A real sample of Turkish taste. We stopped by this restaurant during our long road trip. It was fabulous. The owner was in charge personally and very much welcoming. I tried dry beans, was perfect! Others tried Turkish gyro and İskender. We Tate’s each others’ and was perfect. The Kunefe at the end was real great closing. Strongly recommended.

Their options are mainly Turkish home-style food. Its a rare thing in the US. The quality of the food is so high. Pides, lanmajun and pastries are a must. Prices are affordable and specifically for the home-style pastries are cheaper than expected. After the recent renovation, the place has become more spacious for gatherings and long-time stays.

Sofra Cafe, without a doubt, ranks in the top five ethnic restaurants in Bloomington. Summarized briefly, the atmosphere was cozy, warm, and beautifully authentic; the food was delicious and delightfully-homemade; and the service provided was exceptional. I didn’t ask, but I really want to know the owners’ names (an amazing couple with passion for Turkish cuisine!). I sincerely enjoyed their laid-back, friendly approach to running the cafe.I’m intentionally leaving out details, because everyone must check this out in person. Turkish fare is not done better anywhere else. Thank you so much, and I’ll be coming back much more!!!!

My first time here and I can confidently say that I just had the best gyro in a long time. Their standard gyro wrap is packed with flavor, excellently spiced, and huge portion compared to a few of its competitors. The food is incredible and reasonably priced for the fantastic flavors and taste. The sheer amount of options on the menu will keep me coming back and I cant wait to try their lunch buffet which smelled amazing. The service staff is gracious and attentive and restaurant space is cozy, quite, and relaxing. I highly recommend this place and cant wait to come back.

Everything was really great. It was all produced in a quick timely fashion. Our waitress was amazing. The appetizers were to dye first, the meat in our entrees was very tender, and everything was very flavorful. We ate all of everything put in front of us! Sadly to say there was no room for desert.😥 But we will definitely be going back!

Close to downtown and has excellent food. Not much atmosphere but when the food is this good that is ok. We ordered three different dishes and each was awesome. Get there early as there is not a big dining area and it filled quickly this Friday evening. Each time I visit I think they get better. I had an excellent soup (Red Lentil) and an amazing salad today. You need to give this place a try. Seriously.

Delightful family run cafe serving many Turkish dishes, drinks, and desserts. Service was personable and sincere, but my meal took 20 minutes to arrive. I suppose thats the price for handmade meals. The soup was delicious and filling. My entrée (Kebab) was very tasty. Portion sizes were good and prices reasonable. The small dining area was buzzing with small groups, some speaking Turkish, and a mix of strong aromas wafted as the servers walked through with items. It made for a fun dining experience.

Weve got at least 3 Turkish restaurants in town. This is by far our favorite. For one you can actually see the owners work it. You see more of the wife than the husband, who does come around too. She is very friendly, seems genuine and warm. You can often see her working in the kitchen and working to serve patrons. We also love the food there, and primarily get the Turkish breakfast which comes with their unique version of eggs, potatoes, warmed homemade fruit compote, and crepe like bread we just rave about. It also comes with a very nice Turkish tea with plenty of refills. We also often get the spinach borek, sarma, and lentil patties, to round things out. There isnt much negative to say about the place. The prices are decent. However I would mention there are times weve gone by there, often late morning in which they arent open. I suspect this is due to the very limited staff. Its usually just one or both the husband and wife and maybe one other person in support. But the times this has happened is early in the week and morningish so we really cant complain much about it.Well be returning for more pleasant experiences and recommend it to anyone who also enjoys Turkish foods.

I can‘t recommend this fantastic cafe enough!! The staff and shop owner are very friendly, warm people and the food is very authentic Turkish cuisine! (I’m coming from an Egyptian/Turkish heritage and felt so very much at home here!)I highly recommend the bulgur, the braised lamb, and the dish called the “Sultan’s Delight” — so many amazing options on the menu! The cafe is great for both having full meals or for just enjoying some Turkish coffee and baklava. They have a tasty drink called Turkish chai, a tea with the air of Turkish coffee!Thank you, Sofra!

I thought it was a Turkish restaurant/cafe. They dont have much of a variety of coffee so its not really a cafe and their Turkish food is prepared the night before and stored on display so its not much of a restaurant. They have seating like a restaurant and the place was very clean but Im very confused about what they are trying to sell. I was disappointed because I took the time to find parking (paid) to visit this place because the location isnt convenient. The worst part is they are extremely over priced for what they are prepping the night before. The best thing about this place is the girl that took my order, she was very nice and knows customer service.

This small cafe serves a decent variety of tasty and filling Turkish dishes. The food is served quickly and with a smile. The woman behind the counter (the owner, I presume) greeted me enthusiastically when I entered and recommended a heart eggplant stew served with bulghur. The meal was warm and filling, and I enjoyed it all the more because of the welcoming ambience and the lively Turkish music playing in the background. I ordered kunefeh for dessert, which came served with a complimentary cup of tea. The kunefeh was crispy and cheesy, but not too sweet. All in all, an excellent experience.

This place is very ambitious and could be very successful. However the lack of staff and small sized kitchen they should stick to cooking for friends. They are not ready to operate a restaurant. We waited 1 hour for food only to find out they ran out of the gravy for my med. Chicken, then I waited an additional 15 mins to get food that was sub par. I wish them the best and may return if they make some changes. Best of luck. ( I wait to write reviews until the next day so they arent so agressive/mean. I was quite upset yesterday while there.)

Wow sofra is honestly one of the best restaurants in Bloomington I’ve eaten at quite a few place including a lot of the traditional ethnic restaurant and I’ll love the food but since I’m a westerner they’ll sometimes be flavors and dishes that are odd to me and more often than not it’s hard to find something my very picky 5 year old will eat but with this restaurant every single thing I tasted was phenomenal and my son was very happy it’s like they give such care to every single ingredient even simple things like eggs and potatoes taste better than I’ve ever had before and the owner and staff are the sweetest ladies so much hospitality and deliciousness packed into such a tiny place i honestly dont know why there not more busy

This business doesnt treat employees fairly. Like the other employee in this review list said, they short you on wages. They gave me checks that were not the amount they should have been. When asked for the rest i got the run around. Later that year they didnt send a w-2 to any of the employees. After asking I realized that they do this every year. I filed my taxes only to realize they hadnt even taken the taxes out of my check. They took money from me but didnt send it as taxes. If you value businesses that pay a fair wage and treat their employees fairly, i recommend going somewhere else.

Complete disclosure: I worked at this restaurant for three months this past spring. I have not been in town for the past six months and do not know if anything has changed.I highly discourage anyone from supporting this business. I had wanted to finish out the semester working here, however conditions became so horrendous I had to quit. The most egregious of these conditions is the fact that the owners have repeatedly refused to pay me wages which amount to around $250. I have emailed and contacted them many times and they have ignored me and done nothing about it, despite me clearly demonstrating through my pay stubs that I was underpaid (only about $4 an hour including tips, not up to the minimum wage of 7.25). Its almost irrelevant after that, but every two weeks, I would have to ask for days to get my paycheck before the owners would get around to giving it to me.I have seen food past its expiration served to guests. The kitchen was often understaffed and incredibly messy. Many of the pastries have been frozen and then served or left out for days. Much of the food is microwaved. Often the kitchen does not keep on hand all the ingredients needed for the menu.Yes, some of the items on the menu are very good and served fresh, such as the mediterranean chicken, and these circumstances are not always the same, but you never know what kind of day it will be when you go.Do not even get me started about their neighboring business, the Golden Stitch. As a server at Sofra, I was responsible for dealing with customers whose alterations had been neglected for months and who were upset shop was closed at random times with no notice. Go somewhere else for alterations if you wish to have them done in a timely manner.I dont write this review out of spite, but because I have no other recourse. For someone my age and in my situation, $250 is a large amount to not be compensated for. Unfortunately, this kind of thing seems all to common in the restaurant industry. Please do not give business to Sofra and contribute to the system.

This is a special place. Amazing Turkish food with friendly owners.I tried the Sultan beef and it was delicious - the rice was so good! Also had the grape leaves and soup, both were really great. Their baked goods are so unique, I eat in a lot of turkish restaurants and I rarely find the variety of baked goods I saw at Sofras. Typically you have to go to hard to find places in New York to find items like Borek, gozleme, and Pogatcha. I felt everything was homemade and fresh. The restaurant was really clean, modern and bright, a cafe feel but with nice booths that were comfortable for relaxed eating.I would highly recommend this place to any of my closest friends and family.
