I went to Schmalz to look for a nice tree to replace my 30 year old maple tree on my terrace in Menasha. It was a great loss when it had to be removed because it was split and posed a hazard. After selecting the tree we planted it and it survived it’s first winter. By May 2021, we could tell it had given up. We sought help from Schmalz staff and this is why I gave them one star. We were treated very badly. Somehow I had misplaced my receipt, but I had everything else. I have been gardening for over 40 years, and have not been treated so badly. We wanted to exchange the tree for a live one, but the current stock looked bad. The foliage was drooping and hanging, and there was die off on many branch tips. We made another trip later in the season and something must have been done for the poor trees, they looked a little happier so we finally got it exchanged and replanted. I can imagine how hard it must be to run a nursery. The staff that helps in the field are all nice, but the staff inside are RUDE and DISRESPECTFUL. I was told they could not research my purchase, but then I watched as she researched my purchase. I had the exact date and time of purchase, and looked in her eyes when she said she could not find it. The bottom line is I am glad I am done with Schmalz. They are happy when they take your money but woe to you if you need their help later.

What an awesome experience! We shopped on Mother’s Day, ordered mulch for our landscaping. Got home and realized we needed more so we called and they added to our existing order. Started to spread out the mulch and realized we were going to be way short. Called and ordered more, they said they may be able to get it out the same day. Within an hour there was a truck in the driveway. When we were looking at plants everyone was so helpful and knowledgeable, and had wonderful suggestions. An absolute amazing experience and we look forward to shopping there more.

Weve been buying goods and services from Schmalz Custom Landscaping (no relation) for nearly 25 years now. Completely satisfied with recent design, buy, and install of four major beds worth of landscaping (approximately $6,000) by the custom landscaping side of their business. Our designer, Dan, V. knew his design and plant selection well, and provided A to Z customer service from beginning to end. Mike and crew did a fine job with install and even helped us dispose of some trimmings while pruning some tree branches to make way for more bed mulching. Both Dan and Mike were flexible allowing us to add on more mulching work than was in the schedule, so everything could be done at the same time, resulting in all the beds looking the same. Schmalz has the design and install expertise, high quality products and customer responsive service youd expect from a full service landscape provider. You get full value for your money spent here. Its worth it. Confidently recommend. (Again, no relation).

I had some dirt delivered to my house and had put in the notes on the order to please drop the dirt in the driveway on the tarp. When the driver came, he was very careful and took his time to drop the dirt exactly where I had asked. The tarp was a little narrow but long and he really did an excellent job putting it exactly where I had asked. So happy with the delivery and the dirt looks really nice too.

Was unsure where to go to purchase top soil. Inside or the outside stand. The young lady at the outside stand was polite and guided me to where I was going. Another gentleman asked what I needed and walked through to the loading area as I drove around.The individual driving the front end loader was thoughtful as I just wanted the soil in the bed of my truck and changed out his bucket. Slowly dropped the load in and waved to let me know I was done.Dirt was a little more chunky than other area businesses. Would have liked to see a little more pulverized but it was cheaper than their competitor in the area.

This company is just wonderful!!! I was struggling beyond comprehension with my landscaping. I called and spoke to Alex who was beyond helpful and gave such insight as to what the steps would be. After meeting with Nick (owner) and discussing costs (very fair) I decided to give him my budget and told him to “go to town”. Basically, I just wanted it done when I returned home. I left my original review above. I wrote the review quickly after obtaining the prices via the telephone. In response to my review, I received a handwritten letter from Mr. Nick Schmalz explaining his fees to me. As a former business owner, I should have handled my resistance to paying those fees a bit differently. There is a cost to doing business and in fairness, after I spoke with Schmalz for the dirt and mulch bids, I called a few other garden centers that charged even more. I am impressed at his pro activeness and customer service.I stand corrected and will be placing an order with Schmalz.________Live in Appleton and inquired about getting dirt and mulch delivered. Wanted to charge us $45 delivery charge for dirt and another $45 for a delivery charge for mulch. No thank you - we will go elsewhere. That seems unreasonable!

Schmalz is a regular destination on the weekends from spring to fall. They have a great selection of annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful.Ive had the pleasure of working with Dan to have some work done to a badly neglected garden. Dan made some PERFECT recommendations for the low light and heavy clay conditions. My new garden is now a wonderful sanctuary for our family and many native wild birds and other critters.The pricing could be considered high but, as they say, you get what you pay for. Ive never had an issue that they didnt resolve quickly and fairly.

Large selection of fruit trees.I purchased half dozen fruit trees this year and stopped by Schmaltz for a particular cultivar.I left with two, the ones I picked werent the healthiest looking; I felt I had to save them.Fortunately I purchased two trees, I managed to bring one somewhat back but the other unfortunately didnt last long. The compost was extremely hot, and had no aeration, pretty much 2 plum grafts on mysterious root stock, crammed into two green plastic turdbags (some noticable amber sap at one of the joints) The roots were pretty burned. After both put out leaves, one quickly shrivled and died. So I transplanted the other and quickly noticed nice new white roots.I should have passed on these two trees. The Mount Royal does still stand along with the others I got from two garden centers and a nursery, With the extra attention I am able to give this one now, I may redeem the purchase. I dont plan on going back. I know I can probably go return this one I have left, I have two years to do so. I will update here if I decide to do so.Other than that, they have a good selection of potted plants
