This mosque complex was erected by Süleyman the Magnificent in memory of his eldest son by Roxelana, Şehzade (Prince) Mehmet, who died of smallpox at the age of 21. The building was Sinan’s first major imperial commission and was completed in 1548. The architect used a delightful decorative style in this mosque before abandoning it in favour of the classical austerity of his later work. The mosque is approached through an elegant porticoed inner courtyard, while the other institutions making up the mosque complex, including a medrese, are enclosed within an outer courtyard. The mosque’s interior is unusual and was something of an experiment: symmetrical, it has a half-dome on all four sides. The three tombs to the rear of the mosque, belonging to Şehzade Mehmet himself and grand viziers İbrahim Paşa and Rüstem Paşa, are the finest in the city. Each has beautiful İznik tiles and original stained glass. That of Şehzade Mehmet also boasts the finest painted dome in Istanbul. On Fridays you may notice a crowd of women flocking to another tomb within the complex, that of Helvacı Baba. This has been done traditionally for over 400 years. Helvacı Baba is said to miraculously cure crippled children, solve any fertility problems and find husbands or accommodation for those who beseech him.

The Şehzade Mosque is a 16th-century Ottoman imperial mosque located in the district of Fatih, on the third hill of Istanbul, Turkey. It was commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent as a memorial to his son Şehzade Mehmed who died in 1543. It is sometimes referred to as the Princes Mosque in English. The construction of the Şehzade Complex was ordered by the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent as a memorial to his son Şehzade Mehmed who died in 1543 while returning to Istanbul after a victorious military campaign in Hungary. Mehmed was the eldest son of Suleimans only legal wife Hürrem Sultan - although not his eldest son - and before his untimely death he was primed to accept the sultanate following Suleimans reign.Suleiman is said to have personally mourned the death of Mehmed for forty days at his temporary tomb in Istanbul, the site upon which the imperial architect Mimar Sinan would construct a lavish mausoleum to Mehmed as one part of a larger mosque complex dedicated to the princely heir. The complex was Sinans first important imperial commission and ultimately one of his most ambitious architectural works, even though it was designed early in his long career. The mosque is entered through a marble-paved colonnaded forecourt with an area equal to that of the mosque itself. The courtyard is bordered by a portico with five domed bays on each side, with arches in alternating pink and white marble. At the center is an ablution fountain, which was a later donation from Sultan Murat IV. The twin minarets have two galleries and elaborate geometric sculpture in low bas-relief and occasional terracotta inlays. It is the only non-sultanic mosque designed by Sinan with a pair of minarets with two galleries. The mosque itself has a square plan, covered by a central dome, flanked by four half-domes. The dome is supported by four piers, and has a diameter of 19 metres and a height of 37 metres. It was in this building that Sinan first adopted the technique of placing colonnaded galleries along the entire length of the north and south facades in order to conceal the buttresses. The interior of the Şehzade Mosque has a symmetrical plan, with the area under the central dome expanded by use of four semi-domes, one on each side, in the shape of a four leaf clover. This technique was not entirely successful, as it isolated the four huge piers needed to support the central dome, and was never again repeated by Sinan. The interior of the mosque has a very simple design, without galleries.

Şehzadebaşı Mosque: The construction of Şehzade Mosque, built by Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent for Mimar Sinan for his son Şehzade Mehmed Saruhan, died between 1543-48. The great architect of the most brilliant period of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent and the Ottoman Empire, Mimar Sinan completed the Şehzade Mosque and Complex in 1544-48 in four years. In a later assessment, Koca Sinan will say, “Şehzade is my apprenticeship, Süleymaniye journeyman, and Edirne Selimiye is my masterful work”. The Şehzade Mosque is the first step of these three monuments, which are the main periods in Sinans architectural genius.in this mosque, where he first dealt with the half-dome problem, Mimar Sinan created an ideal central structure with four half-domes and realized the dream of Renaissance architects. The mosque has a square plan and is covered with a large dome in the shape of a hemisphere and four half domes around it. There are hemispheres in four corners and four small domes. All domes sit on four large elephant legs. The large outer courtyard of the Şehzade Mosque has six doors. The two minarets with two balconies on either side of the sentence door wall of the mosque are the most striking parts of the structure. It is covered by a central dome supported by four half domes. In Şehzade Mosque, the fountain courtyard and the mass of the mosque are two equal square. The four pillars carrying the dome did not occupy much space and thus the integrity of the space was tried to be ensured. The dome sizes and heights are the same. The size and height of the portico domes are equal to each other and are almost the same size as the corner domes in the mosque plan. Therefore, the courtyard of the Şehzade Mosque is considered to be one of the most balanced and beautiful courtyards found in the Ottoman Architecture along with the courtyard of the Beyazıd Mosque. On the outside, four weight domes were placed on the four corners of the square section where the large central dome and the sides of the half domes were prevented from opening. The interior of the tomb of Şehzade is full of colorful tiles. In the outer courtyard there is the tomb of İbrahim Pasha and the tomb of Destari Mustafa Pasha.

However, on behalf of the son of the Kanuni Şehzadeler Güzidesi who was shocked by the sudden death of the city, Mimar Sinan was built in Istanbul by Sehzadebasi Camisini between 1543-1548.After the completion of the death and the mosque of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, he is told that he will go to his sons grave and read prayers without interruption for forty days.
