but when you go in to pay it is another?Well if you are, AA Transmission is the place for you. I recently needed my sons air conditioner to work. I had been told I needed to replace the whole system. And at another place( which I am sure you will all know whom I am talking about) they actually wanted to charge me to find out what was wrong with my car so they could charge me again. Really!I my sons car needed was free-on. Not only was the cost minimal but he actual called my ex husband who was to pay for the repair. When my ex did not do what he was supposed to do and pay the bill, the owner told me not to worry about it.I am a single mom and a full time student what a help. If more people in the world had the kindness, morality and work ethic of AA transmission doctors the world would be a much better place.I also own a Mercedes which really needs some safety issues repaired. I have not been able to have them repaired because every other auto repair shop wanted an arm, a leg and my heart.I cant tell you what a relief it is to know I can get this fixed and I will not have to give up an appendage or an organ to do so.I cannot thank AA Transmissions enough, at last I will be able to drive my car and not be afraidThank you so much

Transmission went bad in the old truck, which has an uncommon transmission that few are willing to even look at and we were on holiday. Local Firefighter here. My Sierras transmission went out on Wednesday evening. First thing Thursday I started calling around to different shops. After the third transmission shop, I finally made the right call! If I wouldve known how great they were going to treat me, i wouldnt have wasted my time with the other guys. In a matter of 2 days, my transmission was completely rebuilt AND upgraded!!! Not only that, but they fixed a few other things that I knew about for a while. If you need any transmission work and want a company that will treat you like family, look no further! What can I say about AA Transmissions!! Well I owe a big thanks to Hugh for sure. Having some work done on my Mustang and went to have a shift kit installed and was told by another transmission place it needed to be rebuilt and would run me $2000. I sent the pictures they sent me to Hugh and he got right back to me and said no way it should cost that much to have it rebuilt and came back with a much better price that fit my budget for sure. In the last few years I have had work done on two vehicles by Hugh and his crew. They take time to explain everything and helped me fully understand what they were doing. He saved me substantial money by personally calling a friend at the Nissan dealership to see if something was covered under warranty. A very positive experience and I will certainly go back.

Unbelievable Service. From the first time i called, John was very helpful and kind. I brought my Trailblazer in to have my transmission repaired and it was ready Tuesday at 5:30pm, that is called fast service. It hasnt run this good in years. Thanks again Transmission doctor crew.

I was recently there with a transmission problem, my truck was vibrating in the first gear. They called and told me it was the front differential and a sway bar link totaling $2000 and it would be ready in a couple days. They called the next day telling me it was ready, needless to say I was ecstatic. I paid in full without hesitation, upon leaving and driving off the truck was still doing the same thing I was highly upset! When I called back I was told the truck needs to have the transmission rebuilt for $3500 after spending the initial $2000. This was one of the worst experiences I ever had, they took advantage of my urgency to get my truck fix! I would not recommend there services.

They use scare tactics. His wife the owner wasnt there the day I went. Instead of telling that the particular code my car pulled could be multiple things. He told me that I would be lucky to get anywhere and needed a new transmission. Bad thing is he told me that he had told this to several out of towners and they did get a new transmission. Thank God I have very trustworthy mechanics I could call and told me I should make it home and may never have another problem.

I had a question about the transmission in my dodge truck and they were very friendly and helpful the manager even came out and went for a test drive with me and explained exactly what was going on. i had been to another local shop earlier in the day and they didnt even want to bother with me. I was very impressed with the customer service and pricing from this business. I am from the upstate and was having problems with my car. Someone told me about this business because it was close to where I was staying. The service was impeccable. I would refer them to anyone. The employees were so friendly and helpful. STAY AWAY! STAY FAR AWAY! I brought my Escalade in with a rear main seal issue. It was leaking oil. They fixed it for about $1000. Upon leaving, a few miles down the road my water pump pretty much explodes... which made me go back to them and drop another $500 or so. Right after the 3 month warranty had past on the work they did a loud rattling sound from where they worked on it started to occur. Following that, as Im pulling out of my driveway a bolt got sheared off somehow and flew around in my engine compartment until it fell out. When I looked under my car, the crossmember frame bolts (where they did work) were loose and coming out. I wrote this initial bad review. Hugh, the owner, read it and told me to come back so he could fix whatever their negligence messed up free of charge. I gave him my car back and a few hours later he calls and says that the rear main seal repair had nothing to do with the torque converter bolts being loose... look it up... so he only charged me $800 instead of the free of charge claim. Upon leaving after they fixed my car again, my starter was making a grinding sound when I started it. So I bring it back so he could fix it, free of charge and he wants to only charge me for the starter. At that point I said NO. This is YOUR fault. IM NOT PAYING. When I came back to pick it up with a new starter in it, my third brake light on the top of my back hatch was broken off and sitting on top of my car. I see this, go inside and ask why my brake light is sitting on top of my ride. The manager inside picks up the phone, smiles at me, and says well be right with you. I said forget it and left. This was by far the worst experience at an auto repair shop Ive ever had.

I had my 05 Suburbans transmission break down on MLK day and AA Transmission Doctors were able to come out within 30 minutes from West Ashley to Mount Pleasant to tow it for free. The staff was friendly and very knowledgeable. They gave me a very fair quote and it was exactly what I ended up paying!! I wouldnt trust my car with anyone else!

I recently discovered it was time for my 2010 Dodge Charger to get a tranny fluid change. I saw the ad and contacted the location in Summerville. They tried to tell me it couldnt be that price and it was a bait and switch deal. I went anyway and spoke with Jennifer and her daughter. They were both very nice and said they had heard that from this gentleman before. His price was $80 more than theirs and he couldnt fit me in. They fit me in right away, had me in and out within 2 hours and this is a special kind of transmission. The techs knew what they were doing ,got my car back to me clean ,and made sure I was happy. I will go back to them when I get my exhaust in March and will tell all my friends!!! Hugh was great also. He came out to give me a update, we talked shop ,and made me feel I was appreciated. I am new in town and had a problem with my Rav4, wasnt sure what is was. I am a single female and dont have a clue about cars. I took it to multiple shops and was told I needed a transmission and was going to cost $2-3,000! Took it into AA transmission and found out it was a mass air flow sensor, cost me less than $150! I havent had a problem since. The owner Jeanne worked with me personally and was very nice and made sure I knew exactly what needed to be done. I will definitely be taking any future business to AA transmission.

THE WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. I am facing another 4000 dollars to pay out to fix everything this place was supposed to. They rebuilt my transmission and i now got to get that done over. Who ever replaced my catalytic converter put it in wrong that it burnt straight through my O2 sensor and now they both need replacing. They gave me the worst customer service i constantly had to call either Hugh or John to find anything out about the status of my vehicle. my car was never ready when they said it would be and every time it never fails i had to LITERALLY turn around for them to fix it. It even got so bad I couldnt put my car in park and i had to call a tow truck. This is very much so uncalled for and I truly dislike this whole situation. Thanks for nothing. So much for getting it right the first time.

I went to Transmission Doctors because i was having issues with the transmission on my 2007 Buick Lucerne. They rebuilt my transmission and afterwards i went back for a recurring issue. Turns out a defective solenoid pack was the culprit. John and Hugh were patient and did they could to make me feel at ease. My transmission now runs beautifully!!! Thanks guys!

AA Transmission Doctors can be trusted and do excellent work. We actually live in Charlotte, but our son is in Charleston attending CofC. About a year ago he was stuck in the middle of the street in downtown Charleston, engine smoking at 6:00pm on a Friday. We called AA and they came immediately and towed his Dodge Ram to their facility. Unfortunately his engine needed to be replaced due to high mileage, but it runs great now and has had no problems since. We also drive a Dodge Durango and have had reoccuring issues with the throttle sensor, two times on the way down to visit our son. AA got us in and fixed up in no time. We are grateful for their honesty and great service. I highly recommend them!

Worst experience ever with an auto shop. It took twice as long as originally estimated. There was no contact that it was taking longer until I called them. My new rim is scratched. My passenger side wheel well liner is missing. They kept it longer because the D light was flashing; the D light is still flashing and the car shifts really hard.

Would rate it zero stars if possible.Went in 8 months ago to have my transmission looked at. Was charged a couple hundred dollars for them to tell me that there was nothing wrong with it and that it must be something else but they didnt know what.After months of driving around and nothing being fixed, I took it to some honest mechanics and they said that it could be the transmission but more than likely an air flow problem, but it was something that a transmission shop should have recognized. After calling AA Trans back and explaining this to them, the owner then states, oh yeah, it must be the catalytic converters. I questoined why this wasnt mentioned when I paid him originally and he had no answer.He convinced me to replace all 3 of my cats, charged me close to $1000 to do so, and it fixed absolutely nothing. After calling him and questioning why he had me replace all 3 if it fixed nothing he said directly to me I DONT GIVE A F**K. If this is how you want to be treated by the OWNER of the shop, then feel free to go ahead and waste your time and money taking your vehicle to AA Transmissions. If not then I would highly suggest looking elsewhere. There are PLENTY of transmission specialists in the Charleston area and I highly doubt any of them would speak to a customer this way.The ONLY positive I took away from this abomination of a repair shop was the recommendation he gave me to DUPON AUTO, right down the road...of course he only gave the recommendation after I paid to fix what he suggested and it didnt do anything. Making mistakes is understable, but to tell your customer that you Dont Give A F**K is simply UNACCEPTABLE.

Let me first start by saying, my experience at this transmission doctor exceeded expectation. I just moved to South Carolina after living in Maine for a while and after the long drive down my dodge 1500 van was burning transmission fluid and running really odd in the first two gears. I called around to a few different places before I called John and he was very polite on the phone. After I brought it to him he quickly realized the transmission was in bad shape. He took a good look at it and informed me the price points and estimated labor time, Fortunately for me Johns shop has plenty of peices on hand and they didnt need to order anything. John told me that with all his other customers he could get the van done in about 3 (because it was so close to Christmas)days of on and off labor, but I desperately needed it done because my girlfriend and I live in the van together, so John worked with my scedule. The next morning he tirelessly worked on the van from open to close to get it running. John rebuilt the whole transmission and I picked it up off his lot that night. Later that week the transmission was doing something funny so I brought it back and he adjusted a switch to make the shift time more properly aligned, free of charge Because he stands by his word his business and does everything he can for his customers. Since then I always go to John for everything. Recently my coolant was leeking profusely so I brought it to them and again since I had been a previous customer they replaced a T junction in the top hose free of charge even though the leek had nothing to do with the previously fixed transmission. If you live in the area GO TO THIS MECHANIC, ask for John Goss, you wont be dissapointed👍

Let me just start by saying, a clutch was put in my jeep... I think... So I, like many others, came to this place due to a friend who said he saved money and got good service from this place. I dropped my jeep off after I was quoted a good price for a clutch to be put in and expected my jeep to be back to me within a few days. No big deal. The manager john called me on monday and I get my hopes up that the Jeep Wrangler that Ive built from the ground up has a brand new Centerforce dual friction clutch kit in it (not cheap). I get there, pay the man, and walk out to my extremely well kept jeep to find that the front seats were COVERED in grease and oil and dirt. I politely ask John to come out to see my jeep and he Says We MAY be responsible for this small portion on the drivers side, but the rest mustve been you man. We dont even go on the passenger seat for any reason! I responded and asked how the same grime had miraculously appeared on both seats after my visit to them and he offers me a whopping sum of 20 dollars cash to cover the cost. Being an old detailer I said whatever and delighted at another chance to take the seats out and clean the tub of the jeep (Im weird). I get in the jeep and start to drive home... What the heck.... It sounds like there is a load of sand in my transmission and is making some weird creaking noises when Im shifting. Now Im pissed, John (politely) said bring it back since he will be there until two. I get there at 115 and what do yah know?? Hes GONE! The shop is shut up tight! I get in touch with the owner, Hugh, who says he would personally tend to my jeep on monday morning early and he will take care of it. Golden, I think. Monday comes around and John calls me again and says Im ready to go, everything is shifting fine other than third gear feels like a bearing might be going bad. It drives fine home and everything is good... So I think. I start to check over the Jeep, as I do (bc Im weird) and I find that the bezell that attaches the shifter boot to the center console has been snapped off, the seats that the owner said he would clean were still filthy but he didnt because he didnt even show up to look at it (I didnt mind this for the above mentioned reason) and it still sounded weird. I fixed most of the above problems and figured, what the heck, everyone has bad days. Not over yet! I was going to keep my mouth shut because I just couldnt bring myself to think that they were really that bad since the reviews were so great! But, alas, I was wrong yet again. I tend to do some driving off-road, my jeep is purpose built with top dollar parts and lots of emotional input (which is why I took this so personally), and during an excursion through some terrain the other day I go to put my rig in 4wd and the lever does even feel connected.. No freakin (not my actual word I assure you) way... I somehow get out of the trail and get to my buddys house where I call to leave a message for Transmission Doctors to give it a look on monday. John picks up the phone and I proceed to politely ask him about how my transfer case linkage wasnt even hooked up and was sitting on top of the exhause being cooked! He proceeded to say You say it was working before we worked on it, huh? If I had a dollar for everytime someone said that to me id be a damn millionaire... Thats it, I think... Im done. this business is a joke. John, you are a joke of a human being. This place will differ responsibility to the point of being childish. They cut corners and dont value another persons property. I wouldnt recommend this place or any of the places this family owns to any of my friends. I bust my ass to make my money as a nurse and I expect others to do the same and treat me like I treat my patients. Go to geralds, or the dealership of the car you have and pay a professional. You dont want this place touching your vehicle. Period.
