The held my bike five days for a tune up, told me it was ready, then said they didnt do the tune up when I picked it up. It sounded like they didnt want to bother doing it because it was still under warranty and they couldnt charge me for it. Why did they hold my bike for five days then and say they would do it?? Not only that but when I called they couldnt find my bike. They also dont follow the hours posted online so you should definitely call and see of they are open before you go in. The is the worst bike shop Ive been to and probably some of the worst service out of any place of business Ive been to. The owner is just rude and I guess he was trying to joke around but it definitely was not funny.. I would highly suggest going to the shop in Old Town, which is close by and so much better both as far as service and fixing your bike. They actually fix your your bike for one!

The folks staffing the stores have been very helpful and it sounds like they offer a great service, but the companys bike sales system is a complete scam.After more than a year of a global pandemic, mid-range hybrid bikes are hard to come by. Theres a Big Wheel Bikes location in my neighborhood, so I naturally checked out their website to try to find a commuter bike. The website inventory looked legit - many bikes were out of stock, but a few hybrids in my size were advertised as available so when I saw one that I had been lusting after, I jumped to reserve it online. I understood that the sale entailed a local pickup, though that required reading the fine print - anyone not paying attention might add the bike to their cart, enter their information, click checkout and think that shipping options would appear on the next page and then be shocked they were expected to show up in the DMV to collect their bike. I myself thought there might be an option to request where to pick up the bike and hoped I could choose the location in my neighborhood. Instead, the moment I clicked the button I got a page telling me my pickup location was at a store a good drive away.Fine. The next day I procured a car with bike-hauling capacity to go to the store where I was told to pick up the bike, but the staff there said they had no idea about my order or where the bike might be. They said this happened frequently and I should contact the owner. I had to send two emails and wait four days to finally learn that the bike that I had paid for (money was promptly deducted from my bank account, despite the lag in any information) did not exist. They offered to sell me a totally different bike instead.I requested an immediate refund. TBD whether and when that will arrive. The in-person staff were very helpful but the online bike sales department is clearly a scam to get your money and then try to push onto you any bike they happen to have in surplus.

Excellent service. Some places in town have a record of blaming the customer. Eric was super helpful and answered all my questions promptly.

My experience at this store was awesome!!! I thought my sifters were beyond repair I was told with confidence that they could be fixed and of course they were. Shifts like new!! My favorite bike guy Eric is at this location. Eric has done almost all of the work on my Scott road bike since I purchased it about 10 years ago.I know my bike is in good hands with him. My whole experience with this bike shop is that I would rather not go anywhere else to have my bike maintained I have full confidence in any of them working on my bike. The are very friendly. I also will be highly confident in purchasing a new bike from them when the time comes. Also they seem to be working very well the pandemic situation we are in. INFORMATION SECURITY WARNING: Have not shopped in this store in over a year since my last purchase. The staff has always been exemplary, kind and helpful. Ive bought probably 4-5 bikes from them over the last decade +. However, if you shop at this location your phone number will be used to text you advertisements without any sort of opt in or opt out program, and no acknowledgement that the information you leave on file will be used for anything other then to contact you when your bike is ready. This is why I am now leaving a 1 star review because personal information should be private unless otherwise indicated not given out to advertising firms.Unfortunately this will cause me to make my next bike purchase at the litany of other shops in the area. I would encourage anyone who dislikes being spammed with advertising to do so aswell.

I have visited this shop on occasion and found them up until now to be a solid shop. I rented a fat bike there one time because I could not find a demo anywhere else. Yesterday, I was discouraged because I had received a used bike I had ordered in the mail and the shifter clamp was too large for the shifter. I called around and since it was Easter not many shops were open. Big Wheel was so I drove all the way there from a half hour away to get this little clamp. The guy I spoke to there was rude. I had to put up with it because he had the little clamp I needed. I asked him how much it was, and he looked a me and thought for a little while, and then said twenty dollars. I was shocked and replied that it was a small little clip and that twenty seemed like a lot. He rudely replied price of convenience my friend. I paid it because I was desperate, which he knew. I did not say anything and left, but I made a note right then that I would never shop at that bike shop again. I have been telling people about this shop because of the fat bike available, but I will not do that anymore. Being fair to this employee, I looked up the part and the price ranged from 6 to 18. So in the end, I guess maybe the price could have been legit, but the most expensive price anywhere. Maybe he was having a bad day. I just didnt like being there. The nice thing about that is that I dont have to be. A reminder to myself that I can go online and practice patience, save money, and not feel insulted.

Been looking for a sub $1000 road bike for about two weeks. Tried to buy online from a couple other places and my order was either cancel cos the bike was out of stock or I had to cancel cos I found out that their is a back order.Then I saw Big wheels had a few sub $1000 road bikes available on their website. My fear was that I was gonna order, pay and then be told that the bike I saw online wasn’t actually in stock. So I called the Alexandria location and they did have what I was looking for.There’s been a scarcity of bicycles but Ben at the store was kind enough to hold the bike till I could get there after work.My only advice is to get a security certificate on your website cos even though I was willing to make payment online, I chose not to. The site doesn’t have a Security Certificate. And while that doesn’t necessary mean it’s insecure, it wasn’t a chance I was willing to take.

I needed a part to set up my bike on my trainer to be able to Zwift, so I called Big Wheel Bikes to see if they had it. They confirmed that they had it, and when I went to get it, they had it ready for me at the counter. Excellent service - I look forward to doing business again with them in the future.

They ordered a bike for me at a decent price. They forgot to call me to pick it up so I went in to check. They we accommodating in helping me load the bike into my car and gave me a discount on some accessories to apologize for forgetting to call.Good service, and a nice shop.

My brother is an avid cyclist so when I expressed an interest in taking up cycling as a past time, he suggested that we go to Big Wheel next time I visited him. We did go and the sale person could not have been nicer or more patient. As I am relatively new to this sport, I asked a lot of questions to make sure that I purchased an appropriate bicycle for my skill and needs. I ultimately purchased a bike that I love and have been enjoying this new hobby. I am very grateful for the assistance of the staff at Big Wheel.

We are big travelers and love to rent bikes wherever we go. I have dealt with plenty of bike stores along the way and I must say that Big Wheel is exceptional. So much so, that I decided to write a review which is something I dont usually do. The guy who helped us with very nice and spent time fitting us with the bikes that were the appropriate size for us and matched our level of expertise. He really took his time and also informed us of good bike trails; we were going to take another one and he steered us away from that and towards a nicer one. We had a very positive experience.

These folks are great -- bought my first hybrid from them a few years ago, and they were super helpful in helping select the right bike. Tune-ups and little fixes here and there have been reasonably-priced, and the customer service is the best.

I love my new Marin San Rafael DS4 that I got at Big Wheel. Been riding it to work and I love the ride. The customer attention and guidance that I got from Big Wheel was invaluable. They guided to me a bike that was perfect from me and the price was good. Before I purchased it I did some comparison shopping and you cant beat it. I highly recommend that you get on your old bike and ride over to Big Wheel for a cool new replacement bike!

Have you ever heard of bike store that can repair your bike in one day? I had not. I was quite surprised to bring my bike into Big Wheel and have them promise me that I would have it back the next day. I expected a call advising me that there would be a delay but it never came. I went in the next day and the bike was good as new. Not only was the turnaround surprisingly quick, but the quality and price were excellent. I will definitely go back there next time my bike needs a tune up!

Id like to give a shout-out to the guys at Big Wheels for their super attentive service. My bike was giving me trouble, and I had nowhere to turn, but they fixed it for me so quickly and inexpensively- a cable had to be replaced. While we were in the store, my wife saw a bike that looked good for her. The manager asked a few questions and actually steered her to another ( less expensive) bike that better suited her. That is why we will always use Big Wheels

I have been getting my bike serviced here for years and they have done a good job. The other day I came in because my gears werent shifting correctly and the clip for my U-lock broke and they helped me immediately by explaining that the cables were pulling at the gears and they found me a new clip for the lock. Solid LOCALLY OWNED bike and repair shop with fair prices...i needed a part the other day...derailleur hanger for a Kona blast and they had it in stock only few bucks over the evil corporate amazon price,that is price of convenience that i would gladly pay for,the d-bag review below of john greeves obviously doesnt consider this thing going around called COVID-19..ANY shop open is a blessing and heck,they can be a little rude im sure they are under alot of stress like everyone else working through this..i cant imagine even writing a bad review during covid AND knowing i walked into a shop that had the part I needed,Dude, twenty bucks sounds reasonable to low for ANY small part and a shift clamp sounds kinda specialty and pricey to me,even if it was $5.00 i woulda given the guy a $15 tip just for having it!!! anyway highly recommend they are a real shop big inventory with cool bike brands like bianchi and a few old school road bikes hanging ..the kind of shop from another era where you cant eat off the floor & no name tags on the employees !

I dropped my bike frame off for service (stuck bottom bracket removal and replacement) and was ready to pick up in about an hour! Brian was very attentive and knowledgeable. When I pick up my bike frame, Brian explained in detail the problems I had with my old bottom bracket and told me what I should expect from one that works well. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience. I will take my bike there to service from now on.

These guys are the best! Ive been in the shop a few times now and they have always been super reasonable on price for service and carry a great selection of bikes/parts. Pedro, the mechanic, is a great guy and helped me with a small piece of work for free the other day. Absolutely my go-to bike shop in Arlington and the DC area!

The store owner gave the hard sell on a step through frame bike for my 11 yo daughter, even though they didnt have the right size and color in stock. I was very clear that she was a new rider and needed a bike asap to keep practicing but that I travel during the week for work and dont really have the ability to deal with custom orders, problems etc. I was ready and able to go to revolution or spokes to find the right bike ready to be ridden then. He promised the right bike would be there the following Wed and gave a us loaner. Bike was not there as promised and they took the loaner back. I then had to go back again another sat and the bike was ordered in the wrong color - 11 yo girls dont love charcoal grey and Im trying to get her to love biking. Bike was to be ordered again in right color and I would be called when ready. Another loaner provided. no call ever came. i called again and found out a fire in the store caused the new bike to be taken off site and stored somewhere. Now over a month later, still no bike. They are trying to track it down. Maybe Monday or Tuesday, when I will conveniently be out of town for work. I had to suggest that at this point - perhaps they should be delivering it to me at my convenience or else refund my money asap so I can start over elsewhere. Store manager seems great. Owner is a jerk and not to be trusted.

Terrible experience - 2 days before i reserved a bike at the Arlington location. I got an adult with a child’s seat in the back. I reserved it for 7 am this morning. I received an email back from Big Wheel Bikes. I’m here now and they are closed. Number listed on the door isn’t asnswered if called. And I’ve got an upset 2 year old. It would have been so easy for a response email saying we don’t rent at that time. The most basic of customer service. We can’t do later today due to prior commitments.

Went to rent a tandem bike - tried two bikes and both were in bad condition. The shop wasn’t too keen on helping and kind of just threw their hands up that it didn’t look like it’d work out. Didn’t try to help much in fixing the issue with the bikes. Wouldn’t go back.

I bought a Kona-Jake from Big Wheel Bikes. I had a very positive experience. In fact the manager let me test ride all the bikes that I was considering purchasing. Even instructed me through the key points of each of the bike brands while test riding. I have been to both the Bethesda and Arlington locations for tune ups and they have helped me immediately with any request. This is a great local small shop where I have felt like part of the bike community. Huge Positive!!

I bought two bikes from them for my middle school boys.Wife picked them up as scheduled two days later- and: brakes did not work at all. This was first time my boys had use rim brakes- and my son jumped on bike and almost ran directly into traffic because the rim brakes did not work.So my wife took the bikes back. They fixed the front brakes- but the not the rear brakes. But they also messed up the gear changers!!!So I took the bikes back. And still the rear brakes- both bikes dont work.Honestly- now I have given up- and will never go this store again.As an update- shortly after I made this post- the owner called me - but nothing came of it. Very much like my first hand experience with this store- a total waste of time.

From the second I walked into this store, I could tell it was a true BICYCLE shop. It wasnt one of those fake corporate haunts like Spokes etc or Performance. The assistance I received from the sales professionals was remarkable. They spilled a plethora of knowledge forth from the tops of their heads. Their selection and stock of brands and bikes was apt and proficient. All in all, this place was a joy and an impecable establishment.

I came in to get an estimate for replacing the chain on my bike. Brian explained that the chain and cassette sustains similar wear and tear, so both should be replaced. This advice is consistent with other shops I had been to, but Brians estimate was better than 3 other shops. He was knowledgeable, polite and professional. The location is great too. It right off the bike path and is next to Starbucks, Italian Store and Giant supermarket.While I was in the shop, not only did Brian immediately installed a new screw to replace one that had fallen out of my Shimano shoes, he also tightened the screws on my other shoe. Excellent customer service; I will definitely come back to service my bike at this shop.

Got my Fuji road bike here! My 100 mile tune up was done really well, the technician (I think his name was Ryan or Brian) explained in detail what adjustments were made. He was great and patient. He focused on the disc breaks which Im beginning to find out are tricky to have perfectly aligned (its the manufacturers issue) . So he specifically made adjustments to help compensate for the manufactures deficiencies and my ride is even smoother now!

Great shop and great people! They let us use their truing stand which is a very kind thing to do as it took us over an hour to true two wheels.Thanks guys!

Great local bike shop,the owner is a D.C. bike legend and sold my grandfather his first road bike back in 1973,a Fuji Sports S-10-S that he still rides!He may not be a fuzzy & warm fellow but he has character.I live in Alexandria and use that location mostly.Support locally!

Brought a flat tire in for repair. It was patched for $5.00. Great! You think. Leaking air the next day. Didn’t bother to return. Went to a pro shop and replaced the tube. Very poor customer service and repair.

A friendly staff that had helped me for years. Owner is always available to take care of any special requests you might have.

I recently visited the Arlington area and was riding on the local bike trail when I had an issue with my crank and pedal. Went in to the shop and they fixed me right up! Great staff there!

I went to go look at a used bike that was listed on the website. I got there and was told the bike was long gone and the website was out of date, but going through a reboot. Well see there. What I loved was they had my second choice of bike. It was in a box and they had to put it together and said it could be ready by tomorrow. Not okay for me as we drove two hours to get there. They moved some things around and had the bike together in an hour. Great service and would definitely go back.

Customer service could not have been better. I brought my bike in because I had a flat tire.They fixed it while I waited and I have ridden several miles on the bike and the tire is going strong. I will return to Big Wheel for any bike repairs.

Walked in for a minor adjustment on a stroller handbrake and received excellent and quick service from Marco. In the past weve gone to Revolution Cycles for bike tuneups, but the service at Big Wheel Bikes will prompt us to make a switch!

My daughter had a problem with the chain on her bike and Marco was super helpful in fixing it and very kind. Fantastic customer service.

I rented a Tri bike from Big Wheel while participating in the Nations Tri event. As an out of country participant it was very important that the bicycle company that I chose to rent from was reliable and reputable, as it would be a disaster to travel to the DC event and not have a quality bike as committed. After a lot of online research and several calls and emails with Mike, I was left with the confidence that this is the shop to rent from. With some nervous anticipation, I decided to go to the shop 1 day early to put myself at ease that the quality and size of bike that I had reserved was available. Both of the bikes that I rented were tuned, set up and ready for pick up as committed. I made a sizing error on one of the bikes and Big Wheel was quick to accommodate a different size bike. Both of the bikes performed as they should, all necessary accessories were included. The service guys were more than willing to help me make the necessary fitting adjustments that were required, even though the shop was quite busy. I returned the bike the next day without any hassle or any extra charges. My overall experience with my rental was excellent and I have no problems recommending this shop for rentals.

I have grown up seeing Big wheel bikes around D.C.and its a darn good thing they are still around,they are a Washington area landmark and institution! My Dad bought me a Fuji S-10,my very first road bike,at the Georgetown store in 1988 and we have always had good,no GREAT service from the owner,he even remembers my Dad by first name every time he stops in after 27 years!!! nuff said.CUSTOMER FOR LIFE.

We reserved a tandem for an overnight trip. Id asked that it have regular pedals and pannier carrier, which it had when we arrived. I noticed that it had only one bottle cage, and they gladly installed a second at my request. They knew nothing about my reservation, and they had to hold my physical credit card until we returned (really?). We started out on the Custis Trail, connecting with the W&OD to Leesburg. I quickly noticed the chain was dry and squeaky, so halfway there I bought chain lube and lubed the chain. By then, I further found that the gears were sluggish to change. I ride 1500 miles/yr. and maintain my own bikes, so I know there was no reason other than neglect that this situation existed. I tried to lube the shifter cable, but this really cannot be done without disconnecting the cable. I brought my own tools, having already used them to adjust the seat height. I was unwilling to take apart the shifter cable. I had to live with both front and rear derailleurs being rather unresponsive. At one point, the front derailleur bound up and twisted on the mount. Good thing I brought tools and knew how to fix it. Ive never rented a bike before, so perhaps this is typical. The bike was clearly out of tune, perhaps from a season of use. This was not what I expected. I would go somewhere else next time.

I met the owner of this store, Mike, on vacation and I learned that he owns some bike stores. He knew so much about bikes that I decided to order a new bike from him. I chose the Kona Esatto D based on his recommendation and I love it. Very pleased with this experience.

I had a great experience in the shop, Ted was very helpful. I went in for minor adjustments and came out very satisfied.

When I went in to ask questions, an older man acted like I didnt matter, it was such poor customer service. When he found out that I wasnt leaving my bike there right at that moment for a tune up he turned away from me and sat down (not facing me) even though I had questions. I dont plan on going back there.

My bikes rear derailleur broke on my way in to work. I was no longer holding the chain back properly, leading it to flop around uselessly. Obliviously not getting me to work. I was able to walk to BWB from the bike trail and they were able to get me back on the road in about 20 minutes, replacing my derailleur and adjusting my brakes. This all cost me ~$90, far less than I expected to pay.

I spent countless hours and numerous flats getting my bike converted to tubeless. I took my bike to two other bike stores, but air continued to leak. In a last ditch effort, I took my bike here, and for less than the other places, the staff fixed my bike and even gave me free valves. Ill come back here for all my bike needs.

I have been taking my commuter bikes to Big Wheel bikes for 15 years and have always had great service. I am writing this review now to show my appreciation after a terrible experience at Cycle Life in Georgetown.

Buyer beware. Charged $95 for changing one bike tube. Triple what I was quoted. Owner confirmed tune up done wrong and parts not replaced that I was charged for. Owner hung up on me when trying to resolve w/o visa disputes.

Looks like others have had bad experiences here, well not me.I have been to this location on only three occasions. I often use a mix of big box stores and smaller shops and chains. I think I have a decent sample size for NoVa.After one shop (not named here, but in Reston) told me my 2 month old bike needed a new front wheel and that it was not worth rebuilding, I rode 18 miles on the sketchy wheel to Big Wheel Bikes in Arlington (at the end of my commute).Service here is not really with a smile, but they are also not pushy when it comes to sales either. In 20 minutes my wheel was rebuilt by an informative and courteous, but smile-less, mechanic. He told me the wheel was now in good shape and has proven it by the hundreds of issue-free miles i have put on the bike.These guys saved me a good bit of money and gave me a significant(!) discount on the wheel build. I am a man of limited means, but I felt so bad getting so much for so little I had to buy some basic lube and degreaser just to keep my conscience at peace.I have had two average and one great experience at this shop. Clearly, others may disagree. They may not make you feel warm and fuzzy here, but the mechanic I saw was great. Thanks for getting me back on the road with considerable savings BWB.And BTW, my bike is not fancy, I dont know all the lingo, and I have never purchased a bike at this location. I cant see any reason for my good treatment other than being a customer.

Update (06/25/13): I now know why there are so many bad reviews... the owner is a Dick. Everyone else in the shop is great though. I tried to exchange an innertube that was the wrong size (my fault) and when they didnt have the one I was looking for, he basically told me tough luck. I had to explain why I didnt want it three times as he repeatedly tried to convince me it would work. When I asked if I could return it, he said, only for store credit. After a little more convincing, he begrudgingly threw a 5 at me (which wasnt the full amount) and turned away. No, sorry were low on stock, or thanks, please come again. Made it seem like what shouldve been a quick exchange was some arduous task. Bottom line, Ill still go here for service, just not when the owner is around.Original review: Great neighborhood bike shop. Much needed niche-filler. Never purchased anything substantial but Ive always been pleased with the service. Muuuuch cheaper than some of the higher-end shops around here. More of a every day/commuter vibe to it. If I had a $5K+ carbon racer, I might take it elsewhere but as far as getting wheels trued, bottom brackets replaced, etc. on my steelie single speed, I wont go anywhere else. Granted, not the fuzziest vibe when you walk in, but everyones always been polite and even hooked me up here and there.

So Ive brought three bikes from there. About 7 years ago, I got a Marin (hybrid). I still use it, have had it serviced a few times and never had a problem.I live in DC, but I love the fact that I can always get parking and I can also drop the bike off, go to the Italian Store or Sbux and wait while the bike is being fixed. Its also right off the trail so its good to be able to pop in and get something looked at.I recently replaced a road bike and had nothing but great service. I sent an email, got back some prices and models, and made the purchase. I even showed them a lower price on the Internet and was given the lower price.Since getting the bike, I have had some adjustments made (stem, tires, spacers) and a tune-up and Marshall (dope mechanic) has been a master. I feel kinda spoiled. I have a local shop I let touch my CX bike, but only Marshall will be touching the roadie.I also got 2 tix to a Nationals game with my purchase...cant beat that.Every bike shop has a personality. They arent Wal-Mart or the Apple Store, there isnt a manual on how to treat folks. Cyclists or ppl who enjoy bikes (these are typically the folks you will find working at a bike shop) all have personalities. Bring yours to the shop, dont just make it about a transaction. It works for me!

Bought a Nishiki bike back in the late 1980s and this bike shop was tops in the area, but now is a mediocre place to even consider visiting.

I went there back in the spring to look at a Bianchi road bike. They didnt have the model I was interested in in my size, closest they had was the Infinito 105 in 53cm, so I decided screw it lets try it out. It was too big, which I figured would be the problem. I still test rode it out of spite, and upon my return I wasnt worth their time. The guy actually tried to argue with me that the 53cm was the right size because I had standover clearance. I explained that while I could stand over the frame, I could barely reach the handlebars because the toptube was too long for me. He actually walked away from me and said When youre ready to buy just call and well order it. Yeah, no. When I was ready to buy I went to Freshbikes and got the right size bike and great service. Stay away from these idiots.
