Per CBC News article of 16 July 2019, Kirby Offshore Marine, owned by Kirby Corp, has been fined $2.9 million in penalties after pleading guilty to a diesel spill from a tugboat that ran aground and sank in a First Nations fishing territory in Canada, spilling over 29,000 gallons of diesel and heavy oils on the coast of British Columbia. This Oct 2016 incident devastated the lives of those who lived in the area, still not been able to return to their fishing grounds. In an open letter to the Kirby Corp CEO, David Grzebinski, Heitsuk Nation Chief Marilyn Slett called the fines a drop in the bucket for a multi-billion dollar company. We both know this sentence does not represent true justice, wrote Slett. Grzebinski has yet to take full responsibility for this disgusting incident.
