Bess and Alex do an incredible job! They made four rings for us, my wedding band as well as my wife’s engagement ring, wedding band, and a third ring which made it a set. They were able to incorporate an heirloom stone from my wife’s great grandmothers engagement ring with two other stones that I picked out. Everything was beautifully done! My wife was even able to go in and help make my band which is something we will cherish forever. Having custom jewelry made is a bit of a process but in the end Bess and Alex were able to make us exactly what we wanted and everything was perfect!

Lilly Porter is fantastic. Im not sure how many employees they have, but youll probably meet Bess and her husband, Alex. They cater to more types of customers and can do much more with jewelry than what I needed. But to put my experience in context, I was the following kind of customer:1. I was planning to propose and wanted to get a diamond engagement ring.2. I knew very little about diamonds or engagement rings.3. I wanted something custom. That is, I wanted a say in the design, and I wanted a jeweler to put it together.4. My girlfriend wasnt expecting it, and I didnt want to give away the surprise by asking her about her tastes or style. For anyone who finds themself in a similar situation, you cant lose by going with Lilly Porter.I met with Bess a few times between September and November. We first picked the diamonds shape. Then she gathered a few diamonds that she thought would be good, and we met to select it. Then we met a few other times to discuss design. She gave several websites and recommendations where I could compare styles. I enlisted my girlfriends closest friend to inconspicuously figure out her ring size and tastes. And then I left it in Bess and Alexs hands to create it. They delivered in about 6 weeks, and I got the ring before a planned trip. There were no problems or delays. The ring is beautiful.Bess will answer all your questions. She gets her diamonds from a single cutter. She selects diamonds for her customers that she prefers or which she thinks are a good price for the quality. She buys her platinum from a supplier, which her husband, Alex, melts and puts in the mold. The mold itself, if complicated enough, is done first in wax by someone she knows. Bess works with you one-on-one to get the design right. She sketches. She pays attention to what youre after. Shes fun to work with. Some, if not all, of Alexs equipment is in the same building. So theyre simultaneously designing your ring and building someone elses jewelry one door down.Like anything, the details just go deeper -- more than I could pursue. The terms include milgrain, cathedrals, galleries, pave, fishtail, scallop, and on and on. And with Bess and Alex, youre also getting their practical guidance. For instance, given a certain width and metal, is it even safe to embed small diamonds where you want; are they going to weaken the integrity of the ring too much; are those diamonds likely to loosen and fall out?I learned later all of this back-and-forth with Bess is called bespoke, or bespoke jewelry. When I was searching for these kinds of places around Atlanta (online, making calls, and walking into places), nothing else in the city seemed like a good fit. I should add that Lilly Porter originally caught my attention because it has my namesake, but I have no relation to them. Their website isnt an obnoxious, flashy site. Theyre not pushy. There are a couple other things that add to your peace of mind. Bess sells you a diamond with a GIA certificate. It has an identification number, and you can view the matching details online. Bess has a couple certificates and degrees. I believe shes certified by GIA to do appraisals, for instance. Once you buy the ring, she signs an appraisal for the insurance on it. So you walk out the door with an appraisal, insurance on the ring under that appraisal, and a GIA certificate for the diamond (the bulk of the cost for the ring). And lastly, if the ring isnt sized quite right (which could happen in a case like mine), you can bring it in after proposing, and theyll fix it for free within an hour.
